Community mourns loss of a 'gentle woman': Harriet Field

Harriet A. Field, 78, of St. Johns passed away March 14, 2000. She was born in Eaton County Oct. 20, 1921, the daughter of Gerald Eitniear (natural), Ritner Barker (adopted), and Arleen Hough. She lived in St. Johns since 1953.

She was a graduate of Potterville High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Clinton County Historical Society, and Mint Country Garden Club. She was a co-owner/operator of the St. Johns Reminder.

On Aug. 21, 1942, she married Max E. Field. He preceded her in death Feb. 13, 1994.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Ed) Wood of St. Johns; sons, John (Dr. Carol) Field of St. Johns, Mark Field of Holt, and Matthew (Sue) Field of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Barnhart of Lansing and Carolyn Townsend of Marquette and "Little Sister" Lara.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, John K. Kennedy.

Funeral services were March 17 at the First United Methodist Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. The family was served by Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Capital Area Humane Society, or the American Red Cross.

Kenyon L. Dennis

Kenyon Lee Dennis, 62, of Grand Ledge died March 1, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Dennis was the owner of Dennis Trailer Sales in Lansing for 28 years. He was a member of the Lansing Exchange Club, MSU Alumni Association, and served on the board of local, state, and national RV dealers associations. He also coached many youth sports teams in Lansing and Grand Ledge. He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Mary; sons, Greg (April) of Charlotte, Jon (Patti) of Paris, France, David (Sandy) of Olivet, Rick (Sherry) of Grand Ledge; daughter, Julie (Jim) Beyer of Clarkston; 13 grandchildren; and sisters, Sharon (Joe) Acino of Saugatuck and Colleen (Gary) Miller of DeWitt.

Services were held March 6 at St. Mary's Cathedral Catholic Church in Lansing, with Fr. George C. Michalek officiating. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Clinton County or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were handled by Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

 

George Pappas

George N. Pappas, 81, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, died March 12, 2000 in Alma. George was the son of Nick and Virginia (Bourelakos) Pappas. He lived in St. Johns all of his life.

He was a veteran of World War II, and received the Purple Heart. He was a retiree of Sealed Power Corporation, and was the former owner of the Sugar Bowl Restaurant in St. Johns. He was an avid fisherman.

His family includes a sister, Martha Springstead of Alma; a nephew, Dennis (Fran) Springstead of Alma; and great-nieces and nephew, Tiffany Springstead of Grand Rapids, Kristal Springstead and Nicholas Springstead, both of Alma.

Funeral services were held March 15 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Briggs Public Library.

 

Harry Burtovoy

Harry Burtovoy, 70, of Cotton Wood, Calif., passed away March 1, 2000. He was born Oct. 18, 1929 in St. Johns.

He was a bakery administrator for Orawheat Company. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Moose Lodge in Anderson, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Jewel; son, Harry of Hollister, Calif.; daughter, Judy McClurg of San Bruna, Calif.; brothers, Jack and Danniel of Arizona and Tony and Larry of Michigan; sisters, Helen McGinnis, Anna Morrison, Betty Czachowrski, Jackie Didur, Dorothy Baley and Naga Phillips, all of Michigan; and three grandchildren.

Services were held March 4 at Cottonwood, Calif., at the American Legion Hall.

 

Lynn Arnold

Lynn O. Arnold, 85, of St. Johns, passed away March 12, 2000 after a long illness. He was born Dimondale Dec. 18, 1914, the son of Glenn and Eva (Stanton) Arnold. He lived in Clinton County most of his life.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Operating Engineers Union.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Eva Sherburne, Helen Cudney, and Edith Cole.

He is survived by his step-children, Norma (Chuck) Deater of Grant, Alta (Herb) Fisher of St. Johns, Carolyn (Bob) Ingersoll of Breckenridge, Christine Powell of Albion, Leon Cole of St. Johns, and Richard (Linda) Cole of Laingsburg; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held March 25 at the Salem United Methodist Church. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home.

 

Ernest Prowant

Ernest H. Prowant, 97, of Durand, passed away March 15, 2000. He was born in Ohio, Aug. 13, 1902, the son of Lawrence and Mary (Senger) Prowant.

He attended school in Hamilton, Ohio, and lived in Durand since 1936. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He taught himself how to play the violin and liked to repair and restore them. He was a farmer, warehouse manager for Sears and Roebuck in Flint, and worked on the Grand Trunk Railroad as a fireman. He retired from Simplicity Engineering as a metal worker in 1967.

He married Mildred Borst in Middleton Aug. 16, 1923. She preceded him in death in 1985.

He is survived by sons, William Prowant of Gaines, Edgar (Beverly) Prowant of St. Johns; daughter Mrs. Willard (Arlene) Hilgendorf of Perry; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and sister Mrs. Alice Strickland of Durand. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Wilva; a brother and three sisters.

Funeral services were held March 17 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Durand, burial at Lovejoy Cemetery with the Rev. Dallas McFarland officiating.

 

Laura Darling

Laura M. Darling, 88, of Owosso, passed away March, 14, 2000. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were March 17 at Smith Funeral Home, Elsie Chapel.

 

Clement Halfmann

Clement Halfmann, 83, of Fowler, passed away March 16, 2000. He was born in Fowler May 2, 1916, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Schafer) Halfmann. He lived in Fowler all his life. He was a farmer.

He is survived by one brother, Arthur Halfmann of St. Johns, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Margaret Palon, Rose Fink and Lorraine Halfmann; and three brothers, Leo, Edward and Isadore Halfmann.

Funeral mass was celebrated March 18 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Educational Fund. The family was served by the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler.

 

Roy Elwood Sr.

Roy L. Elwood Sr., 67, of Ovid, passed away March 15, 2000. He was born in Lansing May 8, 1932, the son of Dee and Bernice (Parkinson) Elwood. He lived most of his life in the Ovid area, and graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1950.

He was a member of the Cornerstone Church of God in Owosso. He was a furnace repairman in Owosso for over 20 years. He retired from Clinton County where he was a maintenance worker for the Clinton County Courthouse for 13 years.

He married Thelma Harper Dec. 19, 1951 in Ovid, and she survives him. Also surviving are six children, Teresa Elwood and special friend Mark Laws of Rochester Hills, Bonnie Johnson and special friend John Gall of Ovid, Roy (Christine) Elwood of Owosso, Rodney Elwood of Tennessee, Ricky (Teresa) Elwood of Owosso, Randy (Angela) Elwood of Ovid; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lela (Duane) Witsel of Sears, Ella (A.D.) Bancroft of Maple Rapids; and two brothers, Dale Elwood of California, Joe (Cathy) Elwood of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Funeral services were March 18 at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel, burial at Newburg Cemetery, Shiawassee Township, with the Rev. John Rathbun officiating. Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Church of God, Owosso.
