James Smit | Helen K. Stump |
Louise D. Smith, retired health education teacher with Holt Public Schools, died Oct. 17, 2000 of natural causes at her home in Holt. Born in Kalamazoo Oct. 25, 1919, she graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing and married Franklin W. Smith, M.D. in 1942. Louise and her husband maintained a private practice in family medicine at the Hicks House in St. Johns, until Dr. Smith's untimely death in 1969. Louise completed her Master's in Public Education at Michigan State University and moved to Holt in 1971. Louise and Franklin had six children, Alan F. Smith of St Johns, Kirk W. Smith (Christel) of Fayetteville, N.C., Gordon P. Smith of Onekama, who preceded his mother in death in 1995, Sue Lynne Sipkovsky (Gary) of Mason, Dave Smith (Mary) of East Lansing, and Pete Smith (Kathy) also of Mason; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong Episcopalian, serving the Altar Guilds at St. John's Church in St. Johns, and at St. Michael's Church, in Lansing. She was a long-time supporter of numerous environmental and social causes and was a certified tutor of English for Asian-born MSU students. She was a devoted horticultural and maintained flowering gardens throughout her life. Memorials may be made in her name through St. Michael Episcopal Church, Fr. Geoffrey Boyer, Rector.
Victor M. Pete SloatVictor M. Pete Sloat died October 26, 2000 at the age of 83. He was born in Victor Township on December 14, 1916, the son of Alton and Lettie (Miller) Sloat and lived most of his life in Ovid. He was a dairy farmer, retired from Fisher Body in Lansing in 1978, was a member of U.A.W. Local #602 and the Ovid Masonic Lodge #127 F.&A.M. Pete married Jane Vanaerman in Flint on October 28, 1944 and she survives him. Also surviving are three sons, William (Anita) Sloat of Oden, MI Ricky (Betty) Sloat of Mecosta, MI, and Robert (Cynthia) Sloat of Beijing, China, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one sister, Shirley Watson of Ovid. He was preceded in death by one son, Benny D. in 1970, three brothers, and his parents. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, October 30, 2000 at the Houghton Chapel
of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Middlebury Cemetery with Rev. Robert
Prange officiating. Masonic services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Sunday evening. The family
will receive friends 12 Noon to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may
be made to Hospice of Clinton County. Max W. Fricke, 68, peacefully passed away at his home Oct. 20, 2000. He was born Oct. 21, 1931, to John and Anna (Toews) Fricke in Middleton. He was married to Beth Stoneman Nov. 9, 1952, sharing life's joys and sorrows for nearly 48 years. Their home was blessed with five daughters and two sons. He gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the First Baptist Church in Carson City. He remained faithful to the Lord. Dad was a lifetime farmer and owner/manager of Fricke Farm Service. He was a kind and generous man ready to share with others. His love for singing was an encouragement to him and his family. Those left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife, Beth; five daughters, Diane (Benny) Bennett of Middleton, Nancy (Duane) Trefil of Perrinton, Janet (Phillip) Hinkle of Haines City, Fla., Kathleen (James) Peters of Perrinton, and Elaine (Christopher) Larsen of Haines City, Fla.; son, James Fricke of Middleton; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond (Patricia) Fricke of Middleton, and two sisters, Vera (Mazel) Salisbury of Middleton, and Gladine (William) Ryan of Athens, Ohio; many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Fricke; parents; twin brother, Verle; brother, Marvin; and sister, Mae Boehs. Funeral services were held Oct. 23 at the First Baptist Church in Carson City with Pastor Jim Barrett officiating. Interment as at Hayes Road Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Dodge Funeral Home, Middleton. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Carson City. James SmitJames Smit died October 23, 2000 at the age of 77. He was born in Grand Rapids on August 26, 1923, the son of Jacob and Adrianna Smit and lived most of his life in the St. Johns area before moving to Columbus, OH in 1972 and returned to Lansing in 1992. He retired from Deutz Tractor Company in 1985 as a sales manager and previously worked for Massey Ferguson, was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp in World War II, and was a member of the First Congregational Church in St. Johns. James married Janet Miller in Hillsdale, MI on August 28, 1944 and she survives him. Also surviving are two sons, James (Linda) Smit of East Lansing and John (Cindy) Smit of Warren, OH, two granddaughters, Karri (Gene) Lambert of Bloomfield Hills and Jennifer (Joe) Anderson of Holland, two sisters, Jean Austin of Ovid and Anna Heimstra of Grand Rapids, one brother, Robert (Maxine) Smit of St. Johns, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Louie Smit and three sisters, Dena Northhouse, Nettie Gray, and Leona White. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 27, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, with Rev. Matt Olson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
