Woodrow W. Bashore

Woodrow W. "Woody" Bashore, 87, of Brandenton, Fla., formerly of Elsie, passed away July 14, 2000. He was a former Hammer-man at Dana Corp in Lansing with over 30 years of service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., July 25, at the Elsie United Methodist Church. The family was served by the Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Dorothy M. Houghten

Dorothy M. Houghten died July 17, 2000 at the age of 78. She was born in Defiance, OH on October 12, 1921, the daughter of Vernon and Goldie (Matson) Knoll and lived in St. Johns since 1947. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary for 50 years, the First United Methodist Church and the Ruth Elizabeth Circle, and belonged to a bowling league for many years. Dorothy married Herbert Houghten in Rochester, MI on June 12, 1935 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are one son, Paul V. (Beverly) Houghten of St. Johns, one daughter, Patricia (Gregory) Teichman of St. Johns, two grandchildren, Lisa Perkins of St. Johns and Mitchell Houghten of Florida, four great grandchildren, Lindsay, Chad, Adam, and Amanda, one sister, Shirley Brewer of Sterling Heights, MI, and brother-in-law, Jim Simmons of Rochester Hills, MI. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one sister, and one brother. 

Funeral services will be 11:30 A.M. Thursday, July 20, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, with Rev. Carol Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M.Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital or Capital Area Humane Society.

Irene E. Henry

Irene E. Henry died July 15, 2000 at the age of 85. She was born in Leslie on December 18, 1914, the son of Arthur M. and Alma I. (Higdon) Dutton and lived most of her life in Flint. She retired from Sears Roebuck in 1974 and was a gourmet cook at several establishments. Irene married John H. Henry in St. Johns on September 15, 1950 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are one daughter, Allene (Eddie) Foland of Ashley, one son, Earl (Sharron) Henry of Grand Blanc, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one sister, Nancy Kurncz of St. Johns, one sister-in-law, Jean Dutton of Maple Rapids, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, John Henry, one sister, Bessie (Davis) Bentley, and one brother, Eugene A. Dutton. 

Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 30, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Genesys Hospice Care Center, 7280

Shirley L. Taylor

Shirley L. Taylor died July 15, 2000 at the age of 67. She was born in Lansing on March 3, 1933, the daughter of John and Onita (Twitchell) Gardner and lived most of her life in Clinton County. She retired from General Motors Parts Division after 23 years of service. Shirley married Richard Taylor in Clinton County on October 8, 1949 and he survives her.  

Also surviving are three sons, Richard Taylor, Michael Taylor, and Gary (Mary) Taylor, all of St. Johns, one daughter, Penny Pitts of Lansing, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and four sisters, Geraldine (Wesley) Farrier of Maple Rapids, Betty   (Pete) Ladiski of Ovid, Luella (Forest) Tefft of Florida, and Gladys (Chuck) Church of Shiawassee County. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Alice Purvis, Esther Twitchell, Annabell Ness, and Belva Fidler, and one brother, William Gardner. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Monday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Helping Hands, P.O. Box 71, West Branch, MI 48661.

Hubert Charles Rose

Hubert Charles Rose died July 14, 2000 at the age of 60. Born in Ashley, Michigan   on January 10, 1940 the son of Milan and Mabyn Pearl (Walker) Rose.  He was a member of the U.A.W. having retired from General Motors. 

Charlie is survived by special friend, Mary Bennett of Maple Rapids, three daughters, Paula Chick, Patricia (Travis) Braman of Ionia, and Lisa Rose, eight grandchildren, Desiree, L.J., Dylan, Brianna, Corey, Tara, Journey, and Elizabeth.  Charlie also has four stepsisters, Dorothy (Jerry) Bashore of Lake, Jean Dutton of Maple Rapids, Edith (Milton) Marble of Chesaning, and Patricia (Henry) Nemetz of Maple Rapids.  He was preceded in death by his parents and stepbrother, Robert Bennett. 

Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids with Rev. Steven Lang and Rev. Charlie Farnum officiating.  The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Elizabeth A. Nobis

Elizabeth A. Nobis, 94, of Scottsdale, Ariz. passed away June 27, 2000. Born Elizabeth Ann Johnson Feb. 13, 1916 in Longmount, Colo., she grew up in Brighton, Colo. She and her late sister, Peg McLellan, just one year apart, were very close and attended the University of Colorado together, both becoming lifelong members of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

She was a creative and inspiring elementary school teacher admired by her students and respected by her peers. She taught for 30 years in the Vicksburg, Loudenville NY., and St. Johns school systems.

She was very active in the Republican party and for some years chaired the Clinton County Republican Party. During her political activities, she worked on behalf of and had the honor of meeting Presidents Ford and Bush and former Michigan Governor William Milliken. In appreciation of her service, Gov. Milliken appointed her to a state committee on dental issues.

She was a tireless caregiver for her late husband, Paul Nobis, and sister Peg during their illnesses. She was also preceded in death by husband, Arthur Katt. Besides her family and friends, she enjoyed the companionship of her faithful dog, Max, and keeping up on current events including her lifelong enthusiasm for sports.

