On February 15, 2000, Edward A. Spalding, a wonderful father and loving husband, went to be with the Lord at the age of 84. He was born in Portland, Dec. 21, 1915, the son of Clair and Eva (Cramer) Spalding. He lived in the St. Johns area most of his life. He was a veteran and was the retired owner and founder of Industrial Phosphating. Ed married Eva Marie Bushnell June 21, 1937, and she survives him. Also surviving are one daughter, Betty Spalding of Coldwater; one son, James E. Spalding of DeWitt; six grandchildren, Mark Leak, Jamie Hobrla, Paul Leak, Neil Spalding, Sherry Spalding, and Jason Wyman, and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Spalding of Lansing and Bernard Spalding of Hillman; and two sisters, Adeline Moran of Portland and Betty Geller of St. Johns. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Ralph, Leon, & Donald Spalding. A memorial service was held Feb. 18 at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Michigan Parkinson Foundation. Clare M. Feneis, 72, of St. Johns, passed away quietly in his home Feb. 16, 2000. His loving wife, best friend and biggest supporter, Katherine, was by his side through his final moments. He was born Sept. 12, 1927. He served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of V.F.W. Post 4113. He was Commander of Post 4113 during 1965-66 and most recently served as Chaplain and chief pancake-maker. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former employee of Motor Wheel. He is survived by his wife, Katherine; son, Robert; daughters, Suzann (Dennis) Brown of DeWitt, Debra (Larry) Forbes of Elsie; his grandson, Adam Forbes; sisters, Dorothy (Robert) Root, Catherine (Mick) Droste, and special sister-in-law, Leona Karber. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Feneis, mother Esther (Feneis) Exelby, and step-father, Ernest Exelby. Funeral mass was Feb. 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Jose Mundadin officiating. Donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Clinton County or V.F.W. Hospital Equipment Fund. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home. Elsie L. Holden, 73, of Bannister, passed away Feb. 16, 2000. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were Feb. 19 at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Mary Christabel Somers, 82, of Chaplin, passed Feb. 16, 2000. She was a secretary for the Chapin Telephone Company. Funeral services were Feb. 18 at Smith Funeral Home, Elsie Chapel. Paul Lanterman, of St. Johns, went to be with his Lord on Feb. 10, 2000 at the age of 106. He lived in three centuries and saw many changes in his lifetime. He was born in Fort Russell Township, Ill., in 1893. He helped start and build Trinity Baptist Church in Apopka, Fla. He also built Lanterman Cottages in Munsing as well as Lanterman Motor Sales in Chenoa, Ill. He was a Master Mason of Orange Lodge #36 in Apopka, Fla., since 1927. He was preceded in death 22 years ago by his wife, Ada. of 63 years. The oldest of five brothers and sisters, he outlived them all. Surviving are one son, Bruce (Joan Martin) Lanterman; three granddaughters, Kathy (David Kent) Lanterman, Betsy Proctor, Cindy (Dan) Zuker; four great-grandchildren, James Lanterman Cain, Christine Suzanne Louakked, Bruce Lanterman Cain, Adrain Thomas Green. Services were held Feb. 12 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with the Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating.
Leo M. Calder, 98 years and seven months, of Ovid, passed away Feb. 13, 2000 at the Ovid Convolesant Manor. He was born July 4, 1901 in DeWitt Township, the son of William and Julia (Lerg) Calder. As a child he attended the Lott School, competing eight grades with a deep interest in math and agriculture. While working on his father's farm, he also became a teamster hauling gravel with his team of horses to build new roads in DeWitt Township. He married Lucille Brya of DeWitt Township, June 4, 1925, at St. Mary Catholic Cathedral, Lansing. She preceded him in death in 1989. To this union was born sons, Robert Calder of Holt, Dale Calder of St. Johns and Max Calder of DeWitt Township. In addition to his three sons, he is survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. After working the family homestead a few years he purchased a farm in Bingham Township where he farmed and resided until 1998 when he took up residency at the Ovid Health Care Facility. He loved farming and was an accomplished horseman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was cared for from 1989-1998 by Miss Angela Sawyer, and is survived by his very special little friend, Ciara, four years of age. It must be added that he is a direct lineal descendant of the great Catholic Emperor Charlemagne. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church of Wayne. He was predeceased in death by a son, William Calder; a grandson, Jacques Francois Calder; a sister, Lena Letzaw of Lansing; and a brother John Calder of Minneapolis, Minn. The traditional Funeral Mass in Latin was held Feb. 16 at Osgood Funeral Home with Fr. Francisco Radecki officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery. |
