Henry Junior Schmid died Monday, August 6, 2007 at the age of 78. He was born May 15, 1929 in St. Johns, the son of Henry and Harriet (Danley) Schmid. Henry married Dorothy Stambersky on June 24, 1950 and she survives him. He retired from the Clinton County Road Commission as a Heavy Equipment Operator in 1988, was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and Oddfellows of Pompeii.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert (Sue) Schmid of Middleton, Michael (Janice) Schmid of St. Johns, two daughters, Patricia (Richard) Ryan of Dewitt, Barbara (Douglas) Greer of Perrinton, eight grandchildren, Robert Schmid Jr., Brian Schmid, Chanda (Mark) Dunn, Andrea Ryan, Jennifer (Eric) Strayer, Steven (Dawn) Schmid, Toni Greer and Scott (Susie) Greer, twelve great grandchildren, sister, Linda (Roger) Summey and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Roland and Larry Schmid.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Friday, August 10, 2007 at Salem United Methodist Church with Pastor Kathy Leydorf officiating, burial at Union Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Salem United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.

Ethel May Carmack

Ethel May Carmack, 81, passed away at her home in Glendale, Arizona, August 5, 2007. Ethel was born July 2, 1926, in Lansing, Michigan to parents Otto and Margaret Andersen. She married Orin Carmack in 1946 and had five children, 12 grand-children, and 19 great-grand-children.

She lived in St. Johns and Mt. Pleasant, Michigan until moving to Arizona to continue her career in Psychiatric Nursing. Ethel was a practicing Registered Nurse and devoted her life to helping others. Holding many positions in her career in psychiatric medicine, she was Assistant Director of Nursing and the Mental Retardation/Psychiatric Program Supervisor for the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center for Developmental Disabilities.

In addition, Ethel was an Instructor, Residential Coordinator and Director of Nursing and Community Health Services Director for the Arizona Training Program. Following her retirement from the Arizona Training Program, she served as Staff Psychiatric Nurse at Phoenix Camelback Hospital; RN for the Local Alcohol Reception Center; and Clinical Instructor at Maricopa Community Hospital. She then became a nursing supervisor at Maricopa Medical Center Psychiatric Mental Health and worked as a relief pool RN at various psychiatric hospitals.

Ethel was a CPR Instructor for the American Heart Association. Retiring and then embarking on yet another career, she became a volunteer and then staff member for the American Red Cross in various positions as Instructor, Disaster Mental Health Co-Chair; Disaster Health Services Chairman, Disaster Health Services Officer; Mental Health Assistant Officer, and Disaster Mental Health Coordinator. She performed these duties at national disasters which often required her to stay within stricken areas for months at a time. Retiring from these duties, she provided in-home health care for the elderly during the past five years of her life.

Ethel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Ferris State College, a Master of Arts in Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Masters in Education from Northern Arizona University.

She is survived by daughter Christine Baker of Glendale, Arizona and sons Richard Carmack of Indianapolis, Indiana and Tom Carmack of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Also surviving are brothers Duane Andersen of Arizona and Ken Andersen of Florida, and a sister Arlene Harmon of Michigan.. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years; her parents; her sisters and her brother: Virginia Kingman, Nancy Ruble; and Melvin Andersen as well as two sons John and Tony Carmack.

Marie E. (Schneider) Goodman

Marie E. (Schneider) Goodman, age 82, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2007. She was born on May 30, 1925 in Dallas Twp., Michigan the daughter of Walter and Anna (Thelen) Rademacher. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1982 and second husband, Elon Goodman in 2003; siblings, Fr. Ray Rademacher and Julia Spitzley; and granddaughter, Ashley.

