Carol A. BarthelCarol A. Barthel died February 15, 2001 at the age of 52. She was born in St. Johns on March 8, 1948, the daughter of Willard E. and Oneta (Crawford) Barthel. She was a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing, was employed by Hurley Hospital, McLaren Health System, and was most recently a faculty member of Michigan State University College of Nursing. She was a 1966 graduate of Ovid High School, a 1970 graduate of Alma College with a B.A. in English, a 1973 graduate of Hurley Hospital School of Nursing, and a graduate of the University of Michigan with a M.A. in education and a M.S. in nursing. She enjoyed her dog, Susie, traveling, music, shopping, and working with her students. Surviving are her mother, Oneta Barthel of Ovid, and cousins, Georgina (Ed) Davidek of Flint and Borgie (Earl) Bailey of Indiana. Funeral services will be 5:00 P.M. Sunday, February 18, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Robert Magee and Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 2-5 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Carol A. Barthel scholarship fund at the Michigan State University College of Nursing. Age 91 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns. Lloyd was a retired farmer & mechanic, and for a number of years worked for Gowers in Eureka, Michigan. A Celebration of his Life will be held Saturday, February 17, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Family and friends will officiate. Burial will take place at Duplain Township Cemetery, Duplain Township, Michigan. He was born in Fowler, Michigan on September 5, 1909, the son of Tecumseh & Effie (Newman) Whitford. On March 20, 1936 he married Stella Kurowski in Maple Rapids, Michigan. Stella died January 8, 1999. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area. Survivors include two daughters, Hazel M. Wilson of Elsie, MI, and Ellen M. Fleming of St. Louis, MI, one son, Robert Wilson of Elsie, MI, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister and one brother. Memorials may be made to the Elsie Public Library. Terry L. OpdykeTerry L. (Doerner) Opdyke, 43, of Lansing passed away Feb. 12, 2001. She was born Aug. 13, 1957 in Monterey Calif., the daughter of Louis and Nancy (Marlatt) Doerner. Terry started her career at Fisher Body in the 1970s and then started working in the banking business with First National Great Lake Banks and Old Kent Bank. She was a former member of the Lansing Jaycees. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, golfing and crafts. She could build anything. She loved the outdoors, nature and her pets. She is survived by her husband, Richard; her parents, Louis and Nancy Doerner; one stepson Michael Opdyke; three sisters, Lu Ann (Brad) Schaibly, Becky (Mick) Goodwin, Jody (Marty) Hollern; one brother, Walter (Barb) Doerner; two half brothers, Louis (Mindy) Doerner and David Doerner; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends. The funeral service was held Feb. 15 at Tiffany Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Van Dye officiating. Memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Fred DennisFred Dennis died February 10, 2001 at the age of 74. He was born in Williamston on April 29, 1926, the son of Fred and Hazel (Barritt) Dennis and lived in the Ovid area most of his life wintering in Florida for the past 11 years. He was a carpenter, a veteran of World War II, and was active on the Board of Directors of the Sunny Grove Mobile Home Park in Florida. Fred married Betty Martens in Ovid on October 9, 1948 and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Cindy Patterson Campbell of Grand Ledge and Deb Parmenter of Lansing, one son, Bruce (Sue) Dennis of California, two grandchildren, Jeff Patterson of Ovid and Jenn Patterson of Toledo, OH. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Dennis and Leonard Dennis, one sister, Mary Tetzlaff, and son-in-law, Tom Campbell. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 15, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 5-9 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of Florida or the American Lung Association for research of pulmonary fibrosis. G. Gene PettigrewG. Gene Pettigrew died February 10, 2001 at the age of 67. He was born in Ellery, IL on April 7, 1933, the son of Gordon T. and Florence E. (Doty) Pettigrew and lived in the St. Johns & Eureka area most of his life. He was a farmer most of his life, a carpenter, an avid horseman, and past president of the Eureka Burial Grounds. Gene married Betty Taylor in Mattoon, IL on April 7, 1951 and she survives him. Also surviving are four children, Shirley Eldridge, Michael (Paula) Pettigrew, Curt (Kathy) Pettigrew, and Bob (Linda Wicke) Pettigrew, all of St. Johns, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Alice Hoeve of St. Johns, and sister-in-law, Alma Pettigrew of Bowie, TX. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis A. Pettigrew in 1980 and son-in-law, Ken Eldridge in 1998. Memorial services will be 5:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at Eureka Christian Church Gymnasium with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. Memorials may be made to Clinton Home Health. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home. Age 73 of Lansing, Michigan passed away Saturday, February 10, 2001 in Ithaca, Michigan. Edwin was a retired Superintendent from Southern Clinton County Municipal Utilities Authority. Memorial services will be held Tuesday February 13, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Rev. Jana Jirak will officiate. Burial will be at Freemont Cemetery, Bancroft, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday morning at 10:00 A.m. until the time of the service. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on September 14, 1927, the son of Hiram Stanton & Dorothy Margaret (Lish) Lawrence. He resided most of his life in the Lansing area. Survivors include his former wife, Rosemary Lawrence of Ithaca, MI, one son, David & Dana Lawrence of Grand Ledge, MI, one daughter, Berneice & David Pfeiffer of Durand, MI, one granddaughter, Jessica and one sister, Sharon Jones of California. He was predeceased by his parents, and one sister, Lorraine Cole. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army. The family is being served by Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Jerre' V. ThompsonJerre' V. Thompson, 64, of DeWitt passed away Feb. 6, 2001 in Lansing. Jerre' was born April 14, 1936 in Greenville, the son of Wendell and Gertrude (Pentoney) Thompson. A lifetime resident of Lansing, he was a 1955 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School, and retired in 1995 from Story Oldsmobile after 17 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed many hobbies, his favorite being antique cars and trucks. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandpa. Surviving are his wife Penny Lee (Wruck); son Jerre' Daniel (Becky S.) Thompson; grandchildren, Aaron Matthew Thompson, Tiffany Olajos, Elizabeth Olajos, Nick Olajos, Nadia Olajos, Zolton Olajos, Knicole Hrywnak, Shannon Hrywnak, Brian Hrywnak, and Shawn Hrywnak; and one great- grandchild, A. J. Kest. Funeral services were held Feb. 9 at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, interment at Deepdale Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Don Weston of South Church of Nazarene officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's or to the Ronald McDonald House. Edna F. RoneyEdna F. Roney, 83, of Lansing, passed away Feb. 11, 2001. She was born Oct. 5, 1917 in St. Louis. Mrs. Roney graduated from Lansing Central High School. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was recently a member of Hope Lutheran Church, DeWitt. She worked at Knapps, Arbaughs and retired from Sears. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was precded in death by her husband, James and son, Patrick. Surviving are her son, Terry (Nancy) of DeWitt; daughter, Maggie (Tom); two grandchildren, James and Kimarie (Jason); two great-grandchildren , Skyler and Sheyenne; two brothers, James (Martha) Brendahl of Lansing and Donald Brendahl of Owosso; sisters, Flossie Smith of Lansing and Thelma (Bob) Myers of Olivet. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Hope Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Straub, vacancy pastor, officiating. Interment was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Memorials may be made to Hazel Findlay Country Manor or Hope Lutheran Church Building Fund. |
