Robert G. Sherwood, Sr.Robert G. Sherwood, Sr. died November 8, 2000 at the age of 75. Born September 17, 1925 in Clinton County the son of Samuel and Nellie (Sperry) Sherwood. He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local #324 and a retired hog farmer. Bob was also a member of Perry V.F.W. and Laingsburg American Legion having served in WWII. He is survived by his special friend of 31 years, Virginia Peterman of Lansing, daughters, Gayle Sherwood of Lansing and Susan (friend- Micheal Moldonado) Bashore of Lansing, sons, Dale Sherwood of Lansing, Timothy (friend-Mary Sablain) Sherwood of Lansing, and Robert (Joyce) Sherwood, Jr. of St. Johns, six grandchildren, one sister, Jane (Jerry) Wilson of New Lothrop, and two brothers, Jerry (Rhonda) Sherwood of St. Johns and Walter (Leona) Sherwood of Lansing. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his infant children, R.G. and Peggy Jo Sherwood. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 11, 2000 at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County. Alton E. Homer, 86, of DeWitt Township, died Nov. 6, 2000. He was born March 8, 1914, in Midland County. Mr. Homer was formerly employed with Story Oldsmobile, drove bus for the Bath School system, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Florence, and a brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Eva Homer. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Harkins-Homer; one daughter, Barbara (Lisle) Hunter of Florida; two sons, Don (Wilma) Homer of Bath and Keith Homer of Grand Ledge; four step-children, Betty (Ray) McKrill of Florida, Barbara (Alvin) VanOss and Joe (Carolyn) Harkins both of Lansing, and Dale (Barbara) Harkins of East Lansing; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma March of Weidman; and three brothers, Richard (Fran) Homer of DeWitt, Robert (Jean) Homer of Lansing, and Edward (Muriel) Homer of Ohio. Funeral services were held Nov. 9, at the Gorsline Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, with Pastor Leon Hebrink of the First Baptist Church of Lansing officiating. Interment was at Rose Cemetery, Bath. King, 64, of Bath, died Nov. 9, 2000. He was born Oct. 31, 1936 in Saginaw. Mr. King graduated in 1954 from Saginaw High School, and served three years in the U.S. Army. He is the Bath Township treasurer, having served for 16 years. He was the previous owner of Tom King Oil Company. Mr. King was a member of the American Legion Post #412, Bath, for 27 years, and was also a member of the Clinton County Sewer Authority. Surviving are Marlene A. Brooks, his wife of 45 years; one daughter, Patricia (Chris) Perry of DeWitt; one son, Lawrence King (Christy Ryan) of Bath; seven grandchildren, Autumn and Katie King, Adam Bragdon, Lawrence King II, Aaron and Christopher Bragdon, and Alana Perry; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Alfred (Helen) King of Portage and William (Renee) King of Saginaw. The funeral service will be held at noon, Monday, Nov. 13, at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., DeWitt Chapel, DeWitt. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath, with military graveside services provided by the American Legion Post #412, Bath. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday. Jamie L. Beher, 16, of Lansing, died Nov. 5, 2000. She was born May 4, 1984 in Lansing. Jamie was a sophomore at DeWitt High School and was a Junior Varsity Cheerleader for the Panthers. She was a loving daughter to her parents, James and Carol Beher of Lansing and Penny and Ron Weeks of Chelsea. Also surviving are one brother, Chad; six sisters, Krista, Stacy, Michelle, Andrea, Jennifer, and Chelsea; grandparents. Dr. William T. (Margaret) Beher, Gale (Shirley) Coy, and James E. (Deb) Weeks; great-grandparents, Ione Williams and Omera Weeks; nine uncles, four aunts, nine cousins, three nieces, two nephews; her boyfriend, Al Fortino; and The 7SW's. The funeral service was held Nov. 10 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, Lansing, with the Rev. Danny Stoneham officiating. Interment was at DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt. Michigan Ave., PO Box 30480, Lansing, Mich., 48909-7980. James Coffey Matthews, Gentleman Jim, a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Oct. 14, 2000. He was born March 13, 1921 in Owosso. He spent his youth in nearby St. Johns, later attending Michigan State and graduating from Albion College in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with distinction in the Pacific Theater, receiving honorable discharge in 1945. After the war, Jim returned home to St. Johns where he married Jean Crowell, for whom he was a loving husband until she preceded him in death in 1994. Upon his return to St. Johns, he took over management of Matthews Ice Cream from his father, Joseph Matthews and operated the family business successfully until its sale in 1965. After the sale of the business, Jim and Jean moved their family to Arizona. Jim spent the majority his career in Arizona as a real estate broker in the Carefree/Cave Creek area, most recently with Gail Wilson Realty. Throughout his life Jim was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid and skillful golfer, playing and winning many amateur tournaments. He was a past president of the St. Johns Rotary Club, a past president of the Carefree Board of Realtors and a past member of the Carefree Kiwanis. Jim was a wonderfully warm and loving father who served as an inspiration to his children throughout his life. He will be remembered warmly and will be deeply missed by children, grandchildren and his many friends. He is survived by his son, Todd Matthews; his daughters, Cathy Clifton and Melissa Matthews; five grandchildren Meghan, Danika, Kelsey and Logan Matthews and Morgan Milmore; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Matthews; sons-in-law, Richard Hyman and Roland Milmore. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation at the funeral home will be Monday 7-9 and Tuesday 2-9, with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m. Rosary will be prayed Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Anna was born in Czechoslovakia on October 18, 1910, the daughter of Frank & Ann (Knaybel) Chvojka. Anna married Joseph Chapko at St. Cyrils Catholic Church in Bannister on April 16, 1932. Joe died September 27, 1982. She was a homemaker and resided most of her life in the Ashley area. Anna was a member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church in Bannister, Michigan, and was also a member of the Altar Society. Survivors include two daughters; Dorothy & Keith Rosekrans of St. Johns, and Nancy & Leo Decker of Florida, ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, five sisters, Rosie Andrews of Ovid, Margaret Snyder of Wheeler, Jean Housbeck of Alpena, Mary Levondski of Ravenna, and Helen Juricak of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, one brother Steve Chojka of Breckenridge, and many nieces and nephews. Anna was predeceased by her parents, one granddaughter, Pam, one sister and five brothers. Young died November 7, 2000 at the age of 91. She was born in Clinton County on May 6, 1909, the daughter of Glen and Pearl (Bailey) Lowe and lived most of her life in Ovid. She was a homemaker and was a 1928 graduate of Ovid High School. Myrtle married Fred Decker on September 16, 1928, later she married Lester Young in Angola, IN on October 28, 1950 and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Ilene Schwark and Dorine Lacina, both of Ovid, nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Joanne Decker of Laingsburg, sister, Berma Seelhoff of Elsie, and sister-in-law, Thelma Olson of Minnesota. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Glenn Decker and one grandson, Randy Shivley. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 9, 2000 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Scott Seelhoff officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Donald G. CooperDonald G. Cooper died November 5, 2000 at the age of 83. He was born in St. Johns on February 13, 1917, the son of George and Cora (Parks) Cooper and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He was a mechanic at Smittys Buick Garage for many years. Donald married Dorothy Rademacher in Angola, IN in June 1938 and she survives him. Also surviving are one son, Donald R. Cooper of St. Johns. There will be no visitation or services. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home. Melvin F. WeberMelvin F. Weber died November 5, 2000 at the age of 78. He was born in Fowler on May 10, 1922, the son of Peter and Anna (Goerge) Weber and lived in St. Johns for the last 52 years. He was a farmer and retired from Federal Mogul in 1978, a veteran of World War II, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4113. Melvin married Ilene Ordiway in Fowler on September 27, 1948 and she survives him. Also surviving are four sons, Richard (Virginia) Weber of DeWitt, Wayne (Delores) Weber, Leo (Fran) Weber, and James Weber, all of St. Johns, one daughter, Darlene Roberts of St. Johns, twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, five step grandchildren, two sisters, Leona Bauer of St. Johns and Angela Thelen of Fowler, two brothers, Urban (Marie) Weber of Fowler and Harold Weber of Ionia, and sister-in-law, Edna Weber of Portland. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Norman and Raymond Weber. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2000 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Seavey died November 3, 2000 at the age of 42. He was born in East Detroit, MI on July 22, 1958, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Sullivan) Seavey and lived in Taylor for the last ten years coming from St. Johns. He worked for the Wayne County Road Commission and was a graduate of St. Johns High School. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Seavey of Lincoln Park, MI, mother, Margaret Seavey of St. Johns, four brothers, Thomas (Suzanne) Seavey of CA, Joe (Eleanor) Seavey of Zeeland, Stan (Jeanette) Seavey of Grand Blanc, and Leo (Kathie) Seavey of AZ, and two sisters, Jean Simon of St. Johns and Erin (Jeff) Penney of Fairfield, CT. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Seavey, on May 6, 2000. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2000 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt.
