Gallagher John Richard Gallagher (the man on the corner), 60, of St. Johns, passed away Jan. 1, 2000. He was born in Mt. Pleasant Nov. 25, 1939, the son of Patrick and Adah (Riddle) Gallagher. He lived the past 15 years in the St. Johns area. He was a retired Oklahoma Road Department employee. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. Surviving are three sisters, Patricia (Dennis) Bassett of Prescott, Ariz., Judy (Bill) Gallagher White of Hominy, Okla., and Bea (Bob) Goodrich of St. Johns; two brothers, Bruce (Marva) Gallagher of Saranac and Bob (Barbara) Gallagher of Gardenville, Nev.; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Ann. The funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Fr. Timothy D. Krzyzaniak officiating. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home.
Paul A. VanEtten, 42, of St. Johns, passed away Dec. 30, 1999. He was born in St. Johns Dec. 20, 1957, the son of Eugene and Marietta (Schueller) VanEtten. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes. He was an employee of Woodard Inc. in Owosso for several years, and was currently employed with B&B Quick Lube in St. Johns. He married Laura Ann Brown and together they had three children. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Jamie) VanEtten of Maple Rapids, and Ronnie VanEtten of St. Johns; one sister, Mindi VanEtten of Arliey, Ala.; one granddaughter, Taylor VanEtten, daughter of Michael and Jamie; ex-wife, Laura Brown of Kalkaska; his mother, Marietta VanEtten of St. Johns; three brothers, Sam (Darlinda) VanEtten of Lansing, Gene (Michelle) of Owosso, David (Julie) VanEtten of St. Johns; two sisters, Gloria (Russ) Brauher of Perrinton, Mary (Bob) Pratt of St. Johns, and half-sister Penny Sturgis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four nieces and four nephews. Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery, with the Rev. Nancy Besemer officiating. Memorials may be made to the Paul VanEtten trust fund.
Jack W. Flower, 65, of Kalamazoo and formerly of the St. Johns area, passed away Dec. 31, 1999. He was born Feb. 6, 1913 in Lansing, the son of Charles and Nell (Moss) Flower. He was a resident of Kalamazoo since 1962. He was a Licensed Funeral Director with Langeland Family Funeral Homes for many years and prior to that was an essential oil buyer at A. M. Todd Company for 29 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church. On June 5, 1932 he was married to the former Marjorie Cool, who survives him. Also surviving are three daughters and their spouses, Barbara (Peter) Braun of Houston Texas, Virginia (Allan) Matter of Burton and Christine (Douglas) Borsum of Casselberry, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Lee Flower of Seven Lakes, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Flower, in 1996; and a sister, Maxine Antes. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Jan. 12, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Robert Noblett officiating. Friends may meet the family at the chapel from 2 to 4 and 6 6 to 8 p.m., Jan. 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund or a charity of one's choice. Glenn E. Brown, 85, formerly of Ovid, passed away Jan. 1, 2000 in Grand Rapids. He was born Aug. 8, 1914 in Clinton County, the son of Harry and Etta (Voyes) Brown. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1932. He was a member of Carland United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and was a currier for Old Kent Bank for many years. He married Laura (Horn) Sage Aug. 30, 1969. She preceded him in death in 1987. Survivors include one sister, Thelma Chandler of St. Johns; one brother, Merle (Irma) Brown of New Jersey; step-sons, Gary (Pamela) Sage of Grand Rapids, and Phillip (Joanne) Sage of East Tawas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Brown. Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Ovid, with burial at Riverside Cemetery, Henderson. Memorials may be made to Carland U. M. Church.
William H. Knight, 86, of Elsie, passed away Dec. 29, 1999. He was a farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Funeral services were Dec. 31 at the Osgood Funeral Home. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery.
Victor Joseph Kazen, 95, of Corunna, passed away Jan. 1, 2000. He owned and operated his own furniture store in Corunna. Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 4 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso. The family was served by the Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel.
