Donald Herman Thelen Donald Herman Thelen, age 81, passed away on March 5, 2008. He was born on August
25, 1926 in Fowler the son of Robert and Rose (Martin) Thelen. Mr. Thelen was a member of
St. Patrick Catholic Church, K of C Council #2168, American Legion and the V.F.W. Post
#4090 all in Portland. He was formerly on the Portland City Council and was a Ionia County
Commissioner. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Raymond.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann; children,
Patricia Koenigsknecht, Thomas (Karen) Thelen, Denise (Jim) Anderton, Joseph (friend,
Sharon Thelen) Thelen, Mary Frances (Don) Anderson, John (Lisa) Thelen; 10 grandchildren;
5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Martin Thelen, Marcella Rademacher, Clarence Thelen, Joan
(Irwin) Miller, James (Helen) Thelen, Jerome (Arlene) Thelen; sister-in-law, Therese
Thelen; and many nieces and nephews.
The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday,
March 7, 2008 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland with the Rev. William Koenigsknecht
presiding. Rite of Committal will be at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends
6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge
St., Portland. A Scriptural Wake Service will be at 7:00 p.m. For those wishing, memorial
contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Church - Boiler Fund in memory of Mr. Thelen.

75 of Elsie, Michigan died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing,
Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on
Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Joseph F. Eger Jr. and Pastor Wayne Houck will
officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on
Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 6-8 and Friday, March 7, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family
present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.
Daniel was born in Lansing, Michigan on February 3, 1933 the son of Daniel R. and Mary (
Nemith ) Walter. He has lived in Elsie since 1972. Daniel married Lola M. Bellah on May
20, 1957 in Downers Grove, IL. Daniel worked as maintenance at Dana Corp. He loved to hunt
and fish. He was an avid motorcyclist and a country music fan. Daniel was a member of
Duplain Church of Christ as well as the NRA and Chairman of the Grievance Committee at
Atlas.
He is survived by his wife Lola Walter of Elsie, MI, 4 sons; James C. Walter of Elsie, MI,
Joseph S. Walter of Flint, MI, Daniel W. and Penny Walter of Ashley, MI, Shane and Amy
Bearden of Owosso, MI, 4 grandchildren; Zachariah N. Walter, Ambrosia M. and Jason
Holencik, Daniel W. Walter, Amanda D. Walter, great grandchild Alexis Holencik, siblings;
Elaine Sparks, Judy and Robert Johnson, David and Judy Walter, Luella and Clyde Dogget,
Dale Walter, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, and sister
Jeanine Hagerman.

Miguel "Kino"
Martinez died February 29, 2008 at the age of 76. He was born in San Antonio, TX on June
4, 1931 the son of Miguel and Matilde (Marin) Martinez. He was a member of St. Joseph
Catholic Church. He married Cecilia Sereseroz on December 4, 1954 and she survives him.
Miguel was a factory worker at Motor Wheel where he retired after 39 years of service. He
enjoyed camping with his family, gardening, hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children,
Maggie (Ken) Matice, Anita (Terry) Wright, Miguel (Connie) Martinez, Jr., Tina (Allie)
Pohl, Alice (Ron) Schueller, Becky (Jimmy) Soria, Dody Martinez and Kurt, Nina Christie,
Lydia (Bruce) Lamb, Jessie (Laurie) Martinez, Mark (Jill) Martinez, and John Martinez, 31
grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers and one sister. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by his son Tony Martinez, one brother and 2 sisters.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m.
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest
Cemetery, with Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends Monday 6:00
8:00p.m. and Tuesday 2:00 4:00p.m. and 6:00 8:00p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass
St., St. Johns. A vigil service with a rosary will be prayed on Tuesday at 7:00p.m.
Military honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. Sympathies may be expressed in the
form of memorial contributions to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Erma Randolph Waggoner
Robinson, 92 years old, died February 29, 2008. Born Erma Helen Randolph to Orley and
Ethel Pruden Randolph on January 23, 1916 in a log cabin in Eureka, attended Eureka School
and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1934. She was an active member of the Eureka
Christian Church and Womens Fellowship and was the Postmaster in Eureka for 22
years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin G. Waggoner, whom she married June
30, 1937, and who died May 3, 1957. She married J.D. Robinson April 6, 1963 and he
predeceased her July 8, 1993.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Wally) Huggett of Marlette, MI and Barbara
(Fred) Ziegler of Greenville, WV; one step-daughter, Jean (John) Martin; four
grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. She is also
survived by one sister, Kay Holmquist and two sisters-in-law, Fern Waggoner and Ellen
Waggoner. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by brothers, Dale Randolph
and Gordon Randolph.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 3, 2008 at Eureka Christian Church,
burial following at Eureka Cemetery with Pastor Keith Whipple officiating. Visitation will
be held 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Owosso, Michigan.

on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with
burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday , February
29, 2008, from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., A Prayer Service will
be held on Friday at 6:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
Dorothy was born in Muninsing, Michigan on November 18, 1915 the daughter of Theophil and
Anna (Sislock) Ludwa. Dorothy moved to Elsie in 1941, having previously lived in Detroit
and Munising. Dorothy married Max W. Courter in Munising, on November 18, 1933, Max
predecesed her on July 29, 1999. She worked as a cook at the E.E. Kngiht Elementary School
and previously worked at the Barley Store in Elsie. Dorothy enjoyed reading. She was a
member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church and also served on the Altar Society.
She is survived by 3 daughters; Maxine and Richard Pokorney of Elsie, Annette Smith of
South Whithey, IN, Patricia and William Jorae of St. Johns, 2 sons; Joseph and Diane
Courter of Elsie, and Matthew and Sandy Courter of Larwell, IN, 15 grandchildren, 30 great
grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Anne Carlson of Munising, MI, Laura
Takanen of Chadham, MI, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents,
husband, one sister, 2 brothers, two grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Edward Richard (Klatt)
Harr, 54 died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008. Ed was born January 17, 1954 in Lansing, MI the
son of Arthur and Bernadette (Pung) Harr. At a very early age his parents died in a
drowning accident, and he and his sister were adopted by Marvin and Rita Harr. Ed
graduated from St. Johns High School and was employed as a locksmith for the Dept. of
Corrections at the prison in Ionia. He enjoyed feeding the deer in his back yard, fishing,
cooking and the great outdoors. He especially loved his grandchildren and family.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Bernadette B.J.
and (Ryan) Bowen of Elsie; grandsons Broday and Aiden Bowen; sisters, Marlene and John
(deceased) Fabus of Ashley, Diane and Mark Armbrustmacher of Houghton Lake, Sharon
and Freddie Skaggs of Eaton Rapids, KayeAnn and Richard Mitchell of St. Johns; one niece
and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sibling and adoptive
parents, Marvin and Rita Harr.