She is survived by her daughters, Ann (Lee) Rademacher of DeWitt, Susan (David) Wenstrom of Lansing, Karen (Doug) Marshall of Rives Junction, and Kayla (Tim) Hengesbach of Westphalia; sons, Robert (Diane) Schneider of St. Helen, James (MaryAnne) Schneider of Grand Rapids, Thomas (Rita) Schneider of Lowell, Donald (Sharon) Schneider of Portland, Douglas (Debra) Schneider of Portland, Roy (Cena) Schneider of Portland, Phillip (Laura McMillan) Schneider of Portland, Paul Schneider of Portland, Larry (Lisa) Schneider of Portland and Russ (Melanie) Schneider of Portland; 32 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Urban (Theresa) Rademacher, Doris Linabery, Louis (Gladys) Rademacher, William (Elida) Rademacher and Esther (Urban) Thelen; brother-in-law, Ed (Florence) Schneider; and sister-and-law, Dorothy Heckman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Larry King at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2007. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday, with a Scriptural Wake Service being prayed at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Athletic Association in Marie's name.

Herbert A. Keilen

Herbert A. Keilen, age 89, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2007. He was born on December 14, 1917 in Ionia County, Michigan the son of Joseph and Mary (Fedewa) Keilen. Herb was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed playing cards and his wife Jeanette's goodies. Herb is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette on May 6, 2007. He is also preceded in death by his siblings, Walter Keilen, Dorothy Bower, Verena Huggett, Sr. Frances Keilen, Robert Keilen, Fr. Ernest Keilen S.V.D. and Mildred LaRowe; and son-in-law, John Voisinet.

Surviving him are 4 daughters, Ruth Voisinet of Laingsburg, Jane (Vic) Voisinet of Eagle, Patricia (Timothy) Jackson of St. Johns, and Donna (Robert) Besinger of St. Johns; 2 sons, Thomas Keilen and Daniel (Kathy) Keilen both of Portland; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Vincent Keilen of Lansing and Francis (Hilda) Keilen of St. Johns; sister, Anita Fitzpatrick of Ionia; sister-in-law, Evelyn Weiland of Westphalia; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at St. Mary Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Helen Margaret Gavenda age 91 of Ashley, Michigan died on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Burcham Hills Care Center, Okemos, Michigan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday, 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel. A Rosary will be prayed on Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery; Gratiot County, Michigan, Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate.

Helen was born on June 28, 1916 in West Virginia the daughter of John and Mary ( McKoskey) Slavik and resided most of her life in the Ashley area. She married Andrew Gavenda on June 13, 1933 in Bannister, Michigan, Andrew died April 21, 1971. She had worked with her husband on their farm in Gratiot County, and for the Ashley Public Schools, had worked as a care giver at the County Farm in Ithaca and Brown’s Nursing Home, and retired from Carson City Hospital.

Helen was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, and the Altar Society, ZCBJ Lodge #225, East Washington Extension Club, and was a member of the Carson City Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and loved to cooking and baking, sewing, crocheting and embroidering. She was a very kind and caring person who enjoyed and loved caring for of all of her grandchildren and when she was in her 80’s she spent time taking care of Devon and Brianna her great grandchildren.

Survivors include her 3 daughters, Lillian Batterson of Lansing, Michigan, Helen and Larry Kerr of Williamston, Michigan, Janet and Don Cook of Ashley, Michigan, 1 son, Ronald and Shirley Gavenda of Freeland, Michigan, 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 1 brother
John and Helen Slavik of Otisville, Michigan, She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Andrew, 2 sisters Victoria Lucas and Pauline Davidson, 3 brothers, Walter, Frank, Peter Slavik.

Mildred "Millie" Webster

Mildred “Millie” E. Webster age 66 of St. Johns, Michigan died Saturday, August 4, 2007 at her home. Funeral services will be at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns chapel on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. Burial will take place at East Lawn Cemetery, Okemos, Michigan. Pastor Ken Micheff will officiate and visitation will be Monday from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Millie was born in Highland Park, Michigan on June 18, 1941 the daughter of Wylie and Evey (Eldridge) Pittman and attended school in Melvindale, Michigan. She resided most of her life in Gratiot and Clinton County, Michigan. Mille married Ervin Webster on July 1, 1959 in Angola, Indiana, Ervin died May 14, 2002. She was a homemaker caring for children and collected lighthouses, and enjoyed traveling to see lighthouses. She made quilts and liked to cross stitch. She was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church in St. Johns, Michigan.