Ruth G. (Tedhams) Giles, 87, of St. Louis, passed away Dec. 30, 1999. She owned and operated a sporting goods store in St. Louis for many years. Funeral services were Jan. 3 at the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis. The family was served by the Alward-Carter Funeral Home, St. Louis. Earl R. Klaver, 81, of DeWitt, passed away Jan. 2, 2000. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Calvary Unit. He received the Purple Heart. He was employed with Dalman Hardware, and retired from Michigan Supply Company in 1984 after 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, July 27, 1997. Surviving are one son, Doug Klaver of DeWitt; two grandchildren, Jessica Klaver and Toby Nabbefeld; one brother, Harold (Betty) Klaver, and one sister, Marguerite Dalman, both of DeWitt; special friend Marsha Klaver; special nieces, Shirley and Vicki. Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at Redeemer United Methodist Church, with Dr. Rodney J. Kalajainen, pastor, officiating. Interment was at DeWitt Cemetery with Michael Klaver, Dennis Klaver, Toby Nabbefeld, Bruce Dalman, Gary Dalman, Jim Dalman, Bobby Henning and Donny Henning serving as casket bearers. Military graveside services were provided by the V. F. W. Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to Ingham Visiting Nurse Services, 825 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 48912. The family was served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Howard W. Kortes, 82, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and formerly of Portland, died Dec. 22, 1999. He was born in Lakeview Nov. 3, 1917, the son of John M. and Mary Magdalene (Force) Kortes. He graduated from Western Michigan University, and was a member of the Theta Chi Delta Fraternity. He was a real estate broker in St. Johns and owned and operated indoor and outdoor movie theaters in Michigan. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Hot Springs Valley Men's 18 Hole Golf League and the Seniors Golf Association. He was a member of the Hot Springs Valley Lion's Club, the American Legion Post of St. Johns, past president of the Rotary Club of St. Johns, and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Portland. He also played with a professional baseball team. Surviving are his wife, Irene M. Kortes, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; son, Thomas R. Kortes of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters, Margo A. Kortes of Lansing and Mary Lee Kortes-Ambel of New York, N.Y.; stepson, Steven A. Correll of Woodstock, Ga.; stepdaughter, Kathleen A. Barry of Flint; one granddaughter, five step grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Dawdy of Trufant; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leonora (Lehman) Kortes; his parents, and brother, Russel Kortes. Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Joseph I. Martin, 84, of Westphalia died Dec. 22, 1999. He was born in Westphalia April 4, 1915, the son of Edward and Catherine (Stump) Martin. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Society, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Westphalia Council #2890, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a charter member of the Westphalia Township Firefighters. He was an avid sportsman. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Carolyn M. of Westphalia; daughters, Patricia (Eugene) Geller of Plano, Texas, and Beverly (Ronald) Nurenberg and Anne (Edward) Smith, both of Westphalia; son, James (Carla) Martin of Placerville, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and sister, Marian Schafer of Lansing. He was preceded in death by grandson, David Smith (1992); brothers, Ambrose Martin, Bernard Rademacher, and Arnold Rademacher; and sister, Wilhelma Fox. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 24 by the Rev. William Ashbaugh at St. Mary's Church, Westphalia. The Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. She was born in Westphalia June 23, 1912, the daughter of Alfred and Dora (Wirth) Thelen. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Westphalia. Surviving are her brothers, Leonard (Rita) Thelen and Urban (Esther) Thelen; sisters-in-law Regina Thelen and Jeanette Thelen; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Wacker; sister Viola (Walter) Harr; and brothers, Virgil and James Thelen. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 30 by the Rev. Monsignor Sylvester Fedewa at St. Mary's Church. The Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Fr. Al Miller Educational Trust Fund. Arrangements were made by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Richard Ludwick He was born in Clinton County, Michigan to Leon and Mabel Ludwick. He spent his early years and attended local schools in St. Johns, Michigan. He entered the Army in 1951, serving with the 508th Airborne Infantry, stationed out of Ft. Benning, Georgia. After leaving the military, he worked as meat cutter in Michigan, Florida and California for 43 years before retiring from the meat business in 1987. He then worked several years for Brown's Ace Hardware in Paradise until 1996. Mr. Ludwick enjoyed reading, traveling and the outdoors, but hes greatest pleasure was derived from time he spent with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, JoAnn Ludwick of Downey, CA; sons, Dale of Sacramento, CA, Gary of Downey, Ca, Tarey of Spokane, WA and Greg of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Cheryle of Bainbridge Island, WA; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five nieces and two nephews. A memorial service celebrating Mr. Ludwick's life will be held at a later date. Rose Hills Mortuary of Whittier is handling the arrangements. |
