Bernice C. Jorae, 84, of Traverse City and formerly of Laingsburg, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at her home.

      She was born on Feb. 24, 1916, in Victor Township, the daughter of Arthur and Mable (Wert) Plunkett. She graduated from Laingsburg High School as a member of the class of 1934. On Sept. 17, 1940, in Laingsburg, she married Eugene Theodore Jorae. He predeceased her in 1989.

      She worked for St. Johns Courthouse and also R.L. Polk Co. in Traverse City. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Traverse City.

      She is survived by her children, Brother Anthony Jorae of River Grove, Ill., Gail Jorae, Mary Jorae and Rita (Richard) Engardio, all of Lansing, Ruth (Charles) Babcock of Sterling Heights, Pat (Carol) Jorae of Traverse City, Michael Jorae of Traverse City, John Jorae of Buckley, Dennis Jorae of Goleta, Calif., Edna Martin of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Jane (Mark) Hilden of Los Osos, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

      Besides her husband, Eugene, she also was preceded in death by two daughters, Gloria and Margaret; one brother, Lewis Plunkett; and two sisters, Beatrice Ackley and Edna Hurst.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Laingsburg, where a rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m.

      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Isidore Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Duaine H. Pamment officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.      Memorials may be directed to the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan, 1609 Park Dr., Traverse City, MI 49686. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, McDougall Chapel, in Laingsburg.

Dorothy M. Nurenberg

Dorothy M. Nurenberg, 91, of Westphalia died Dec. 25, 2000, at Ovid Healthcare Center where she had been a resident for nearly two years.

She was born in the Westphalia area Sept. 8, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Martin) Spitzley. Mrs. Nurenberg was a homemaker and her greatest joy was her children and their families. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She married Arnold Nurenberg June 8, 1932, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Arnold; sons, Jerry (Jan) and LeRoy (Carol) Nurenberg of Westphalia; daughters, Germaine Theis of Westphalia, Mary K. "Katie" (Ted) Good of Ludington, Joann (Phil) Simon of Fowler, Genie (Paul) Pung of St. Johns, and Arlene (Jim) Thelen of Portland; 33 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Estelle Shafer of Lansing; brother, Dick Spitzley of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters-in-law, Katherine Spitzley of Ionia, Alvina Nurenberg, Laurine (Ed) Schueller, and Esther (Sylvester) Thelen, all of Westphalia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marie Wrocklage; brothers, Jim and Pat Spitzley; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Jerry Theis and Jerry Pung.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church by the Rev. William Ashbaugh. Rite of Committal followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Contributions may be made to the Fr. Al Miller Trust Fund.

daniel.jpg (13064 bytes)Age 88 of Ovid died Thursday, January 4, 2001 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid, Michigan. George farmed and worked for Clark Engineering.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 8, 2001 at 10 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid. Rev. Fr. Paul Cummings will officiate and burial will be in South Ovid Cemetery, Ovid, MI. Visitation is Saturday 6-8 and Sunday 3:30 to 8 P.M. Scripture services will be Sunday evening at 7:00 P.M.

He was born in Shiawassee County, Michigan on March 3, 1912 the son of George J. and Francisco (Hendrich) Daniel. On January 20, 1940 he married Lois Cross in Owosso, Michigan. He enjoyed fishing and repairing houses and reselling them. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid.

Survivors include, his wife Lois Daniel of Ovid, 1 daughter, Veronica and Donald Skutt of Rosebush, 3 sons, John & Jean Daniel of Ovid, George Daniel of Lansing, Charles & Pam Daniel of Decatur, IL, 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, 1 sister Cecilia Glasovatz of Lansing, MI. His parents, one sister and two brothers predeceased him. Memorials can be made to Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, MI. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel

Merrill A. Wilson

Merrill A. Wilson, 88, of Bath, passed away Jan. 8, 2001. He was born Feb. 14, 1912 in Newberry.

He was previously employed with Smith Tree and Landscape Company for 25 years, and had a great love for the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Wilson; three daughters, Edith (Richard) Parker of Garden City, Barbara Willard and Larry Gordon of Barrington, and Shirley (Don) Fuller of Bath; three sons, Dale (Brenda) Wilson of Six Lakes, Charles (Anna) Wilson of Big Rapids, and Merrill (Maureen) Wilson Jr. of Perry; four step-children, Mary (Rick) Sieman and Betty (Russ) Williams of Mason and William (Dinese) Overdink and Richard Overdink of Lansing; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Leonard "Ray" Wilson, and two wives, Velma Thomas and Jenney Palm.

Funeral services were Jan. 11 at Gorsline-Runciman Co., DeWitt Chapel. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing, with military graveside services provided by the VFW Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671, DeWitt.

Christine Kremer

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 7, 2001 at 2:00 P.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, with Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday evening 7-9 and Saturday 2-8 with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.m.

She was born in Flat River, Missouri on October 27, 1912, the daughter of Emery & Anna (Cherep) Decker. She married LeRoy Decker in 1930, he passed away in 1953. She than married Ed Kremer in 1954, he passed away in 1999. She moved to Elsie in 1935 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Elsie United Methodist Women, Esther Circle, and the Elsie Literary Club.

Survivors include two sons, LeRoy & Betty Decker of Fenton, MI, and R.G. Decker of Davidson, MI, two granddaughters, Debra & Ed Coleman of Holly, MI, Mickki Decker of Detroit, MI, two grandsons, Darby & Julie Decker of Tawas, MI, Drew & Karen Decker of Tawas, MI, nine great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and four sisters, Verna Dailey of Elsie, MI, Irene Sheredy of Clare, MI, Margaret Serviss of Harrison, MI, and Anna Luce of Mt. Pleasant, MI. She was predeceased by her parents, one sister Theresa, and one great-great grandson, Alex. Memorials may be made Elsie United Methodist Church.
