Historical Society honors early settlers In conjunction with the St. Johns Sesquicentennial the Clinton County Historical Society is hosting an open house July 23 to honor descendants of early settlers of Clinton County,. The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum Complex on Maple Street, located on the west side of the Courthouse Square in St. Johns. From its early beginnings residents throughout Clinton County came to St. Johns to purchase dry goods and groceries and to conduct business, helping St. Johns grow and prosper. Individuals who had relatives living in Clinton County prior to the 1920s, or any would just like to come to celebrate the countys ancestral heritage, are encouraged to attend the open house. The Museum Complex will be open for tours where new exhibits and displays of artifacts, photos, advertising, and clothing will help guests visualize the struggles of the founders, ancestors, and early citizens in creating the city of St. Johns all looking forward to the "Future." Thousands of items have been donated to the Museum to help preserve the countys heritage. Ice cream, cookies and punch will be served, and descendants of St. Johns founders will be in attendance. The Clinton County Genealogists will be available, and storytellers will relate tales of early times. Come "Back to the Future" July 23 at the Museum. Period hat and dress are welcomed but not required. For information, or to volunteer to help, call Diane Carlson (989) 227-9677, or Catherine Rumbaugh (989) 224-7402. |
