Ward J. Wakefield

Ward J. Wakefield died June 6, 2000 at the age of 72. He was born in Greenbush Township on December 15, 1927, the son of Ernest and Flossie (Adams) Wakefield and lived in Clinton County all of his life. He was a farmer and factory worker, a member of Mid-Michigan Old Gas Tractors Association, and attended Greenbush United Methodist Church all of his life. Ward married Nancy Husted in Eureka on June 16, 1983 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are four children, Connie (Bob) Blackmer of St. Johns, Eric Wakefield of Elsie, Daria (Bruce) Aldrich of St. Johns, and Jay (Doreen) Wakefield of Laingsburg, their mothers, Helen Wakefield of St. Johns and Ruby Knickerbocker of CA, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step children, Joe Wonsey, Ida (Charles) Lehner, and Scott Husted, six step grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren, and one sister, Evelyn Slagel of AR. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Wade Wakefield, one sister, Carol Jean Wakefield, and his parents. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 9, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jean M. Woodbury

Jean M. Woodbury died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at the age of 71. She was born in Lansing on October 16, 1928 the daughter of Clarence and Geneva (Hebeler) Kaltrider and lived in the St. Johns area most all her life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served as organist, OES Chapter #79, was a former Girl Scout Leader, Girl Scout Mother of the Year, member of the Morning Musicale group, piano teacher and along with her husband owned and operated Woodbury Flower Shop in St. Johns.  Jean married Howard Woodbury on June 6, 1948 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Rhonda (William) Hambleton of Lansing and Marie (Charles) Bengel of Williamston, two sons, Wayne (Diana) Woodbury and Brian (Maralyn) Woodbury all of St. Johns, six grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, one sister, Betty Wilbur of St. Johns,several nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Norm (Janet) Woodbury of FL, and sister-in-law Frances Greene of MA. 

Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 8, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Donald Zimmerman officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes.

George F. Tucker

George F. Tucker, of Naubinway formerly of DeWitt, died June 5, 2000 at the age of 76. He was born in Lansing on December 14, 1923, the son of Louis and Effie (Donielson) Tucker. He was a Traffic Analyst for the State Highway Department, a U.S. Army W.W. II veteran, a life member of V.F.W. Post #8372 and the D.A.V., and a former member of the Elk’s Club. George married Thelma Mercer on March 2, 1946 in Lansing and she survives him.  

Also surviving are one son, Gerry (Becky) Tucker of Mesick, one grandson, Frank Tucker, several nieces and nephews, one sister, Vesta Leiter of Lansing, one sister-in-law, Crystal Tucker of FL, and one brother-in-law, Marvin Feather of Harbor Springs. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 10, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Sowle Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. The family will receive friends 4-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
 

Owen D. Eshenroder

Owen D. Eshenroder died June 4, 2000 at the age of 79. He was born in Monroe, MI on May 17, 1921, the son of William and Minnie (Kull) Eshenroder and lived most of his life in Wyandotte. He was a chemical engineer, a 1943 graduate of the University of Michigan, World War II veteran, a member of the Wy-Chem Club and the First Congregational Church of Wyandotte. Owen married Marjorie Milne in Wyandotte on October 6, 1945 and she preceded him in death in 1986. 

Surviving are four children, Barbara (Len) Floyd, Patricia (Gerry) Congleton, Bill (Stacie) Eshenroder, and Jane Eshenroder, five grandchildren, Emily Eshenroder, Michael Floyd, Sarah Floyd, Blake Eshenroder, and Kayla Eshenroder, and four nephews. 

Memorial services will be 4:00 P.M. Sunday, July 16, 2000 at the First Congregational Church in Wyandotte. Memorials may be made to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Lillian Tiedt

Lillian Tiedt died June 3, 2000 at the age of 90. Born in Riley Township on August 27, 1909, she was the daughter of William H. and Louise J. (Martens) Silm. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide, was past president of St. Johns Women’s Bowling Association, loved golfing, and was involved with the Clinton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Lillian’s marriage of 64 years to Lorenz Tiedt on September 16, 1931 ended with his death March 18, 1995. 

She is survived by two sons, Allen (Cynthia) Tiedt of St. Johns and Larry (Gladys) Tiedt of Highland Village, Texas, one daughter, Judy (Gary) Hyde of St. Johns, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her two brothers, Herman and Lewis Silm. 

Funeral service will by 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Richard Lieske officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Charles Hunt

Charles C. Hunt, 38, of DeWitt, passed away June 3, 2000. He was born in West Branch June 9, 1961 the son of John and Anna (Lewis) Hunt.

He attended Brady and Oakley Elementary, and graduated in 1979 from Chesaning Union High School. He graduated from Central Michigan University in 1983 with a bachelor degree in history and business administration.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends and fondly remembered for his love of history and keen sence of humor. He loved to golf, bowl, and bike and to watch his children play soccer and basketball. He belonged to the Tri County Biking Association. He worked for the State of Michigan and was a C.P.A.

He marrried Deborah Rehmann Nov. 26, 1983 in Chesaning.

Survivors include his wife Deborah; children Katelyn and Lauren; his parents John and Anna of Grawn; brothers and sisters, Catherine Hunt and husband Jack Treachout of Brighton; John Jr. (Allison) Hunt of Cooper City, Fla., Jean Hunt and husband David Stone of Oakpark, Ill., Connie Hunt of Suttons Bay, Jodi Hunt of Brazil; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandparents and four uncles.