Betty J. ShawBetty J. Shaw died October 26, 2000 at the age of 73. Born in St. Johns, MI on December 14, 1926 the daughter of William and Edna (Hecht) Althouse. She was a homemaker and enjoyed square dancing and being a 4H leader with her husband. Betty married William Shaw, Jr. on June 19, 1945 and he survives her. Also surviving are three daughters, Judith Hoard of Fenwick, Linda Huber of Lansing, and Pamela (Robert) Zeilinger of Gaylord, seven grandchildren, Scott Hoard, Shelly Hoard, Stacy Reeder, James (Sarah) Zeilinger, David Zeilinger, Michael Zeilinger, and Sean Huber, and two great grandchildren, Ryan Reeder and Madeline Zeilinger. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her son, William Arthur Shaw and her brother, Arthur Althouse. Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 28, 2000 at Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, with Rev. Ried Martin officiating. The family will receive friends Noon-9 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Carson City. Crystal P. MooreCrystal P. Moore died October 23, 2000 at the age of 91. Born in Fulton Township, Michigan April 5, 1909, she was the daughter of Frederick and Linnie (First) Teachworth. She was a laborer at Redman's in Owosso and Ithaca and lived most of her life in Gratiot County. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge in Pompeii. She is survived by three daughters, Margaret (Keith) Slepr of rural St. Johns, Ruth (Walter) Smith of Ashley and Diana (Richard) Barrett of St. Johns, one son Richard (Wilma) Moore of Maple Rapids, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, daughter-in-law Wenda (Moore) Duflo of rural Ashley, and sister Maurice Casler of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by her husband Leon C. Moore, two sons, Leon, Jr. and Chancey, two grandchidlren Dennis and Ricky Moore, one great grandchild Jennifer Slepr, four brothers and two sisters. Private graveside services will be held at Fulton Center Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church. Helen K. StumpHelen K. Stump died Friday, October 20, 2000 at the age of 86. She was born in Fowler on March 25, 1914 the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Thelen) Koenigsknecht and lived most of her life in the Fowler area. She was a member of the Farm Bureau,Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters and Past Regent of the Daughters of Isabella. Helen married Henry J. Stump on August 29,1939 and he preceded her in death on August 22, 1987. Surviving is one daughter Martha (Bernard) Simon of Westphalia, three sons, Carl (Shirley) Stump of St. Johns, Jerry (Helen) Stump of Owosso, Hilary (Joy) Stump of Fowler, thirteen grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, four sisters Louise (Jerry) Burns of Hubbardston, Rose Smith of Jackson, Susan Stump of Pewamo, Agnes (Leon) Keilen of Westphalia, seven brothers, Rev. Fr. William J. Koenigsknecht of Grand Ledge, Benno (Laura) Koenigsknecht of Jackson, Nicholas (Marge) Koenigsknecht of St. Johns, Frank (Joan) Koenigsknecht of Pentwater, Mark (Mary Elizabeth) Koenigsknecht ,Roman (Mary Ann) Koenigsknecht, John (Carolyn) Koenigsknecht all of Fowler, sisters-in-law, Agnes Stump of Grand Ledge, Antoinette Koenigsknecht and Loretta Rademacher both of Fowler. She also was preceded in death by one sister Martha and two brothers Leo and Arnold. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher and Rev. Fr. Bill Koenigsknecht concelebrating. A rosary will be prayed at 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Sunday and 3:00 P.M. Monday and a vigil service will be at 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes. Dennis Eugene Vanek Sr., of DeWitt passed away Oct. 23, 2000 after a short illness. He was born May 13, 1935. He was employed by F&J/Walters Vending for over 43 years. Denny was a 44-year member and an elder at North Presbyterian Church. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Judy; two sons and their wives, Dennis Jr. and Tammy, David and Paula; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Doug Powers; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, JoAnn (Clayton) Croy, Marilyn (Bernard) Terwillger and Kenneth (Mickey) Vanek; three sisters-in-law, Julianne Hebert, Janice Lowe and Lois Brooks; and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret Vanek, and sister-in-law, Jackie Johns. The witness to the resurrection service for Denny was held Oct. 26, at North Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John V. Folkers officiating. Interment was at Wacousta Cemetery, with military service provided by the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to the church. Arrangements were by Gorsline-Runciman Co., DeWitt. |
