Olga A. ShoemakerOlga A. Shoemaker, 86, of DeWitt, passed away Jan. 2, 2001. She was born Aug. 12, 1914 in Lansing. Mrs. Shoemaker loved gardening and porcelain doll making. Olga and her husband, Paul, were foster parents to several children. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Olga was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, JoAnn McGuire. Surviving are two daughters, Della Jones of DeWitt and Linda (Earl) Wiggins of Newport; one son, LeRoy (Donna) Shoemaker of Flint; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Donaldson of Lansing, and Josephine (Sam) Willoughby and Anne Striver, both of Charlotte. Funeral services were Jan. 5 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel. AndrewsAge 72 of Laingsburg passed away Friday, December 29, 2000 in Laingsburg.Lloyd was a foreman at Oldsmobile in Lansing, retiring in 1979. Family and friends will be gathering for a Time of Remembrance on Thursday, January 4, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at the Banquet Hall at the St. Isidore Catholic Church in Laingsburg, Michigan. Rev. Lloyd Williams, a grandson of Mr. Andrews will officiate. There will be no public visitation. He was born on September 17, 1928 in Sumner Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, the son of Otis and Elsie (Markham) Andrews. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Laingsburg Fire Department, the Laingsburg Lions Club, and also the Laingsburg Planning Commission. He resided most of his life in Laingsburg. Survivors include a Special Friend, Gerry Coleman of Laingsburg, MI, four children, Ron (Mary) Andrews of Laingsburg, MI, Jean (Dell) Austin of Laingsburg, MI, Shirley (Phil) Marshall of Laingsburg, MI, and Robert (Betty) Taylor of Boyne City, MI, thirteen grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren, and five sisters, Frieda, Wava, Doris, Pat, and Janice. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Otis; and a great grandson. Memorials are suggested to the family. The Family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Terry R. BurnsTerry R. Burns died January 3, 2001 at the age of 47. He was born in St. Johns on December 28, 1953, the son of Robert N. and Beatrice E. (Welhusen) Burns. Terry attended Ovid-Elsie High School, was employed by Lear Corporation and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Surviving are one daughter, Kimberly (Kevin) White of Missouri, five sons, Robert A. Burns of St. Johns, T.J. (Cheryl) Burns, John Burns, Chris Burns, all of Missouri, and Michael Burns of Ovid, four grandchildren, his father, Robert N. Burns of Ovid, two sisters, Nancy (Joe) Jorae and Joann (Robert) Driscoll, all of Ovid, and one brother, John (Virginia) Holley of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Judith K. Burns. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 6, 2001 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Virginia May Carroll (Chamberlain) SchraderBorn November 7, 1920 to Charles Wesley Carroll and Bernice Eleanor Goodrich Carroll in Middlebury Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. She was co-valedictorian of Ovid High School Class of 1938. Her education continued at the Universities of Michigan State, Michigan Tech, University of Hawaii, Oregon State, and the University of Michigan. She received a B.S. degree from Michigan State College in 1945; Fifth Year Certificate in Home Economics from the University of Hawaii in 1961; M.A. degree, 1967, and Ph.D. degree in Secondary Education from Michigan State University in 1971. In 1980, she received the Specialist in Aging Certificate from the Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan. Virginia married Lieutenant Kenneth R. Chamberlain, Aviator, USMC, 27 August 1941. Lieutenant Colonel Chamberlain preceded her in death 10 January 1967. She married Colonel John R. Schrader on 30 June 1973. Colonel Schrader preceded her in death 26 January 2000. After teaching mathematics and science in Havelock, North Carolina and Home Economics in Hawaii, she taught earth and environmental science at Ovid-Elsie High School, Elsie, Michigan from 1962-1978. She received 3 National Science Foundation Grants; published science teaching units in Educators Guide to Science Materials, Educators Progress Service, Inc., Randolph, Wisconsin. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an education honory society. She was a life member of the Michigan Education Association and the National Education Association. After retirement from public school teaching, she continued her teaching career by teaching psychology of Aging in the Nursing School, Community College, Bradenton, Florida from 1981-1986. In 1985, she was the catalyst in establishing Hospice of Manatee Co., Bradenton, Florida, serving as its first president. She merged Hospice of Manatee Co. with Hospice of Sarasota Co., which became Hospice of Southwest Florida. Dr. Schrader was the first member of the Board of Trustee from Manatee County to serve on the Hospice Board. For this accomplishment she received the Patrick Henry Medallion for patriotic achievement from the Military Order of the World Wars and the Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active in preparing her family genealogy and belonged to Society of Mayflower Descendants; Descendants of the Signers of the Constitution; Regent, Manatee Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; President, William Bassett Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century. In 1993, she was given the Genealogy Award Certificate for original research by the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. She was active in the support of Manatee Symphony, Bradenton, Florida; President of Ladies of the Ribbon, Bradenton, Florida; an associate member of West Bradenton Baptist Church; and member of the First Baptist Church, Ovid, Michigan. Dr. Schrader is survived by her two daughters: Carroll G. Odhner (John), Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania; Deborah L. Smith (Bruce), Mears, Michigan; two sons: Dr. Kenneth R. Chamberlain (Shelley), Chelsea, Michigan; Mark S. Chamberlain, Washington, D.C.; two step sons; one step daughter; 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; two sisters: Iva Keel, Ovid, Michigan; Mary and Wendall McCreery, Owosso, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard D. Chamberlain, three brothers, Clare, Charles, and Claude Carroll, and two sisters, Grace and Ora Carroll. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 6, 2001 at the First Baptist Church, Ovid, Michigan with Rev. Dennis Boonstra officiating. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Friday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, Michigan. Burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Memorials may be made to Hospice or the First Baptist Church, Ovid. Rita Kaye AlvordRita Kaye Alvord, died January 1, 2001 at the age of 51. Born in Bingham Township, Michigan on February 16, 1949, she was the daughter of Gerald E. and Nora M. (Fleming) Spayde. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ovid. Mrs. Alvord has been working for Maurell Products for the past 2 years. Ritas marriage of 31 years to Gary Alvord on May 28, 1969 ended with her death. She is survived by one son, Eric Alvord of Oakley, one daughter, Candi Alvord of Lansing, her parents, Gerald and Nora Spayde of Ovid, father-in-law, Don Alvord of Prudenville, sister-in-law, Monica Stechschulte of Dayton, Ohio. Ovid. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ingham County. Annie Molly GillespieAnnie Molly Gillespie, died December 31, 2000 at the age of 76. Born in Henderson, Michigan on July 1, 1924, she was the daughter of Rudy and Mary (Telpy) Paseka. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, and listening to polka music. Mrs. Gillespie loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by four sons: Ronald Gillespie, Kerry Gillespie (Gloria) all of St. Johns, Al Gillespie (Mary Ann) of Elsie, Glen Gillespie (Lori) of Thompsonville, Michigan, one daughter Roseyln Oliver of Lima, Ohio, 16 grandchildren, 16 great Grandchildren, two brothers, Frank Paseka (Celah) of Tacoma, Washington and Jack Paseka (Thelma) of San Diego, California, two sisters, Helen Mitosinka and Emma Salters (Clare) both from St. Johns. In addition to her husband Phillip Mutt Gillespie and parents, Annie was preceded in death by her five brothers, Rudy (Ralph) Paseka, Phil, Joe, Victor and Archie Paseka. The family will receive friends 4 8 PM Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital or Kidney Foundation. Eldred H. WatersEldred H. Waters, died December 29, 2000 at the ageof 90. Born in Chapin, Michigan on April 22, 1910, he was the son of William A. and Ada M. (Capen) Waters. He was a Boy Scout Leader as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Elsie. Mr. Waters retired after working 30+ years as a electrician. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Ruff (Jim) of St. Johns, sister, Evelyn Ferguson (Gerald) of Elsie, son-in-law, Ron Gasper of Chesaning, 9 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Vivian Waters and his parents, Eldred was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly Gasper. Private services were held.