She is survived by son, David Katt of Spartanburg, S.C., and Peter Katt of Texas Township; stepsons, Kenneth Nobis and Larry Nobis of St. Johns and stepdaughter, Marilee Jacobsen of Arvada, Colo.; grandchildren, Marnee Farley of Newport Beach, Erinn and Noah Katt of Texas Township; and Kerry, Mitchell, Michael, Brian and William Nobis of St. Johns; great-grandchildren, Megan and Sarah Farley of Newport Beach.

Services were held June 30 at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. Donations can be given in her memory to St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 247 W. Lovell Street, Kalamazoo, MI., 49007.

 

Kathryn E. Williams

Kathryn E. "Kay" Williams, 82, of Alden, passed away July 9, 2000 at home following a lengthy illness. The daughter of Orvin and Lois (Moore) Wheeler, she was born Sept. 11, 1917 in Lansing.

On Dec. 1, 1946, in Mason, she marred John Williams Jr., who survives her. She was a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University with a BA in communication. She was employed at MSU for 25 years, retiring as an administrative assistant in the College of Communication Arts in 1981. She has lived in Alden since 1983, having moved there from St. Johns.

She was a member of O.E.S. St. Johns Chapter No. 49, St. Johns V.F.W. Ladies Aux. No. 4113; St. Johns American Legion Aux. No. 0153; and the Rebekah Lodge No. 139 of St. Johns. She was an avid reader.

Surviving are four children, Ernie (Barbara) of Lewiston, Idaho; John III "Nick" (Jeannine) of Lansing, Kris (Sue) of East Jordan, Lois (John) Newhouse of Haslett; many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is being planned for a future date. Memorials in Kay's name may be directed to one's choice of the St. Johns organizations mentioned above.

The family was served by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

 

Ruth Ferrall

 

Age 83 of Bannister passed away Tuesday July 11, 2000 at her home. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13, 2000, at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel with Pastor Robert Ditmer officiating. Burial took place at Eureka Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home was Wednesday 2-9, with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m.

Mrs. Ferrall was born in Graveland, New York on July 18, 1916, the daughter of James & Eva (Vincent) Scott. She attended Emerson school and Owosso High School. On February 17, 1935 she married Arnold Bearup, he predeceased her. She then married Ray D. Ferrall on December 7, 1946. He passed away on November 13, 1994. During the war Ruth worked at Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan and then worked at Redmond Company of Owosso. She was a member of Eureka Christian Church and the Ladies Auxilary V.F.W. #1735 of Perrinton. She lived most of her in the Owosso and Bannister areas.

Survivors include two grandchildren; Wendy & Robert Stollstiemer of Elsie, MI and Billy & Crystal Klier of St. Johns, MI; seven great grandchildren, one sister, Doris Schlaack of Swartz Creek, MI, and one brother, Wayne Scott of East Lansing, MI. She was predeceased by three sons, Donald, James and Roland Bearup, two brothers, a sister, her parents and two husbands.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Connie Lee Berry

Connie Lee Berry, 62, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away June 27, 2000. He was the son of Angus and Mary (Hull) Berry.

He joined the Navy while in high school at Rodney B. Wilson High, St. Johns, where he graduated. He was voted honor man of his company at Great Lakes, by the men and officers. After boot camp he married "Midge" Yurek who survives him. During his Navy hitch he spent a winter "froze in" on a tanker near the South Pole. Leaving the Navy at age 21, his Navy rate in electronics qualified him for I.B.M. where he retired after 35 years. In his spare time he attended community college and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Doctorate in the Science of Anthropology.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

He is survived by his wife "Midge"; three children; three grandchildren; sister, "Janie" (Don) Phelps; father and step-mother, Cleora (Reed) Berry.

Services and cremation were held in Virginia Beach, Va. June 30.

 

Harold Welhusen

Harold Welhusen, 85, of Harrison, formerly of Lansing, passed away July 10, 2000. He was born Feb. 18, 1915 in St. Johns. He was employed by Fisher Body and Demmer Tool and Die of Lansing.

He was united in marriage to Aleta Wolcott July 27, 1935 in Maple Rapids.

Surviving are his wife Aleta of Harrison; one son, Melvin Welhousen of Lansing; two daughters-in-law, Mary Welhusen of Harrison and Vickie Welhusen of Dearborn; one sister, Josephine Bishop of Midland; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, three sons, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were July 14 at Stocking Funeral Home in Harrison with the Rev. Jerry Britton officiating. Interment was in Summerfield Twp. Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Leota Community Church.

 

Lucinda A. Craig

Lucinda Ann "Cindy" Craig, 52, of Elsie, passed away July 12, 2000. She was born in Owosso Jan. 28, 1948, the daughter of Donald and Dorothea (Hoshield) Kelley. She lived most of her life in the Elsie and St. Johns areas.

She graduated with the Class of 1966 from Elsie High School. She was a Diamond Infinity Designer for Home and Garden Party, Inc.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Porubsky of St. Johns; a son, Joseph (Tammie) Porubsky of Elsie; three grandchildren, Beth, Shallin and Michael; parents, Donald and Dorothea Kelley of Elsie; one sister, Connie (Wayne) Underhill of Ovid; three brothers, Alan (Mary) Kelley of Prudenville, Dale (Penny) of Elsie, Rodger (Joy) Kelley of Troy, Mo., many nieces and nephews; and two special men in her life, Joseph Porubsky and Randy Craig.

Funeral services were July 15 at Smith Funeral Home, Elsie Chapel, burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie with the Rev. Murl Eastman officiating.
