Floyd L. SpieceFloyd L. Spiece died January 18, 2001 at the age of 72. He was born in Gratiot County on August 14, 1928, the son of Floyd and Lucille (Strouse) Spiece and lived in St. Johns most of his life. He retired from General Motors after 34 years of service, was a member of V.F.W. Post #4113 in St. Johns, enjoyed farming, traveling to Florida, camping and classic cars. Floyd married Mary Lou (Hubbard) in Eureka on May 11, 1968 and she survives him. Also surviving are two sons, John (Deb) Spiece of Charlotte and Rick Spiece of Quincy, step son, Randy Witt of St. Johns, seven grandchildren, and three sisters, Doris Secord of St. Johns, Alice Gavenda of Ithaca, and Phyllis (Duane) Foster of Wheeler, MI. He was preceded in death by one sister, Elaine Maxwell and two brothers, Durwood Spiece and Del Ray Spiece. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 22, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Rev. Robert Ditmer officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday. Memorials may be made to Eureka Christian Church or the American Cancer Society. Military graveside services provided by the V.F.W. Post #4113 and the American Legion Post #153. Age 58 of Corunna, Michigan passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at his residence. Robert was a truck driver for Central Michigan Lumber, St. Johns, and Glasers Lumber in Vernon. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 19, 2001 at 1:00 P.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Mr. Robert Beebe and Rev. John R. Miller will officiate. Burial will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Owosso, Michigan. Visitation at the Funeral home will be Wednesday 7-9 and Thursday 2-9, with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m. He was born in Kansas, Illinois, on April 23, 1942, the son of Robert Owen and Dorothy Louise (White) Richey. On August 16, 1986 he married Beth A. Sheldon in Durand, Michigan. He was in the Navy for four years, serving as a firefighter on an aircraft carrier. He enjoyed deer hunting, duck hunting, fishing and bowling. He was a softball coach. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and lived in Corunna for the last 36 years. Survivors include his wife, Beth Richey of Corunna, four children; Nova (Larry) Watters of Corunna, Tonya (Destin) Robinson of Owosso, Michael Dise and Amanda of Arizona, and Brad Dise of Owosso, eight grandchildren, Krysti, Tayln, Hanna, Deven, Collin, Danae, Samantha, and Desiray, one sister, Sandy Richey of Owosso, a sister in-law, Jackie (Leon) Snyder of Owosso, brother in-law, Dick (Georgia) Sheldon of Owosso, special cousin, Randy (Shirley) Taylor of Virginia, special friends, Ray and Glenda Ade of Corunna, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his parents, and a special grandmother. Memorials may be made to Hospice-Memorial Healthcare Agency. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Helen E. Moon, 76, of DeWitt, passed away Jan. 16, 2001. She was born April 24, 1924 in DeWitt, the daughter of Bert and Minnie (Marzke) Moon. Helen retired from Auto Owners Insurance with more than 45 years of service. She was the church organist at Valley Farms Baptist Church and DeWitt Community Church for many years and was an active Sunday School teacher and helped in many different youth activities. Surviving are one brother, H. Vincent Moon of Lansing; two sisters, Beatrice Goetz of Williamston and Roberta Reed of DeWitt; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Eleanor C. McKinney. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at DeWitt Community Church, with Pastor Terry Alverson officiating. Interment was at DeWitt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing 48909-9986. Eva M. Shingleton, 92, of Breckenridge, passed away Monday Jan. 15, 2001 at Schneep's Healthcare Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1909 in Wheeler Township, the daughter of David and Mina (Snellenburger) Flowers. Eva was a member of Breckenridge United Methodist Church. She married Joseph Pulliam who preceded her in death in 1932. She married Earl Shingleton who also preceded her in death in 1971. Surviving are five children, Jerry (May) Pulliam of St. Johns, Jack (Betty) Pulliam of Breckenridge, Dorothy (James) Assel of Missouri, Judith (Eugene) Eichorn of Ithaca, Brenda (Arland) Sherwood of St. Louis; 31 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Flowers of Clio. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Koenigsknecht; sister, Beatrice MacArthur; and three brothers Melvin, Clare, and Paul Flowers. Funeral services were Jan. 18 at Breckenridge United Methodist Church with Emilie Forward officiating. Burial was at Ridgelawn Cemetery. Florence E. Duncan, 81, of Lansing, passed away Jan. 16, 2001. She was born Oct. 1, 1919 in Detroit, the daughter of John and Lucy Burnett. Mrs. Duncan was retired from the State of Michigan Health Department. Surviving are one daughter, Judy (John "Bob") Moody of DeWitt; two grandsons, John P. (Shelly) and Thomas E. (Brandi) Moody; three great-grandchildren, Betsy, John-Michael, and Nicholas; one brother, Stanley (Anne) Burnett of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a grandson, Kevin M. Moody in 1989. The funeral liturgy was celebrated Jan. 18 at the Gorsline-Runciman Company Chapel, with Fr. Larry Delaney of the St. Francis Retreat Center, DeWitt, officiating. The Rite of Committal was held in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt. Bishop died January 14, 2001 at the age of 70. Born in Duplain Township, Michigan August 12, 1930 the son of Chester and Avinell (Ryan) Bishop. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and retired from Federal Mogul after 39 years of service retiring in 1993. Keith married Joan Grein November 19, 1950 in Fife Lake, MI and she survives him. Also surviving are one daughter, Lorna (Gareth) Fender of St. Johns, three sons, Bruce (Jackie) Bishop of Mississippi, Edward (Cathy) Bishop of Fife Lake, and Matthew (Karen) Bishop of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one brother, Chester (Phyllis) Bishop of Traverse City. He was preceded in death by infant brother and sister, twins-Gerald and Geraldine, one sister, Roberta Powers, and four brothers, Paul, Loyal, Lonal, and Darrell Bishop. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 18, 2001 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor George Brinley officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County. Thelma P. JonesThelma P. Jones died Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the age of 90. She was born in Ovid Township March 7, 1910 to James and Anna (Parker) Morehouse. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ovid and Royal Neighbors and lived in St. Johns and Ovid all of her life. She married Orlo Jones February 20, 1934 in Ovid and he preceded her in death in 1974. Thelma is survived by one sister Mrs. Georgianna Underhill of Ovid and one brother James (Geneva) Moorhouse of Okemos, sister-In-Law Gladys Bolenbaugh of Lansing and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Robert Magee and Rev. Dennis Boonstra officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ovid Area Ambulance Service. Viola M. VermilyaViola M. Vermilya died January 12, 2001 at the age of 90. Born in Clinton County on July 20, 1910, she was the daughter of John and Maude (White) Jolls. She married Russell Vermilya November 22, 1975 and he survives her. Also surviving is one son, Del (Carolee) Allen of Washington, one daughter, Judy (Virgil) Balagot of Pacifica, CA, son-in-law, Doug Monroe of Gagetown,MI, six grandchildren, one stepson, Glen (Louise) Vermilya of Jacksonville FL, two stepdaughters, Eva (Doug) Jensen of Ovid and Joan (Lew) Sayers of Caro, twelve step grandchildren, many great grandchildren and step great grand children, and one sister Lula Ryan. She was preceded in death by one daughter Donna Monroe, one grandson Darin Monroe, and three brothers, Louis, Lionel, and Leslie. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Ovid with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Bernice C. Jorae [corrected] Bernice C. Jorae, 84, of Traverse City and formerly of Laingsburg, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at her home. She was born on Feb. 24, 1916, in Victor Township, the daughter of Arthur and Mable (Wert) Plunkett. She graduated from Laingsburg High School as a member of the class of 1934. On Sept. 17, 1940, in Laingsburg, she married Eugene Theodore Jorae. He predeceased her in 1989. She worked for St. Johns Courthouse and also R.L. Polk Co. in Traverse City. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Traverse City. She is survived by her children, Brother Anthony Jorae of River Grove, Ill., Gail Jorae, Mary Jorae and Rita (Richard) Engardio, all of Lansing, Ruth (Charles) Babcock of Sterling Heights, Pat (Carol) Jorae of Traverse City, Michael Jorae of Traverse City, John Jorae of Buckley, Dennis Jorae of Goleta, Calif., Edna Martin of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Jane (Mark) Hilden of Los Osos, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Eugene, she also was preceded in
death by two daughters, Gloria and Margaret; one brother, Lewis Plunkett; and two sisters,
Beatrice Ackley and Edna Hurst. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Isidore Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Duaine H. Pamment officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan, 1609 Park Dr., Traverse City, MI 49686. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, McDougall Chapel, in Laingsburg.
