Age 79 of St. Johns, Michigan passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel, with Chaplain Terry Haneckow officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will be Tuesday morning 9:30 A.m. until the Time of Service.

He was born in Elsie, Michigan on August 22, 1921, the son of George W. and Theresa (Wodei) Brown. He attended rural schools in St. Johns and Elsie. On September 18, 1943 he married Ann Spess in St. Johns, Michigan. He was a farmer and resided on the farm for 57 years. He especially liked farming, and also welded, repaired & painted tools for himself and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Brown of St. Johns, MI, two daughters, Sandra Robinson of Japan, and Barb & Stan Helms of St. Johns, MI, one son, James & Sue Brown of St. Johns, MI, five grandsons, Eric & Ryan Brown of St. Johns, MI, Robert & Benjamin Helms of St. Johns, MI, Nathan Robinson of Zeeland, one sister-in-law, Marie Plaza of St. Johns, MI, one brother-in-law, Steve Spess of Saginaw, MI and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, one sister, and one brother

Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital or American Heart Association.

Tom worked for State Employees Credit Union in Lansing, Michigan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 29, 2000 at 11:00 A.m. at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister with Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday 11:00 A.m. to 9:00 P.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel, with a Rosary prayed at 7:00 P.m.

He was born in St. Johns, Michigan on January 21, 1949, the son of William Louis & Helen Katherine (Korienek) Nemcik. He graduated from Rodney B. High School in St. Johns with the Class of 1967. He was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister and a member of St. Johns Lions Club. He resided most of his life in Elsie and St. Johns, Michigan.

Survivors include one daughter; Rachel Nemcik of St. Johns, three step-daughters, Sarah, Melissa, & Nikki Witt of St. Johns, six sisters, Dorothy Denovich of Bannister, Helen & Jerry Bast of St. Johns, Elaine Rademacher of St. Johns, Darlene Bashore of Lansing, Theresa & Jim Ginther of Bannister, and Jeanette & Al Havens of St. Johns, two brothers, Jim N. & Judy Nemcik of Elsie, and William J. & Clara Nemcik of Elsie, also many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

Memorials may be made to Foundation for Excellence Program in the St. Johns Public Schools.

Joan C. Simon

Joan C. Simon died December 27, 2000 at the age of 67. She was born in St. Johns on November 9, 1933, the daughter of Frank and Rosa (Thelen) Wieber and lived in Fowler most of her life. She was an elementary school teacher and a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Joan married Charles Simon in Fowler on October 10, 1970 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are two sons, Anthony Simon of Midland and Matthew (Kristin) Simon of Kalamazoo, one granddaughter, Kathryn Simon of Kalamazoo, three sisters, Rosalyn Brown of Portage, Therese (George) Weber of Fowler, and Judith (Jesse) Castillo of Lansing, and two brothers, Carl (Rita) Wieber and Leon (Geraldine) Wieber, all of Fowler. She was preceded in death by one sister, Jeannette Omahen and two brothers, Mark Wieber and Giles Wieber.  

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 30, 2000 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the St. Johns Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed at 8 P.M., and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Friday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, with a rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Clinton Memorial Home Care & Hospice Services, or Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust Fund. 

Mildred Ruth Harmon

Mildred Ruth Harmon died December 26, 2000 at the age of 75. She was born in Coldwater on September 6, 1925, the daughter of Albert and Edith (Wheeler) Dovey. She graduated from Coldwater High School in 1943 and attended Michigan State University, was employed by Johnson’s Clothing Store, Montgomery Ward’s and Hodgeman Abstract Office, and was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Mildred is survived by her husband of 49 years, Kenneth Harmon, whom she married in Coldwater on July 4, 1951. 

Also surviving are eleven children, David (Jill) Harmon of Caseville, MI, Sharon (Alan) Smith of St. Johns, Linda (Dale) Pung of DeWitt, Kent (Denise) Harmon of Troy, Richard Harmon of Portland, Barbara (Brian) Wieber of Westphalia, Susan (Julius) Motz of Fowler, James (Mary) Harmon of Lino Lake, MN, Kathleen (Ken) Farley of Fowler, Lorraine (Chad) Bedaine of Fowler, and Julie (Dan) Martin of Westphalia, grandchildren, Travis Funk, Nicole and Erika Smith, Victoria Pung, Tommy and Matthew Harmon, Ryan Harmon, Ashley, Jeffrey and Emily Wieber, Julie, Becky, Amanda, Chiristie, Lisa and Andrea Motz, Sammy Harmon, Kenny, Jacob and Nicholas Farley, Trevor Thelen, Priscilla Slabbinck, MacKenzee, Daniel, Jackson, and Kennedy Martin, and Ember Bedaine, sister-in-law, June Harmon of Sanford, MI, brother-in-law, H.B. “Smokey” Harmon of Fresno, CA, and many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen, her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Eva Dovey, sister, Elizabeth Dovey, brother-in-law, Harold “Doc” Harmon, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nowicki. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 29, 2000 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. The family will receive friends 6-9 P.M. Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with a rosary prayed 8 P.M. Wednesday and 3 P.M. Thursday and a vigil service 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Jenna Rose Thelen

Jenna Rose Thelen, infant, went to be with the Lord December 21, 2000. She was born in Lansing, the daughter of Jeffry and Patricia (Hengesbach) Thelen. 

Surviving are her parents, grandparents, Ken and Jan Thelen of St. Johns and Charles and Janet Hengesbach of Westphalia, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

Services have been held. Arrangements by the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler. 

Lloyd William Nichols

nichols.jpg (11617 bytes)  Lloyd William Nichols age 91 of St.Johns died Saturday morning, December 23, 2000 at his home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Timothy Cockroft of the St. Johns Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Visitation will   be Tuesday from 2-9 with family present 2-4 & 7-9 and Wednesday 9:30 A.m. until the time of service. Lloyd was born in Bengal Township, Clinton County,January 26, 1909, the oldest son of Frank  Seymore & Beatrice Helen ( Longcor) Nichols. He attended DeWittHigh School & St. Johns High School.

He lived in Riley Township, Clinton County most of his life.On July 27, 1933, at the home of Rev. Northrup, in St. Johns, Lloyd married Doris Marie Stevens.Lloyd operated a farm on Lowell Road, Riley Township, for over 30 years and was working at Olfoson’s when he retired in 1971. He enjoyed a very rich and full life. He served as Justice of the Peace in Riley Township and was also Master of the Grange.

Lloyd and Doris raised a family of five children on theirfarm, his survivors include; his wife, Doris Marie of St. Johns, three daughters, Verna & Roger Thurston of St. Johns, Wilma Barnhart of Houghton Lake, Janet & Karlis Dakers of Higgins Lake, two sons, Gerald & Vernie Nichols of DeWitt, Lyle & Beverly Nichols of DeWitt, as well as 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Theresa Nichols, Leta Nichols, and Onalee Guyer, a brother Mahlon & Lois Nichols and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, one grandson Robert Smith, His son-in-law Raymond Barnhart, his brother Donald Nichols, and two sisters Elizabeth Farrier and Beatrice O’Dell. Memorials can be made to Clinton County Hospice. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.
