Aloysius B. "Al" Becker

Aloysius B. "Al" Becker died March 24, 2000 at the age of 89.  Born February 14, 1911, he was the son of Frank and Pauline (Platte) Becker and owned/operated Becker's Appliance Store for 23 years.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.  

Al married Florence Thelen August 23, 1939 and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Jane (John) Sira of St. Johns and Mary (Dane) Flegel of Caledonia, three sons, Daniel (JoAnn) Becker of Virginia, Dennis (Carole) Becker of Ann Arbor and Duane (Marilyn) Becker of St. Johns, 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchild.  Al is also survived by one sister, Loretta "Billie" Ball of Fowler.  

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Jose Mundadin officiating.   A rosary will be prayed 7:00 P.M. Sunday and Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home.   The family will receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 Sunday and Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to St. Joseph School Educational Fund or Clinton Memorial Hospital. 

Adeline A. Pung

Adeline A. Pung, 74, of Westphalia died March 16, 2000. She was born in Westphalia June 20, 1925, the daughter of John and Rose (Hoppes) Smith.

Mrs. Pung was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Westphalia and the Christian Mothers. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers, which was shown by the many flowers at her home. She loved and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Surviving are children, Michael (Karen) Pung of Eagle, Barb (Denny Cramer) Pung of Lansing, Sue Fedewa of Portland, and David (Julie) Pung of DeWitt; grandchildren, Michelle Barker, Tom, John and Brian Pung, Jill, Doug and Stacey Fedewa, and Erik Pung; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Trent, and Grant Barke. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cyril Pung; and sisters, Catherine Nurenberg and Josephine Pung.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 20 by the Rev. William Ashbaugh at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Clinton Memorial and Sparrow. Arrangements were made by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Louise M. Schafer

Louise M. Schafer, 95, of Westphalia died March 9, 2000. She was born in Westphalia Aug. 9, 1904, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Rademacher) Thelen.

Mrs. Schafer was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Parish and the Christian Mothers. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her children, Stanley (Rose) Schafer and Jerome (Adeline) Schafer, both of Westphalia, Marie Schomisch of Fowler, Germaine (Carl) May of Portland, and Therese (Stanley) Klein, Eugene (Margaret) Schafer, Mark (Mary Lee) Schafer, and Betty Schafer, all of Westphalia; 38 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Armbrustmacher of Fowler; brothers, Norman Thelen, Sylvester (Esther) Thelen, and Walter (Laurina) Thelen, all of Westphalia; sisters-in-law, Irene Thelen, Agnes Thelen, Rita Thelen, and Joan Thelen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, in 1957; son-in-law, Leonard Schomisch, in 1989; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two sisters and three brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 13 by the Rev. William Ashbaugh at St. Mary's Church. Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. Arrangements were made by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Raymond J. Torpey

He was born in St. Louis, MI on March 26, 1926, the son of Raymond and Pauline (Stahl) Torpey and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He worked in tool and die at both Saylor-Beall & General Motors and retired after 43 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, was an usher, and was very active in  church activities.  Raymond married Nellie O’Boyle on December 23, 1945 and she survives him. Also surviving are one son, Terry (Linda) Torpey of Boulder, CO, one daughter, Claudette (Rick) Areddy of Aurora, OH, four grandchildren, twins, Jennifer and Melissa Torpey, Rick Areddy and Ashley Areddy, and many cousins. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 27, 2000 at the First Baptist Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Tim Knaus Sr. Pastor, Scott Becker Pastor of Discipleship/Small Groups, and Curt Petrak Pastor of Youth officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Evelyn M. Moulder-Roberts

Evelyn M. Moulder-Roberts died March 23, 2000 at the age 54. She was born in Ovid Township on April 22, 1945, the daughter of Ellis and Helen (Loreff) Moulder, lived most of her life in Bath and was a housekeeper. Surviving are one son, Jerry Moulder of Bath, two brothers, Richard Moulder of Harrison and Mike (Janet) Moulder of Grayling, one sister, Joyce (Ron) Shipley of Harrison, several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Gary Roberts. Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Monday, March 27, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Reed Cemetery with Pastor Jerald Wardell officiating. 

Barbara L. Willett

Barbara L. Willett, of Ovid, died March 23, 2000 at the age of 73. She was born in Pompeii, MI on October 26, 1916, the daughter of Willie and Maude J. (Lindsey) Stedman and had lived in Ovid since 1946. Barbara graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1944, was a former Scout and 4-H leader, was an avid painter and loved to play Scrabble. 

