Joseph “Joey” Miller

Joseph “Joey” Miller died November 17, 2000 at the age of 67. He was born in Fowler on October 10, 1933, the son of Ferdinand and Rose (Heiler) Miller and lived most of his life in Olive Township. Joey was a farmer and retired from General Motors after 34 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, enjoyed farming, gardening, his grandchildren, and playing cards. Joey married Nancy Reed in St. Johns on January 18, 1958 and she survives him.  

Also surviving are seven children, Jay (Linda) Miller of St. Johns, Rose (John) Hoffman of Wyoming, MI, Marie (Larry) Ciolek, Elaine (Quinten) Boyd, all of St. Johns, Karen (Bill) McLean of Saline, MI, Rachel (Russ Strach) Miller of Portland, OR, and Jennifer (Greg) Thelen of Traverse City, ten grandchildren, one sister, Rita (Ronald) Cuthbert, two brothers, Charles (Annabel) Faivor and Leon (Phyllis) Miller, all of St. Johns, and sister-in-law, Helen Faivor of Detroit. He was preceded in death by infant son, Henry Miller, granddaughter, Lindsey Hoffman, and two brothers, Tom and John Faivor. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Tim D. Krzyzaniak officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday and Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a K of C Rosary at 6:00 P.M. Sunday and a Vigil service 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County or the American Cancer Society.

Lyle “Mearl” Snyder, Jr.

Lyle “Mearl” Snyder, Jr. died November 17, 2000 at the age of 66. He was born in Crystal, MI on September 21, 1934, the son of Lyle and Harriet (Weaver) Snyder and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He retired as a fork lift operator from General Motors, was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Michigan Trapper’s Association, the N.R.A., and Sleepy Hollow Conservation Club and was an avid sportsman. Mearl married Dottie Brewster in Wichita, Kansas on March 17, 1957 and she preceded him in death on September 30, 1997. 

Surviving are five daughters, Denise (Frank) Marecek of Middleton, Teresa (Gary) Bast of St. Johns, Stephanie (Jerry) Hale of Harrison, Kathy (George) Spade of Perrinton, and Danelle (fiancée Jeff Mulder) Snyder of Ovid, one son, Barr (Yvonne) Snyder of Pompeii, eighteen grandchildren, three brothers, Ray (Elaine) Snyder of Tyler, TX, Ralph (Frances) Snyder of Sheridan, MI, and Gary (Pam) Snyder of Maple Rapids, one sister, Joan Tucker of Climax, MI, and stepmother, Opal Snyder of Carson City. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rocky Snyder. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, November 20, 2000 at Salem United Methodist Church, burial at Union Home Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church.

Mary E. Harte

Mary E. "Betty" Harte of Bath passed away Nov. 7, 2000. Born July 18, 1922 in St. Johns, Mrs. Harte, along with her husband, Gareth, started "Grandparents Against Child Abuse". She served as a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader, and had been on the first all girl softball team on the state of Michigan for 4-H. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA), Delta Alpa Chapter since 1966, Perry Rebekah Lodge since 1943, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and the Lansing R.E.A.C.T team.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gareth M. Harte (1994), son, Robert Harte (1943), parents, five brothers and one sister.

Surviving are her daughter, Janeth K. Wildt (of Ceramics by George) of Bath; sons, Gareth G. (Gayle) of Lansing, Thomas L. of Bath and Laurence R. (Diane) of Lansing; 7 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; many foster children and their families; sister, Eva G. McBain of Oldtown, Fla., and dear friend, Ed Hutchings.

Funeral services were Nov. 11 at Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel with the Rev. Steve Weinberger, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Lansing, officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath.

Jacob VanDerCreek

Jacob VanDerCreek, 85, of Marion passed away Nov. 10, 2000 at the home of his son in St. Johns. He was born July 5, 1915 in Vogel Center to Jacob and Hattie (Brinks) VanDerCreek.

He married Bessie Lathrop. She preceded him in death in 1952. He later married Ruth Bowers in 1955.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed watching boxing and westerns on television.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth VanDerCreek of Freemont; children, Jessie (Carolynn) VanDeCreek of St. Johns, David Hall and Carol Hall of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jessie (Kimberly) VanDeCreek of Detroit, Lori (Gig) Collins of St. Johns, Courtney Davis of St. Johns; one great-grandchild, Madison Leslie VanDeCreek; brothers and sisters, Minnie Cook of Marion, Rose Anderson of Muskegon, Ben VanDeCreek of Wisconsin, and Henry VanDeCreek of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Joseph, John and Dick VanDeCreek, Mabel Emery, and an infant brother, Henry,

Services were held Nov. 13 at the Fosnaught Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Dennis Williams officiating. Burial was in Vogel Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Clinton Memorial Home Health, Hospice.

Jeanette A. Omahen

Jeanette A. Omahen, 82, of Delta Township passed away Nov. 4, 2000. She was born Sept. 29, 1918 in Fowler, the daughter of Frank A. and Rose (Thelen) Wieber.

She graduated from Fowler High School in 1936 and received a degree in nursing from St. Mary's College of Nursing in Grand Rapids. She worked at Owosso and St. Lawrence Hospital and was a U.S. Navy nurse serving during World War II. She was a member of St. Michael's parish in Grand Ledge. She enjoyed traveling, and her family was the center of her life.

She is survived by husband, John; daughters, Pattie (Bill) Moock and Kathleen Clark of San Diego, Calif., Janice (Dave) Coon of Delta Township, Joan (Don) Berkowitz of Spokane, Wash.; son, Charles (Christine) of New York; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Rosalyn (Walter) Browns of Portage, Judith (Jesse) Castillo of Lansing, Therese (George) Weber and Joan (Charles) Simon of Fowler; three brothers, Giles (MaryAnn), Carl (Rita), and Leon (Geraldine), all of Fowler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Billy; twin infants, Anthony and Frank; and brother, Mark.

Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Robert McGraw of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pewamo. Arrangements were made by Hopkin-Atkins Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

Barbara M. Taft

Barbara M. Taft died Tuesday November 14, 2000 at the age of 70.  Barb was born on June 14, 1930 in Bridgeport, MI, the daughter of Harold and Loraine (Nass) Irish and graduated from Ovid High School in 1948.  On October 10, 1948 she married Robert Taft in Ovid and he survives her. Barb was a homemaker. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Barry (Judy) Taft of Waco, Texas and Alan Taft of Ovid, one daughter, Kristin (Louis) Oliveri of Westlake, Ohio, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brother, Keith (Shirley) Irish of Ovid, and sister, Phylis Straw of Leroy, MI. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday November 17, 2000 at the Houghton Chapel-Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of the donors choice.

Evaline Kuhns

Evaline J. Kuhns died November 13, 2000 at the age of 93. Born in Lansing, Michigan June 13, 1907, she was the daughter of Otto and Fannie (Baker) Marshall and lived most of her life in St. Johns.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church, Methodist Women's Society, life member of O.E.S. #79, and enjoyed bowling, ceramics and knitting.   She was a former Diamond Reo employee and a Deputy Register of Deeds of Clinton County for eight years.  On August 3, 1929 she married Lawrence Kuhns and he survives her. 

Also surviving are a daughter-in-law Ethel Kuhns, granddaughter Lisa (Jerry) Hollis all of St. Johns, a brother Carlos Marshall of Lansing, and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by one son Richard Kuhns.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 17, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Union Home Cemetery with Rev. Carol Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. 

Fern Burgess

Fern Burgess died November 13, 2000. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, Owosso with Rev. Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County.

Myrtle M. “Mert” Warren

Myrtle M. “Mert” Warren died November 13, 2000 at the age of 62. She was born in St. Johns on October 10, 1938, the daughter of Martin and Dorothy (Stewart) Bandt and lived in Maple Rapids most of her life. She retired as a dispatcher from the Physical Plant at M.S.U. in 1998 and was a 1957 graduate of Fulton High School. She enjoyed life and playing with her grandchildren. Mert married Gordon Warren in Maple Rapids on November 26, 1960. 

Surviving are two daughters, Jo Lynn (Mark) Strong of Ithaca and Janell (Jeff) Johnson of Perrinton and six grandsons, Alex, Landon, and Matthew Strong, Keaton, Kacey, and Kameron Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 16, 2000 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, burial at Lowe Cemetery with Rev. Carolyn Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Doris  E.  Abbott 

Doris  E.  Abbott died November 13, 2000 at the age of 99. Born in Essex Township on August 1, 1901, she was the daughter of John and Margaret (Moore) Taylor and lived in Essex Township all of her life.  She was a member of the Maple Rapids Congregational Church.  Doris married George Abbott on November 25, 1920 and he preceded her in death on April 20, 1977.  

She is survived by one daughter, Jean (Joseph) Gavenda, one son, George (Patricia) Abbott, all of Maple Rapids, 9 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren, and son-in-law, Frank Wakeman of Jackson.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Wakeman and Ruth Kekal, and three brothers, Earl, Glen and Albert Taylor.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, burial at Sowle Cemetery with Pastor Steven Lang officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-9 Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Building E, 950 28th St. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49508-1328.
 

Heather Renee Amante 

Heather Renee Amante died November 11, 2000 at the age of 24. She was born in Lansing on March 4, 1976, the daughter of Frederic and Sharon (Fleming) Amante and lived in St. Johns since 1988. Heather was a professional designer of board games and also an avid sports lover. Before she became ill at age 10, she swam, played football, soccer, and a little bit of baseball. She loved M.S.U. Spartans and Detroit Red Wings. She also loved all music and most enjoyed going to concerts and her CD’s. Heather had many friends and will be missed by all. Truth and trust were what she valued most. 

Surviving are her parents, Fred and Sharon Amante, five sisters, Ellen and Michael Harding of East Lansing, Shauna Amante, Karissa Amante, DeAndrea Amante, all of St. Johns, and Brenda Amante of Washington, three brothers, Edward and Sue Jensen of Lansing, Brian and Karla Jensen of Keego Harbor, MI, and Frederic Amante of Arizona, grandparents, Phyllis McCann of DeWitt and Ken and Roxie Fleming of Perry, three uncles, Patrick Amante of Lansing, Michael Amante of South Carolina,  and Dan Touleyrou of DeWitt, one aunt, Glory and Jim Stringham of Laingsburg, and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 16, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Stella L. Goodrich 

Stella L. Goodrich died November 9, 2000 at the age of 51. She was born in Pottstown, PA on September 25, 1949, the daughter of Edson and Jeannette (Nestley) Shumate and lived in Ovid since 1970. She was a Customer Service Manager at Wal-Mart and was a member of Duplain Church of Christ. Stella married Edwin Goodrich in Welcome, NC on September 30, 1967 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are one daughter, Diana Goodrich of Ovid, two sons, Daniel (Michelle) Goodrich and Andrew (Erica) Goodrich, all of St. Johns, two granddaughters, Amber Kathryn and Autumn Lee Goodrich, parents, Edson & Jeannette Shumate of PA, father-in-law, Oren Goodrich, one sister, Tammy (Tom) Denner of PA, and one brother, Mike (Sue) Shumate, of PA. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 13, 2000 at the Duplain Church of Christ, burial at Duplain Cemetery with Rev. Dan Cameron officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid. Memorials may be made to the Duplain Church of Christ or the American Red Cross.
