Jean Mary Bartholomew

Jean Mary Bartholomew of Crystal and formerly of St. Johns, passed away Jan. 22, 2001 at Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma. She was born May 31, 1926 in St. Johns, the daughter of Samuel and Kathrine (Welsh) Casteel.

Mrs. Bartholomew was a life-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star of St. Johns, and a life-time member of the American Legion Post #153 Ladies Auxiliary of St. Johns. She was a member of the 8 et 40 of St. Johns, a past board member of Clinton Memorial Hospital, and a member of the Friends of Library Board. She served as director of Bement Public Library, retiring in 1990. She had lived in Crystal since 1991.

Surviving are a special friend, Hal Brandon of Crystal; one daughter, Valerie Matice of Anna Maria, Fla.; three sons, Kenneth (Kim) Bartholomew of Wilmington, Del., Bill Bartholomew of Crystal, and Craig (Kim) Bartholomew of Ft. Collins, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ladd Bartholomew, in 1975.

Memorial services were held Jan. 25 at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Matt Olson officiating. In accordance with Mrs. Bartholomew's wishes, her body will be donated to the willed donation program at Michigan State University. Final interment of her remains will be at a later date at Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Vernon C. Piggott 

Vernon C. Piggott died January 25, 2001 at the age of 79. He was born in Lebanon Township on June 17, 1921, the son of Leonard and Elma (Mallory) Piggott and lived most of his life in the Fowler area. He was a retired farmer, a member of Farm Bureau, Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and the Holy Name Society. Vernon married Marie C. Fedewa in Fowler on June 26, 1943 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are two sons, Daniel (Deanna) Piggott and David (Claudia) Piggott, all of Fowler, two daughters, Carol Piggott and Jane Brown, both of Florida, ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 29, 2001 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. R. Vincent Ferrer officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, with a rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Saturday, 3 P.M. Sunday and a vigil 8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. 

Helen McGinnis

mcginnis.jpg (9845 bytes)Age 72 of Canton, Ohio formerly of the Elsie area passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Aultman Hospital, in Canton Ohio.

Services will be held at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, Friday January 26, 2001 at 11:30 A.m. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-9 with the family present from 2-6p.m.

Mrs. McGinnis was born in Merrill, Michigan on June 28, 1928, the daughter of Jack and Doris (Seguk) Burtovoy. Helen attended school in Maple Rapids, and graduated from Elsie High School. On September 4, 1954 she married William McGinnis in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker and resided most of her life in Michigan, Ohio and California.

Survivors include; her husband, William McGinnis of Canton, Ohio; one daughter, Trudy Ann Barker of California, one son, William McGinnis of Canton, Ohio, three grandchildren, Earle, Kayla, and Kendra, five sisters, Anna Morrison, of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Betty Czachowrski, of Sumner, MI, Jacqueline (Bob) Didur of Houghton Lake, MI, Dorothy (Bruce) Baley, of Lansing, MI, Naga Phillips, of Lansing, MI, four brothers, Jack (Evelyn) Burtovoy, of Mesa, AZ, Daniel (Fern) Burtovoy, of Apache Junction, AZ, Anthony (Pam) Burtovoy, of Dimondale, MI, Larry (Laurie) Burtovoy, of Grand Ledge, MI, and many nieces and nephews.

Helen is predeceased by her parents, Jack & Doris Burtovoy, two children, Jack & Jackie, three sisters, Nancy, Jenni, and Alice, and one brother Harry.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie, Chapel.

Alma Louise Hammond

 alma.jpg (10130 bytes)Alma Louise Hammond age 98 of Corunna died Saturday, January 20, 2001 at Autumwood Nursing Home in McBain, Michigan

Funeral services will be Monday, 2:00 P.M., January 22, 2001 at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Visitation will be Monday 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Owosso, Michigan. Pastor Jonathan Balge will officiate.

Alma was born in Shiawassee County on February 13, 1902 the daughter of Louis A. and Anna ( Ruess ) Otto. She resided most of her life in Shiawassee County. On June 26, 1929 she and Floyd W. Hammond were married. Floyd died February 7, 1974. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Owosso and a former member of the Salem Lutheran Ladies Aid Society.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Patricia Hammond of Cadillac, Michigan, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, 1 brother David Otto of Laingsburg, Michigan, several nieces & nephews. Her parents, husband and 2 sons Wilber & Jim and 2 brothers predeceased her.

Memorial can be made to Salem Lutheran Church in her memory.

Ann Mason

Ann Mason died Sunday evening, January 21, 2001, in her home with her family around her after a long bout with cancer. 

Her family asks friends to join them at Ann’s home, 4816 E. Alward Rd., Laingsburg, MI 48848 on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 3 to 8 P.M. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County or Clinton Home Care. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Donald D. Welch

Donald D. Welch died January 19, 2001 at the age of 91. He was born in Perry on April 11, 1909. He retired from General Motors after 37 years of service. He married Florence Manski and she preceded him in death. 

There will be no services. The family will receive friends 10 AM-Noon Tuesday at the Osgood Funeal Home.