She married L. Bernon Willett in Ovid on September 22, 1946 and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1985. She leaves behind and will be greatly missed by son, Dale (Linda) Willett of Ovid, daughter, Suzanne (Ron) Simpson of St. Johns, grandchildren, Dominic (Joanne) Willett of Grand Rapids, Jennifer (Spencer) Korson of Midland, Jeremy Simpson of St. Johns, Sean, Cory, and Zachary Willett of Ovid, great grandchildren, Brooklyn Willett of Grand Rapids & Cassidy Korson of Midland, several nieces and nephews, special Scrabble buddy and friend, Albertine Murray of Ovid, and special friends, Eldora and Sharon Pringle of Clio. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 1 brother, Roland Stedman and 2 sisters, Wilma and Flossie Stedman. 

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Fenmore Baptist Church, 7888 N. Hollister Rd., Elsie, on Monday, March 27, 2000 at 1:30 PM with Pastor William Stites officiating. Memorials may be made to the Fenmore Baptist Church. Arrangements by the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes.

Sarah Hooker

Sarah "Myrtle" Hooker, 92, of Livonia, passed away March 20, 2000. She was born August 6, 1907 in Aylwin, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Thomas and Isabella (McKittrick) McConnell.

She was married to Leon Hooker May 8, 1948. She and her husband lived in the Livonia area for many years.

She is survived by four nieces, Linda (Dennis) Cascaden of Lewiston, Lois (Art) Curtis of Elsie, Irma Fowler of Owosso, Doris (Cap) Potter of Cheboygan and a nephew, Floyd Pixley of Owosso; also several nieces and nephews in Canada; three special "grandchildren" and many great-nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Athalie McConnell of Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, and three brothers, Thomas, William and Wilfred McConnell.

Funeral services were March 23 at Dodge Funeral Home, Middleton with the Rev. Ried Martin officiating. Interment was at Soule Cemetery in Maple Rapids. The family was served by the Dodge Funeral Home, Middleton.

 

Raymond Weber

Raymond L. Weber, 80, of Fowler, passed away March 22, 2000. He was born in Fowler Dec. 18, 1919, the son of Peter and Anna (Goerge) Weber.

He retired from Saylor-Beall Manufacturing Company as a setup man after 37 years of service. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Holy Name Service, and Union Local #925. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to play cards.

He is survived by two sisters, Leona Bauer of St. Johns and Angela Thelen of Fowler; three brothers, Harold Weber of Ionia, Melvin (Ilene) Weber of St. Johns, and Urban (Marie) Weber of Fowler; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Norman Weber; one sister-in-law, Jean Weber; and two brothers-in-law, Julius Thelen and Harold Bauer.

Funeral mass was March 25 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. The family was served by the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home.

Charles "Chuck" Gorman

Charles D. "Chuck" Gorman, 46, of Eagle, passed away March 19, 2000. He was active in football and wrestling throughout his school years and was an avid sportsman, always hunting, fishing and stalking any kind of animal that swam, ran, hopped, galloped or flew. He would have rather spent his time outdoors than anywhere else.

He spent his professional time, the last 31 years, helping his father and two brothers operate Gorman's Food Market in north Lansing. He has made hundreds of friends through his business and sporting adventures and his smiling face is sure to be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ottilia Gorman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Robin; his father and step-mother, Dan and Shirley Gorman; his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Marylou Karkau; brothers and sisters, Marlene (Hal) Somervill, Marilee (Kevin) Potter, Jim (Debbie) Gorman, Marilyn (Scott) Dalman, Pat (Brenda) Gorman; nieces and nephews, Jenny, Heather, Curt, Mackenzie, Matthew, LJ and Dalton; brothers and sister-in-law, Dave (Kathy) Karkau, Mike Karkau, Wenday (Steve) Night; nieces and nephews, Amber, Denise, Mike, Vincent and his special niece "Fuzz."

Chuck's spirit now soars on the wings of eagles where the air is pure, the morning crisp and the heaven spread out before him.

Funeral services were held March 23 at the Community of St. Jude, DeWitt. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Pheasants Forever, 1200 W. Taft Rd., St. Johns, MI 48879. The family was served by the Palmer-Bush Delta Chapel, Lansing.

Eugene Welton

Eugene D. Welton, 64, of Houghton Lake and formerly of St. Johns, passed away March. 17, 2000 after a long battle with cancer since 1986. He was born in St. Johns March 20, 1935, the son of Lester and Vivian (Scott) Welton.

He was a painter for General Motors and retired from General Motors. He was a member of the American Legion in St. Johns.

He married Connie Atkinson Nov. 23, 1956 in Angola, Ind., and she survives him. Also surviving are five children, Vicky (Gary) Alcoin of Mt. Pleasant, Diane Welton, Sheila Witt and her friend Jerry Lott all of St. Johns, Alan Welton, Daryl Welton both of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Dale (Liz) Welton of Dimondale; one sister, Marilyn Miles and her friend Ron Wheeler of Ithaca; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Vivian (Scott) Welton; and grandson, Derrick Welton.

A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., April 1, at 505 W. Higham St., St. Johns for family and friends. The family was served by the Steuernol-McLaren Funeral Home, Houghton Lake.

