Margaret M. Fedewa

Margaret M. Fedewa died February 9, 2001 at the age of 88. Born in Westphalia on January 15, 1913, she was the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Belen) Trierweiler and lived in Westphalia most of her life. Margaret was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, former Parish Council member, past president of Christian Mothers, and coordinated meals to seniors in Westphalia for Tri-County Office on Aging for 25 years. Margaret married Frank Simon on May 30, 1936 and he preceded her in death on February 7, 1956. Her marriage to Harold Fedewa on June 6, 1961 ended with his death on May 13, 1979.  

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann (Robert) Schmitt of Westphalia and Sandra (Philip) Spitzley of Pewamo, twelve grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren.   Margaret also has two brothers, Leland (Marcella) Trierweiler and Francis (Wilma) Trierweiler, of Westphalia, five sisters, Helen Daly of Ionia, Genevieve LaRue of Arizona, Arlene (Norman) Rademacher of St. Johns, Mary Jane (Fred) Grove of Wacousta, and Joyce (Alvin) Kloeckner of Eagle.  

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 12, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia, burial at St. Mary's Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Cecilio Reyna officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at St. Mary's Chapel with Rosaries being prayed 3 and 8 P.M. both days. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Doris M. Abbott 

Doris M. Abbott died February 7, 2001 at the age of 63. She was born in Maple Rapids on April 12, 1937, the daughter of Gerald and Bertha (Roberts) Abbott and lived most of her life in Ithaca. 

She is survived by two brothers, Richard (Janet) Abbott of Ithaca and Donald (Marje) Abbott of Grand Ledge, two sisters, Pauline Lowe of St. Johns and Lucille (Maurice) Paine of Perrinton, sister-in-law, Connie Abbott of North Branch, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie Abbott and Rodney Abbott, and one brother-in-law, James Lowe. 

Private funeral services will be held. Memorials may be made to Gratiot County Mental Health in Alma. Arrangements by the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids.

Donna Jean Waggoner

Waggoner-Donna2.jpg (8903 bytes)Donna Jean Waggoner died Wednesday, February 7, 2001at the age of 71. She was born in St. Johns on October 28, 1929 the daughter of Walter “Bud” and Velma (Krepps) Witt. She was a 1947 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School, a member of the Eureka Congregational Christian Church and worked for Gower Hardware in Eureka and Randolph’s Redi – Mix Concrete in St. Johns. Donna’s life was always centered around her family and church. Donna married Wendell Waggoner June 15, 1947 in St. Johns and he survives her. 

Also surviving are two sons Ron (Vicki) Waggoner and Russ (Sheila) Waggoner all of St. Johns, grandchildren Keli (Mark) Chapman, Kimberli Waggoner, Kristen Waggoner and Hali Waggoner, three great grandchildren, Makela and Dawson Chapman and Austin Waggoner, one brother Duane (Beverly) Witt of Mason, four sisters-in-law Wanda Randolph and Fern Waggoner of St. Johns, Erma Robinson of Eureka and Ellen Waggoner of Roscommon, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Iola Knickerbocker and granddaughter Lani Mae Waggoner. 

Funeral service will be 11: 00 A.M. Saturday, February 10, 2001at the Eureka Congregational Christian Church, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Pastor Robert Ditmer officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to the Eureka Congregational Christian Church, Hospice for Clinton County or Hospice House of Mid Michigan.

Erin Kristina-Louise Rice

Erin Kristina-Louise Rice born on July 11, 1976 went peacefully into the waiting arms of our Lord on February 5, 2001. Erin was a very caring, giving individual, especially with children. Erin spent her short years on this earth giving much and expecting little in return. Erin was a very active member at Plymouth Congregational Church where she served in Youth Choirs, as Acolyte or Crucifer. She was an active member of the Board of Education at Plymouth and also gave willingly of her time in the Nursery Program at the church. She was involved for many years in Congregational Pilgrim Fellowship Youth Group. Erin attended St. Johns school system where she was an active member of the band for several years playing both the clarinet and the flute. She was self-employed as a daycare provider. 

Survivors include Phyllis J. Rice of St. Johns, Lynda Marie (Roderick) Hardy of Lansing, Herbert E. (Kim) Rice of Arlington, TX, Donald and Rosaline Swagart and family, Louise and Ronald Beemer and family, and many special friends. She was preceded in death by Robert Rice and James Rice. 

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the Plymouth Congregational Church, Lansing, burial 1:00 P.M. at Sowle Cemetery, Maple Rapids, with Rev. Penny Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday and Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Berta Slife

Berta Slife, 92, of Ft. Collins, Colo., died Jan. 12, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Village nursing facility in Ft. Collins. There were no services; cremation took place. Her ashes will be buried later at St. Johns, Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Bertha was born to Etta Harper Gillett and George Holcomb Gillett in 1908. She was raised in St. Johns and it was there she married Glee Slife.They had two daughters.

She and her husband lived in many places after leaving St. Johns in 1949. She loved her family and enjoyed many activities, and especially her yards, gardens and many friends. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Nordin of Ft. Collins, Colo. , and Janet Redfern of Hobe Sound, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one grandchild.

Josie Marie Oberlin

oberlin.jpg (15326 bytes)Age 78 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Thursday, February 8, 2001 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 12, 2001 at 10:00 A.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, with Rev. Fr. Paul Cummings officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Saturday 7-9 and Sunday 2-9, with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m. A Rosary will be prayed Sunday evening at 7:00 P.m.

Josie was born in Elsie, Michigan on August 12, 1922 the daughter of Andrew & Katrina (Duzek) Bernath. On December 28, 1946 she married Robert Oberlin in Elsie, Michigan. She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, fishing, her flower garden, and polka music. Her special enjoyment came from her grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid and the Altar Society. She also belonged to The Sunshine Club. She resided most of her life in the Bannister and Elsie area.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Oberlin of Elsie, MI, two daughters, Caroline (Mike) Smith of Traverse City, MI, and Rose (Kenneth) Goldman of Denver, CO, one son, Randy (Shelly) Oberlin of Elsie, MI, four grandchildren; Randy, Sara, Nicholas, and Joshua, three brothers, Steve (Mary) Bernath of Flint, MI, Joseph (Irene) Bernath of Bannister, MI, and Frank (Mary) Bernath of Elsie, MI, a sister in law, Marie Bernath of Corunna, MI, and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, one sister, Anna Kopchitz, and two brothers, Andy and Nick Bernath.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, Michigan.

The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Gloria Marie Mabel Russell

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in St. Johns, Michigan. Pastor Virginia R. Wickwire will officiate.

 Gloria was born in Fountain, Michigan on November 24, 1924, the daughter of Glen Harrison and Mabel Barbara (Randall) Foster. She graduated from Custer High School with the Class of 1941. On September 5, 1955 she married William A. Russell in Lansing, Michigan. She worked for the State of Michigan until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in St. Johns. She was also a member of the Guild of Organist, a former Girl Scout leader, District Music Director, church pianist for her church, and Central Michigan Lapidary & Mineral Society. She resided most of her life in the Lansing area before moving to St. Johns in 1997.

Survivors include her husband, William Russell of St. Johns, MI, one daughter, Gloria (Frank) Bigelow of St. Johns, MI, one son Robert (Joyce) Russell of Matteson, IL, four grandchildren, Jennifer, Echo, Jacqueline and William, two stepdaughters, Judie (Art) Fries of Lansing, MI, and Toni Elsey of Washington, one stepson, William (Alvina) Russell of Missouri, and six step grandchildren, Diane, Denise, Kimberly, Heather, Joe, Jeremy, and Briana. She was predeceased by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the music program for her church. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.