Survivors include her 6 children, Ervin “Dale” and Lorie Webster II, of St. Johns, Michigan, Cynthia and Walter Hubbert of Elwell, Michigan, John and Christina Webster III of Perrinton, Michigan, Larry and Sue Webster of St. Johns, Michigan, Roberta and Robert Whitford of Maple Rapids, Michigan, Eugene Webster of Tennessee, 14 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, her siblings, Clifton Pittman, Annie and Jerry Hill, Patricia Langlois, Julie Pittman, CW and Lynda Pittman, Jimmie Pittman, Kenneth Pittman. She was predeceased by her parents, Ervin Webster, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

Denise E. Barclay

Denise E. Barclay, 46 of St. Johns, 0ur beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend of hundreds went to be with her Lord, on August 4, 2007 at the age of 46. She was born August 31, 1960 in St Johns, Michigan the daughter of Marvin and Ellomae (Ellie) Evitts. She was a 1978 graduate of St. Johns High School, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fowler and the St. Johns Military Moms. Denise passionately served the faculty, staff and students of Michigan State University for 27 years.

She is survived by her devoted husband Steven, son PV2 Braxton Kuhnle US Army, Fort Eustis Virginia, daughter Brittany Kuhnle who will be a senior at St Johns High School; her mother Ellomae Evitts of St Johns; five sisters, Diane (Jerry) Sharick and Dorothy Cornwell all of St Johns, Dolores (Don) Johnson of Lansing, Deb (Rick) Louchart of Lakeland, FL, Darlene (Doug) Hufnagel of Ovid; two brothers, Don Evitts of St Johns, Dale (Judy) Evitts of Middleton; sisters-in-law, Nicki (Mark) Ferris of Ionia, Ann (Myron) Frazier of Southfield; brothers-in-law, Mike Barclay of Rockford, Terry (Jun) Barclay of Thailand; and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends, especially her bowling buddies and her colleagues from Michigan State University Human Resources. We take comfort knowing that she has been reunited with loved ones who went before her; her father Marvin, spouse Richard (Dick) Adams, brother-in-law Terry Cornwell and nephew Brandon Ferris.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St Johns (989) 224-4422. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday, August 5 from 3 - 9 PM and Monday, August 6 from 12 Noon - 9 P.M. Mary J. Ohlemacher

Mary Jane Ohlemacher, of St. Johns, MI. died Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at the age of 75. She was born August 21, 1931 in Vermontville, Michigan the daughter of Earl and Fannie Irene (Hager) Hadden. Mary was a graduate of Sexton High School, attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns and was a retired M.S.U. Bookstore customer service manager. On August 10, 1957 she married Nelson (Ohle) Ohlemacher and he preceded her in death in 1974. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Bob and Jim Hadden; two sisters, Eloise Link and Janice Joppie; daughter-in-law, Kim Ohlemacher and a great grandson Stephen.

Surviving are her children, Janet Shepard, Lisa (Mark) Rosner, Pam (Pete) Empie and Matt Ohlemacher all of St. Johns, Mark (Lori) Ohlemacher of Haslett, Elizabeth (Garrick) Puffer of Harbor Springs, Amy (Jason) Moorash of Laurel, MD, Ann (Bill) Butcher of Howell; 23 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Norma (John) Atanasoff of Lansing; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jean Hadden of Wayland, MI and Dorothy Ann Charles of Muncie, IN.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am Saturday, August 4, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery 2520 W. Willow, Lansing. A private visitation will be held.
