Age 79 of Ashley, Michigan passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the Ashley Healthcare Center. She was a homemaker. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 28, 2001 at 9:00 A.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Bennett Constantine will officiate. Burial will take place at North Star Cemetery, North Star, Michigan. Visitation will be at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Sunday 2-8 P.m. Sophie was born in Lansing, Michigan on October 28, 1921 the daughter of Peter and Anna (Orzelski) Dembowski. She graduated from Ithaca High School. On April 14, 1945 she married William F. Motz, Sr. in Lansing, Michigan. He died on September 27, 1999. She was raised in the Catholic Faith. She was also a 50-year member of ZCBJ #225 in Bannister, Michigan. She resided most of her life in the Ashley area. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia & Allen Hatch of Grand Blanc, MI, two sons, William F. Motz Jr. & Donna of Eaton Rapids, MI, and Larry & Ginger Motz of Lansing, MI, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, one sister, Rosemary & Robert Fretter of Lansing, MI, one brother, Walter & Maggie Dembowski of Lansing, MI, three sister in-laws, Alice Dembowski of Lansing, MI, Mary Dembowski of Warner Robbins, GA, and Vlasta Motz of Ashley, MI, and one brother in-law, Joe & Ann Motz, of St. Johns, MI. She was predeceased by her parents, one daughter, Donna, three brothers, Ed, Joseph, & Hank, and one sister, Stella Dembowski. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Michael D. VanceMichael D. Vance died May 24, 2001 at the age of 47. He was born in St. Johns on February 1, 1954, the son of Calvin and Betty (Martin) Vance and lived in the Pewamo-Westphalia area all his life. He was a retired Federal Mogul employee, a 1972 graduate of Pewamo-Westphalia High School, and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Fishcreek Sportsmans Club in Carson City. Mike married Denise Boak in St. Johns on August 26, 1983 and she survives him. Also surviving are one daughter, Melissa (Dave) Schafer of Pewamo, three step daughters, Mindy (Brett) Schafer of Wixom, Tracy (Paul) Dunn, and Alison Koenigsknecht, all of Fowler, one step son, Chris Koenigsknecht of Perrinton, seven grandchildren, parents, Calvin and Betty Vance, one sister, Jean (Larry) Carr, all of Carson City, and special friend, Ryan Schueller of Fowler. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, May 26, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fowler, with Pastor Paul Clark officiating. The family will receive friends 10:00 A.M. noon Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to Lutherans for Life. Arrangements by the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Anna Mae Hall died May 24, 2001 at the age of 96. She was born in Vigo County, Indiana on February 19, 1905, the daughter of Sherman and Jennie (Watts) Taylor and lived in St. Johns coming from Terre Haute, Ind. She was a graduate of Pimento High School, a saleslady for Meis Department Store, a member of Terra Haute First Baptist Church, Women's Department Club and Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of the Niles. Anna married Herman Hall and he preceded her in death in 1978. Surviving are one daughter, Mariam Patton of St. Johns; three grandchildren, Mary Beth (Tom) Moldenhauer, Linda Patton, all of St. Johns and Tom (Anita) Patton of Webberville; three step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, Terre Haute, Ind. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home. Richard R. Fields, 64, of Lebanon, Mo., and formerly of Carson City, died May 24, 2001, in Lebanon, Mo. He was born Sept. 8, 1936 in Ithaca, the son of Paul and Ida (Fetch) Fields. He made his home in Michigan for most of his iife having lived in Carson City, Fowler, and St. Johns. He later moved to Florida and North Carolina for a few years, before moving to Missouri. Throughout his life he worked as a restaurant cook and taught cooking classes. He loved planning and preparing meals. He was a member of the Thomas Chapel Church near Lebanon. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #43 of Lebanon, having served in the U.S. Army. Richard married his wife of 15 years, Phyllis Briggs, Oct. 24, 1986, and she survives him. Also surviving are his daughters, Evelyn (Rick) Bush of Elsie, Monica (Kent) Hoskins of Ovid, and Brenda (Scott) Young of St. Johns; the mother of his children, Hedy Rose of St. Johns; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry Fields of Las Vegas, Nev., Don (Sally) Fields of Carson City; sister-in-law, Mary Fields of Carson City; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Wava (Floyd) Messer of Fowler, Marilee (Jake) Churchill, Donna (Jim) Proctor, all of Carson City,; Sharon (Richard) Clark of Alma; several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Richard H. Fields; brother, Paul Fields; and sister Ardis Antes. The funeral Mass was celebrated May 17 at the Thomas Chapel Church in Lebanon. Arrangements were made by the Holman-Howe funeral homes of Lebanon. Military graveside honors provided by the VFW Post #43. Vera I. CookVera I. Cook died May 22, 2001 at the age of 93. Born August 22, 1907 in Matherton, Michigan the daughter of Albert and Emelia (Roll) Schafer. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society, and enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Vera worked as a seamstress for the former Mitchell Bentley Company of Ionia for 30 years. She married Casper Cook February 18, 1928 and he preceded her in death March 11, 1962. Vera is survived by three daughters, M. Eileen Thelen of Fowler, Bertine (Leon) Thelen of St. Johns, and Joan Raddatz of Ovid, daughter-in-law, Myrona Cook of New Jersey, 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Anna Cook of Pewamo. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Amelia Cook, one son, Philip Cook, two sisters, Irene Fox and Hildagard Schafer, one brother, Norbert Schafer, and two sons-in-laws, Marvin Thelen and Ray Raddatz. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 25, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, with Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. Rosaries will be prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Thursday at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler. Age 76 of Bannister, Michigan passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001 at Cadillac Memorial Hospital in Cadillac, Michigan. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 1:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday 7-9 and Tuesday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m. There will also be a Masonic Service Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.m. at the funeral home. George was born in Flint, Michigan on October 1, 1924, the son of Melvin LeRoy & Alma Mae (Allen) Keck. He graduated from Elsie High School with the Class of 1942. On May 11, 1946 he married Effie J. Smith in Chapin, Michigan. He retired from Peet Packing in Chesaning in 1985. He attended the Elsie United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII with the Pacific Fleet. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #238 in Elsie and a member of the Elsie Lions Club. He also enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Kountry Kousins Square Dance group. He resided most of his life in the Ashley and Bannister areas. Survivors include his wife, Effie J. Keck of Bannister, MI, one daughter, Suann & Ronald Mead of Owosso, MI, four sons, George F. & Rita Keck of Bannister, MI, Keith & Rebecca Keck of Pleasant Hill, CA, Douglas & Della Keck of Corunna, MI, and Jeffery & Suzette Keck of Sterling Heights, MI, fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, one sister, Jenny Mae Clark of Bancroft, MI. He was predeceased by his parents. Memorials may be made to Masonic Lodge #238 Scholarship Fund or Elsie United Methodist Church.
