Loren L. Avery

Loren L. Avery died September 25, 2000 at the age of 92. He was born in Cedar Lake, MI on April 26, 1908, the son of George R. and Lillie (Hough) Avery and lived most of his life in Cedar Lake. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Johns. 

Surviving are many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Cedar Lake Cemetery with Pastor Olan Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Johns.

Virginia J. Dunkel

Virginia J. Dunkel died Saturday, September 23, 2000 at the age of 78. She was born in Victor Township, Clinton County, Michigan on June 29, 1922, the daughter of Lloyd and Irene (Austin) Upton and lived most of her life in the Ovid area. She was a 1940 graduate of Ovid High School and a long time member of the Ovid Acme Society and V F W Auxillary. Virginia married Woodard Dunkel on September 15, 1945 and he preceded her in death on May 20,1979. 

Surviving is one son Norman, one sister Doris Byrnes, both of Ovid, and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her parents and one sister, Barbara Vaniman.  

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2000 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ovid Library.

Dorothea H. Drew

drew.gif (15034 bytes)Age 92 of Elsie died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at The Laurels Of Fulton Nursing Home in Perrinton, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 22, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. at Rochester Colony United Methodist Church in Duplain Township, Michigan. Dorothea’s family will officiate and burial will take place in Duplain Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church at 11:00 A.m. until the time of the service.

She was born in Maple Rapids, Michigan on October 23, 1907, the daughter of George and Anne (Lake) Heibeck. She graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1925. On August 13, 1936 she married Warren Drew in Michigan City, Indiana. He died in 1985. She was a member of the Rochester Colony United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and lived in Rochester Colony area most of her life.

Survivors include two daughters; Rachel & Bob Houska of Elsie, Diane Drew Vitek of Edmore, one son; Warren Drew of Kalamazoo, 14 grandchildren and 22 Great grandchildren, one sister, Agatha Robinson, and one niece Beverly Murrey both of Duluth, MN. She was predeceased by one son (infancy), Robert Warren Drew, Daughter-in-Law, Norma, and Grandson, Robert Drew.

Memorials may be made to the Family.

Priscilla H. Hindes

Priscilla (Paul) Hamilton Hindes, 79, of Okemos, widow of Howard H. Hindes, died Sept. 15, 2000, at the Ingham County Medical Care Facility of Okemos. She was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of the late Dr. Haven T. and Eloise (Whittier) Paul.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth, N.H., Class of 1938, and Wheelock College in Boston, Class of 1941. She was a teacher at Lafayette School in Portsmouth, N.H., and had been president of the parent-teacher association at the New Franklin School in Portsmouth.

In the 1950s, she became one of the first women in New Hampshire to have her own radio talk show, "Coffee Time with Priscilla," which aired on WHEB. She had been a fashion commentator for various organizations on the eastern seacoast. She owned and operated Coastal TV in Portsmouth and Dover. She also owned and operated Priscilla's Frocks and Fancies and Priscilla's Patio, both formerly of Portsmouth

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Portsmouth.

Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Jaye Hamilton and her husband Dr. John Jerome of Bath; and three grandchildren, Anna Priscilla Dematatis of Austin Texas, John Paul Jerome and Benjamin Travis Jerome, both of Bath. She was preceded in death by her son, Paul "Topper" Whittier Hamilton, and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth "Penny" (Mace) Hamilton.

She was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine. Memorials may be made to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility, Okemos.

 

Ruby Sayles Brya

Ruby Sayles Brya, born September 24, 1905 in Yorkshire, England. Died on September 27, 2000 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Eliza Hannah Bradbury Sayles and Charles William Sayles. Mrs. Brya came to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1907. The family settled on a farm near Laingsburg, Michigan. She graduated from Laingsburg High School and lived and worked in Grand Rapids, Michigan before her marriage to Victor F. Brya in 1927. Victor preceded her in death in 1976. Ruby was a well known proprietor of Brya Hardware in Laingsburg, Michigan for over 50 years. After the sale of the hardware store, she moved to Arcadia, California to live with her widowed sister Harriet Salter. In 1982, she and Harriet moved to North Carolina to live near her daughter and caregiver Mary Lou Hopp and her husband, Dale. Ruby was a well respected quilter and was active in quilt groups at the United Methodist Church in Arcadia, California, Matthews, North Carolina and Cary, North Carolina. Recently she was a resident of Eden Gardens Assisted Living In Mooresville, North Carolina. 

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Brya Hopp and her husband Dale H. Hopp and a son, Homer R. Montgomery and his wife Vera, seven grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brya was preceded in death by eleven siblings-John Sayles, Maude Payne, Annie Watson, William Sayles, Frederick Sayles, Harriet Salter, Marion Robinson, Harry Sayles, Philip Sayles, Charles Sayles and Alfred Sayles. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, October 2, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Visitation will be 2-9 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. J. Marlene Bentley will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests gifts to the First Congregational Church of Laingsburg, Michigan or the organ fund at Community in Christ Lutheran Church of Cornelius, North Carolina or the charity of your choice.
