Bernice McFadden

mcfadden.jpg (8078 bytes)Age 91 of Ashley, Michigan passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at Ashley Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 27, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Jana Jirak will officiate. Private family graveside services will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 and Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 P.m.

Bernice was born in Wapello, Iowa on April 3, 1910, the daughter of John E. & Nellie Pearl (Whitehead) Wheeler. She married Clarence Burton McFadden in Columbus Junction, Iowa on December 1, 1928. He died August 29, 1981. She moved to the Ashley area in 1953. She was a homemaker and she broke & trained horses. She also instructed students on Western & English style of riding horses for competition. She was very active in Gratiot and Clinton County 4-H programs, and also the MSU 4-H program.

Survivors include one daughter, Jerelyn & Lowell Richard of Spring Hill, FL, and one son, Marvin & Beverly McFadden of Nokomis, FL, two granddaughters, Linda Richard, and Terrie Bell, five grandsons, Gregory & Shirley McFadden, Michael McFadden, Mark & Cindy McFadden, Rick & Mary Richard, and Paul & Rosalyn Richard, four great granddaughters, Emily & Shannon McFadden, Sarah Bell, and Jennifer Richard, seven great grandsons, Gregory Jr. & Kevin McFadden, Jason, Eric, Paul, & David Richard, Zachary Bell, one sister Verlee Cary of Iowa, and two brothers, George Earl & Barbara Wheeler of Nebraska, and Robert & Sandy Wheeler of Illinois.

She was predeceased by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Arthur Courtland

Arthur L. Courtland, 76, of DeWitt passed away April 24, 2001. He was born March 3, 1925, the son of Carl and Katherine (Decker) Courtland. He lived in the DeWitt area all of his life.  He married Mary Lou Hardman July 31, 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and worked at Oldsmobile for 25 years.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou; daughter, Lois Courtland of Alberquerque, N.M.; son. Tom Courtland of Lansing; seven nieces and seven nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard; and sister, Evelyn.

There were no services. The family was served by Gorsline-Runciman.

Gerald D. Carpenter

Gerald D. Carpenter died April 19, 2001 at the age of 88. He was born in Duplain Township on October 30, 1912, the son of Judson and Nellie (Gibbs) Carpenter and lived most of his life in Ovid. He was a self-employed mechanic, a 1930 graduate of Ovid High School, a member of the Ovid Masonic Lodge and Owosso Eagles Lodge. Gerald married Hazel Williams in Lansing on November 4, 1936 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are two sons, Gerald Lee Carpenter of Muskegon and Jeffrey C. Carpenter of Haslett, four daughters, Geraldine (Irving) Arnett, Debbie (Mike) Hettler, all of St. Johns, Pat (Mike) Holder of Owosso, and Dorothy (Chuck) Sparks of Cadillac, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and one sister, Alice Gaullt of Alma. He was preceded in death by one son, Keith Carpenter. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Monday, April 23, 2001 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Mike Hixon officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
Masonic services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Sunday evening.  
 

Oren J. Goodrich

Goodrich-Oren.jpg (8533 bytes)Oren J. Goodrich died April 19, 2001 at the age of 81. He was born in Shepardsville on June 18, 1919, the son of Egbert and Jessie (Brown) Goodrich and lived most of his life in Ovid. He was a farmer and retired from Federal Mogul, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a member of Duplain Church of Christ. Oren married Franchion Binger in Clinton County on March 2, 1941 and she preceded him in death on January 31, 1990, he then married Marian Gilbertston in Deland, FL January 3, 1992. 

Surviving are three sons, Edwin Goodrich and Don (Patricia) Goodrich, all of Ovid, and Jay “Sandy” (Nancy) Goodrich of Lewisville, TX, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Stella Goodrich, and two brothers, Red and Roland Goodrich. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 23, 2001 at Duplain Church of Christ, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Phil Beavers officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid. Memorials may be made to the Duplain Church of Christ. Military graveside services provided by V.F.W. Post #4113 and American Legion Post #153.

Ruth F. Ferguson

Ferguson-Ruth.jpg (13409 bytes)Ruth F. Ferguson died April 19, 2001 at  the age of 89. Born at home in Clinton County on August 1, 1911, the daughter of Raymond and Ivah (Jury) Green. She was a homemaker and a member of Lowe United Methodist Church. Ruth married Neil Ferguson on June 10, 1933 and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1988.  

Surviving are two sons, Lynn (Susan) Ferguson and Rex (Louise) Ferguson, all of St. Johns, four grandchildren, Scott Ferguson of St. Johns, Tim Ferguson of Tucson, Arizona, Becky Ferguson and Ken Ferguson, both of St. Johns, one great grandchild, Samantha Lynn, and two sisters, Myrtle (Loree) Findlay and Alice Bullard, all of St. Johns. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Carol Jean, one sister, Esther Crosby, and two brothers, Sam and Donnie Green. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 22, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Lowe Cemetery with  Rev. Joe Spackman officiating. The family will receive friends 6-9 P.M. Friday and 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
