Ruth F. Ferguson

Ruth F. Ferguson died April 19, 2001 at  the age of 89. Born at home in Clinton County on August 1, 1911, the daughter of Raymond and Ivah (Jury) Green. She was a homemaker and a member of Lowe United Methodist Church. Ruth married Neil Ferguson on June 10, 1933 and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1988. 

Surviving are two sons, Lynn (Susan) Ferguson and Rex (Louise) Ferguson, all of St. Johns, four grandchildren, Scott Ferguson of St. Johns, Tim Ferguson of Tucson, Arizona, Becky Ferguson and Ken Ferguson, both of St. Johns, one great grandchild, Samantha Lynn, and two sisters, Myrtle (Loree) Findlay and Alice Bullard, all of St. Johns. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Carol Jean, one sister, Esther Crosby, and two brothers, Sam and Donnie Green. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 22, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Lowe Cemetery with  Rev. Joe Spackman officiating. The family will receive friends 6-9 P.M. Friday and 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert Bates

bates.jpg (8264 bytes)Robert G. Bates, 64, of Elsie, died April 18, 2001. He was born April 30, 1936 in Elsie, the son of Gail Robert and Emma (Gregory) Bates. He lived in the Elsie area most of his life.

He graduated from Elsie High School with the Class of 1954. He was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Bannister, the Eagles Club, and TPA. He played guitar for 35 years and played in Helen Ann's Dance Band. He was a collector of model cars and he enjoyed drawing cars since he was a boy. He also enjoyed playing cards and going to auto races.

He was retired from the State of Michigan, Transportation Department.

He married Helen Ann Hedrich June 7, 1958 in Oakley, and she survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Teresa (Rick) Ward of Elsie; two sons, Mark (Kathy) Bates of St. Johns, and James Bates of Ovid; five grandchildren, Misty (Ed) White, Terri, Chris, Ashley, and Brianna; one brother, Richard (Diane) Bates of Elsie. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Clare.

Mass of Christian Burial was held April 21 at St. Cyril's Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Max Frego officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie. Arrangements were by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Memorials may be made to WOES Radio, or Elsie Area Ambulance Equipment Fund.

Evelyn W. Starkey

Evelyn W. Starkey, 78, of Lansing, passed away April 15, 2001 in Lansing.

She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors are a son, John (Shellie) Starkey of DeWitt; two daughters, Bonnie Starkey of Grand Ledge, and Trudy (Alan) Strouse of St. Johns; five grandchildren, Alicia and Christopher Starkey, Caitlyn, Alexander and Samantha Strouse; special friend, Myra Brady of Lansing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Arthur.

Funeral services were held April 19 at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with the Rev. Lyle Heaton of the Wacousta Community United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was at the Wacousta Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.

Marie E. Brown

Marie E. Brown died April 17, 2001 at the age of 90. Born August 13, 1910 in North Shade Township, Michigan the daughter of William and Sophia (Mann) Welton.  She was a homemaker and attended the First Congregational Church and a former member of Lowe Womens Christian Fellowship.  Marie married Carl L. Brown March 15, 1930 and he preceded her in death February 22, 1981.  

She is survived by one daughter, Ruthann (Harold) Ellis of West Palm Beach, Florida, one son, Jerry (Marilyn) Brown of Woodburn, Kentucky, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by a grandson, Ricky Shinaberry, and four brothers, Clayton, Leo, Lester, and Stanley Welton.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, burial at Payne Cemetery with Pastor Bob Ditmer officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Elmer V. Mead Sr.

mead.jpg (5994 bytes)Age 88 of Bath, Michigan formerly of Elsie passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Edward Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 16, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be Saturday 6-8 and Sunday 4-8 P.m.

Elmer was born in Duplain Township, Michigan on April 1, 1913, the son of Floyd and Ida (McIntosh) Mead. He married Pauline Kusnier in 1940 in Bannister, Michigan. He graduated from Elsie High School with the Class of 1931. He retired in 1978 from Michigan Milk Producers Association in Ovid, after 38 years of service. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area before moving to Bath in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Mead of Bath, MI, three sons, Elmer "Bud" Mead Jr., Ronald Mead, and David Mead all of Bath, MI, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to Charity of Donor’s Choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Joan M. Hardman

Joan M. (Parker) Hardman, 68, of Farwell, and formerly of St. Johns, passed away April 14, 2001 at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1932, in LaPorte, Ind., the daughter of Benjamin and Letha (Kuhns) Parker.

She married Dale Harman Oct. 28, 1950 in St. Johns. They moved to the Farwell area in 1997.

She enjoyed making country crafts and gifts. She was a member of the Hospital Volunteers at Mid-Michigan Medical Center, Clare, and the Harrison Moose Lodge and the Lake Rod and Gun Club.

Joan is survived by her husband, Dale; her mother, Letha Bashore of St. Johns; a son, Craig Hardman of DeWitt; daughter, Linda Walling of Farwell; a brother, Jerry Bashore of Lake; sister, Karen Martens of St. Johns; grandchildren, BreAnn, Joshua, Tonya, Trisha, and Trent, and great-grandchildren, Alick, Ashtyn, Jacob, Jared, and Austin.

Funeral services were held April 18 at the Stephenson-Wyam Funeral Home, Clare. Burial was at the Surrey Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Central Michigan Hospice.