Funeral services were held June 8 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home (McDougall Chapel) in Laingsburg, with the Rev. Fr. Dwight Ezop officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Ells Place or the college fund for his children. The family was served by the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home (McDougall Chapel).

June Black

June Wright Black, 70, of Perrinton and Bradenton, Fla., passed away April 6, 2000.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, James; two sons, Jeff (Raia) Black of Okeechobee, Fla., and Colby (Paula) Black of Frostproof, Fla.; one daughter, Candice (Paul) Walker of Okeechobee, Fla.; seven grandchildren; one sister Geraldine Warner of Perrinton.

A memorial service was held at the Perrinton United Methodist Church June. 10 with Pastor Jodie Flessner officiating.

Donald Graig Hoffman

Donald Graig Hoffman, born in Flint Feb. 27, 1936, to Ernest and Nell (Jenkins) Hoffman, left to be with his wife of 42 years on May 31. She preceded him in death April 9.

Don retired as general foreman in parts operations at General Motors in 1990 after 36 years of service. He attended Culver Military Academy and served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed restoring old boats and antique furniture. Don's energy and zest for life will live on in all of those he touched. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Surviving are daughters Dana Hoffman of DeWitt and Karen (Peter) Pokryfkl of Rochester Hills; grandchildren Joshua and Lauren; sister Linda (Wally) Mattison of Flushing; nephews Brett and Brad; and many cousins and friends.

Services will be held June 4 at 2 p.m. at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Rose Swagart

Rose Swagart, 82, of St. Johns, passed away June 6, 2000. She was born Jan. 3, 1918 in St. Johns the daughter of Fred and Marie (Proks) Simunek.

She lived most of her life in the St. Johns area. She graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1935. She worked for Federal Mogul for 31 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Pilgrim United Methodist Church in St. Johns.

She married Wayne Swagart Nov. 17, 1935 in Langrange Ind. He preceded her in death Aug. 3, 1998.

Survivors include one son, Jon (Villa) Swagart of St. Johns; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Zimmerman of Portland; one brother, Fred (Phyllis) Simunek of St. Johns; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sandra; a great-granddaughter, Audrey; and brother, Charles Simunek.

Funeral services were held June 9 at Smith Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Raymond Sundell officiating. Memorials may be made to Pilgrim United Methodist Church or American Cancer Society.

 

Jack Hill

Jack Hill, 69, of Mount Clemens, formerly of St. Johns, passed away June 4, 2000. Funeral services have already taken place.

 

Ethel "Sally" Ann Young

Ethel "Sally" Ann Young, 70, of Ovid, passed away June 6, 2000. She was born in Lansing June 15, 1929, and lived most of her life in Ovid.

She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She bowled in leagues many years and crocheted afghans.

She married Donald Yound March 12, 1949.

Survivors include her husband of over 50 years Don Young of Ovid; children Pam (Jerry) Hedrick of Lapeer, Donald (Laura) Young of Florida, Patricia (Charlie) Carroll of Hale, Deb Kingmen of Owosso; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held June 9 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. The family was served by the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

 

Charles "Chuck" Fisher

Charles D. "Chuck" Fisher, 74, of DeWitt, passed away May 29, 2000. He was born March 4, 1926, the son of Merrill and Mable Fisher.

He worked for General Motors for 33 years and retired in 1980. He worked for Standard Block for 12 years. He enjoyed working on automobile and tractors.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Katherine; one son Kevin (Sharon Clark) Fisher of DeWitt; daughter-in-law, Connie Fisher of Florida; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill (Arlene) of Ohio and Herbert (Alta) of St. Johns; two sisters, Babe Rogers of Eaton Rapids and Betty Raymer of Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Larry and Charles Fisher.

Funeral services were held June 2 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, interment at Wacousta Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association, Wege Center, 300 Lafayette, S.E. Suite L. 2051, Grand Rapids, MI. 49503 or the American Cancer Society, 3315 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing, 48910 in memory of Mr. Fisher.

Elizabeth M. Schneider

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schneider, 68, of Westphalia died June 3, 2000. She was born in Pewamo March 11, 1932, the daughter of Joseph L. and Ida (Spitzley) Fox.

Mrs. Schneider was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Past President of the Christian Mothers.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Herman J. of Westphalia; children, Joseph (Kathy) of Lyons, Luke (Deb) of Portland, Frank of Westphalia, Gary (Eileen) Westphalia, Timothy (Brenda) of Matherton, Julaine (Dana) Dygert of Matherton, Ronald (Sandy) of Pewamo, Michelle (Jim) Britten of St. Johns, and Scott (Tonya) of Owosso; 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister, Delores (Roy) Kramer of Paris; brothers, Bill Fox of Vermontville, Stanley (Therese) Fox of Fowler, Carl (Carol) Fox of Pewamo, Sylvester (Virginia) Fox of Vermontville, Richard (Cheryl) Fox of Vestaburg, Ambrose (Kathy) Fox of Portland, and Mark Fox of Wacousta; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 7 by the Rev. William Ashbaugh at St. Mary's Church in Westphalia. Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
