wadell.jpg (7774 bytes)Age 90 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 22, 2001 at 2:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Robert Ditmer will officiate. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday 2-8 with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.m.

Mary was born in McLean County, Illinois on October 24, 1910, the daughter of Arthur Guy & Lucy May (Notestine) Umstattd. She graduated from Elsie High School with the Class of 1927 and in 1929 she graduated from Clinton County Normal as a schoolteacher. On November 24, 1932 she married Harry C. Wadell in Duplain Township. Harry predeceased her on December 22, 1975. She was a schoolteacher at the Lowe & Corp Schools, she was also a farmer and loved the outdoors, mowing lawn and working in her gardens. She was an avid letter writer. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and took great care in keeping records of everyone. She shared many stories of days done by with her family, such as driving her horse, Topsy to High School every day. Her five children, twenty-two grandchildren, and thirty-two great grandchildren will miss her. She was a longtime member of the Eureka Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and started the Junior Church program in the 60’s. She was a member of Clinton County Farm Bureau, Women’s Fellowship at the Eureka Christian Church. She attended many functions with the Elsie Masonic Lodge widows group.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Marilyn L. & Donald Clark of Elsie, Janice J. & David Yallup of St. Johns, Betty J. & Mervin Hallead of St. Johns, and two sons, Lyle H. & Kathleen Wadell of Groton, NY, and Charles A. & Gail Wadell of Elsie, 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews & cousins, and her church family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, and a sister Gertrude Hofferbert.

Memorials may be made to Eureka Christian Church or the Elsie Masonic Lodge.

Orpha B. Clement

clement.jpg (11681 bytes)Age 94 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid, Michigan. She was associated with the Elsie Public Library for more than 50 years and was the Librarian for 30 years. She was also the Village of Elsie Treasurer for 30 years. She enjoyed talking about politics and was a friend to everyone she knew.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 22, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate. Burial will take place at West Haven Cemetery, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 P.m.

Orpha was born in New Haven Township, Michigan on November 21, 1906, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Amos) Dellamater. She graduated from Owosso Public School. On March 5, 1935 she married Bion Clement in Elsie, Michigan. He died on November 30, 1959. She was also a member of the Women’s Literary Club in Elsie.

She is survived by a host of friends and cousins.

Charles Stead

Charles T. Stead, 87, of Perrinton, died June 19, 2001. He was born July 26, 1913 in Fulton Township, the son of Elmer and Jennie (Simms) Stead.

He was a member of U.A.W. Local 724 retiring from Lundberg Screw Products in Lansing after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church of Maple Rapids.

He married Evelyn E. Peters June 25, 1936 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Laura (Richard) Mitchell of Ithaca and Sheila (Robert) Beck of St. Johns; one son, David (Florence) Stead of Ithaca; daughter-in law, Judy Stead of Lansing; 10 grandchildren, Cindy (Terry) Hector of Sumner, Todd (Clarissa) Leslie of Ithaca, Scott (Lissa) Leslie of Florida, Laurie (Allen) Switzer of Sheridan, Jennifer (Terry) Welch of Alma, Brian Stead of Lansing, Michelle (Mark) Rosendale of St. Johns, Angela Beck of St. Johns, Kristie (Randy) Johnston of Maple Rapids, and Heather Nichole Stead of Ithaca; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Stead, and infant granddaughter, Lynette Leslie.

Funeral services were held June 22 at the Congregational Christian Church, burial at Fulton Center Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Congregational Christian Church.

Vernon “Stan” Snyder II

Snyder-Vernon.jpg (9496 bytes)Vernon “Stan” Snyder II, died June 16, 2001 at the age of 78. Born in LaJunta, Colorado on September 18, 1922, he was the son of Vernon and Mamie (Smith) Snyder. Stan married Betty (Slagel) Snyder June 18, 1944. 

He is survived by his wife Betty of Lansing, four children, Jake Snyder of Toledo, Ohio, Carla (Jesse) Trevino of Toledo, Ohio, John (Rose) Snyder of Lansing and Mary Beth (Tom Wright) Snyder of Benton Harbor, nine grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, four brothers, Vincent (Ruby) Snyder of Goshen, Indiana, John (Nona) Snyder of Hesston, Kansas, Gaylord (Ann) Snyder of Juno Beach, Florida, Clifford (Donna) Snyder of Ashely, and two sisters, Carolyn Ely of St. Johns and Marilyn (John) Jackson of Macy, Indiana. Stanley is also survived by many close and dear friends. Stan was preceded in death by his parents. Stanley was a man of many and diverse talents. He found success as a farmer, mechanic, builder, auto body repairman and businessman, working as an independent insurance adjuster since 1963. He most excelled as a devoted husband and father and lived his life as he professed his faith, passing from this life to the next at peace with God, with himself and with his family. 

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Bethel Mennonite Church, burial at Washington Township Cemetery with Pastor June Mears-Dreidger officiating. Frances Fizzell

fizzell.jpg (6222 bytes)Age 78 of Elsie, Michigan died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Hazel Findley Country Manor in St. Johns, Michigan. Frances was a beautician and a homemaker.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate and burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-8 with family present 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.

Frances was born in Sanilac County Michigan on May 14, 1923 the daughter of Frank & Elizabeth ( VanNorstram ) VanAtter. She was married to Roy "Fuzzy" Fizzell and Roy died on July 7, 1975.

Frances was a member of the former Faith Baptist Church in Elsie and she worked with Rural Bible Ministries. She also taught Sunday school and she enjoyed visiting nursing homes and singing with the church group.

Survivors include her daughter, Iva & Dan Fivecoat of Florida, 1 daughter in law, Carolyn Fizzell and her fiancé Lyle D. Mund of Laingsburg, 4 grandsons, Ronald & Marsha Fizzell of Laingsburg, Scott Fizzell, California, David Fivecoat of Florida, Dennis Fivecoat of North Carolina, 3 great-grandchildren; Lindsay, Curtis & Justin. She was predeceased by her parents, her son Ronald in 1990.

Memorials can be made to Pet Partners Nursing Home Program. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

 

V. Geraldine Martin

Born in St. Johns September 29, 1912 the daughter of Fred and Verona (Esch) Rahl and lived in St. Johns all of her life.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society.  Geraldine married Francis Martus in September 1929 and he preceded her in death in September 1929.  She then married Gerald Martin August 1, 1939 and he preceded her in death July 20, 1969.  

Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Richard) Miller of St. Johns, three sons, John (Jean) Martin of St. Johns, James (Delphine) Martin of North Dakota, and Kurt Martin of Colorado, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one great great grandchildren, her brother, Richard Rahl of St. Johns, sister-in-law, Jean Nuechterlein of Colorado, and brother-in-law, Ralph (Vera) Martin of Mason.  In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two daughters, infant daughter, Mary Ann Martin & Marilyn Kieffer and three brothers, Chimes, Theodore, and Merlyn Rahl. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Gilbert Rahrig and Fr. Paul Cummings officiating.  The family will receive friends at the Osgood Funeral Home 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday with a Rosary being prayed 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ovid Healthcare Center.