 

Alberta Hopp

Alberta G. Hopp, 82, of St. Johns, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away March 20, 2000, at her daughter's home surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Riley Township Feb. 5, 1918, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Coffman) Irrer.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Riley, where she helped form the first Widower/Widows group. She had served on the Altar Guild, helped with funeral and senior lunches, and in the kitchen for Vacation Bible School. Alberta and Victor also served as youth counselors for the Walter League, and on PTA and AAL committees for many years.

She married Victor Hopp May 27, 1936. He passed away May 10, 1983.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Yvonne and William Flegler of St. Johns; her grandchildren, Wm. Scott and Dana Flegler of St. Johns, Vicki Flegler of Grandville, and Kristie (Michael) Fleischmann of Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.; four precious great-grandchildren, Wm. Collin and Makayla Flegler, Evan and Wesley Fleischmann; her beloved niece and friend, Lillian Law; nephew, Larry (Phyllis) Irrer and niece Darlene (Jim) McCarty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; brother, Harold (Arlene) Irrer; three sisters, Florence (Richard) Rossow, Emma (Everett) Swaney, Lucille (Kenneth) Barto; nephew, Robert Law; great-nephew, Brent Law.

Funeral services were held March 24 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, burial at St. Peter Cemetery, Riley Township, with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to: The Brent Law Memorial Fund of St. Peter Lutheran Church, or Hospice of Clinton County. The family was served by the Smith Funeral Home.

Rita B. Simon

simon-r.jpg (6717 bytes)Rita B. Simon, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died March 20, 2000 at the age of 78. She was born in Pewamo on October 15, 1921, the daughter of Mathias and Elizabeth (Klein) Miller and lived in Fowler the last 55 years.

She was a homemaker, a graduate of Pewamo High School, a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. Rita married Roman Simon in Fowler on May 29, 1945 and he survives her. Also surviving are ten children, Anne (Rick) Auger of Renton, WA, Mary (Bill) Fitzpatrick, Dennis (Diane) Simon, both of Fowler, Marilyn (William) Dixon of Sheridan, Dan (Linda) Simon, George (Cindy) Simon, both of Fowler, Jan Simon (Dale Murray) of St. Johns, Steve (Denise) Simon of Fowler, Sharon Thelen of Portland, and Rose (Brian) Thelen of St. Johns, 31 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and three sisters, Edna Griffith of Pellston, Martha Boog of Lansing and Sister Jeanette Miller S.S.J. of Kalamazoo.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald Simon and Robert Simon, one daughter, Marianne Simon, three grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, and John, two brothers, Fr. Aloysius Miller  and Fr. Martin Miller, and three sisters, Lillian Miller, Eleanor Miller, and Sister Marianne Miller S.S.J.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 24, 2000 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday and Thursday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, with Rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Wednesday, and 3 P.M. Thursday, and a scripture service 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

She will be sadly missed but never forgotten by all those who knew and loved her.
 

Alexis Elaine Kieffer


Alexis Elaine Kieffer, infant daughter of Dennis and Nicole (Ritter) Kieffer, passed away March 19, 2000. 

She is survived by her parents, grandparents, Dennis and Sandy Kieffer of Howard City, Genny Keener and Dave Ritter, and Les and Rose Ritter, all of St. Johns, great grandparents, Esther and Clifford Carey of St. Johns, Bernice Smith of Farwell, Richard and Josephine Parmenter, and Walt and Delores Kieffer, all of St. Johns and three aunts, Stacey Ritter, Tina Kieffer, and Aleisha Kieffer, all of St. Johns. 

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, March 23, 2000 at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.
 

William Schulze

William C.Schulze, 85, of Caro, passed away March 17, 2000. He was born on Feb. 19, 1915 at the family home in Clinton County.

He was a graduate of Fowler High School and lived in Bay City prior to moving to Caro in 1951. He spent most of his working career with the Thumb Electric Cooperative and retired as a plant operator from the Caro facility.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Caro, the Usher Club, the I.B.E.W., N.R.A., and the Tuscola County Conservation Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and for many years enjoyed CB radios.

He married Della Stoll May 23, 1942 in Unionville. She preceded him in death Oct. 6, 1987.

He is survived by one son, Paul (Erma) Schulze of Linwood; his grandchildren Kimberly and 1st Lt. Justin Brown of Georgetown, Texas; one sister, Winnifred (Wilbur) Stewart of Perrinton; one brother, Kenneth (Marge) Schulze of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Donna Schulze of Maple Rapids; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held March 20 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, burial at Silverlawn Cemetery, Sebewaing, with the Rev. David Hollender officiating. Memorials may be made to the Schulze Family Descretionary Fund. The family was served by the Collon Funeral Home, Caro.

Marjorie Bolin

Margorie L. Bolin, 76, of Perrinton, passed away March 17, 2000. She was a retired florist. Funeral services were held March 21 at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.
