Alphonse “Al” S. Caudy

Alphonse “Al” Caudy died July 11, 2001 at the age of 79. He was born in St. Johns on June 26, 1922, the son of Alphonse and Agnes (Kuchar) Caudy and lived in Lansing most of his life. He was a retired welder for Oldsmobile and enjoyed gardening and gathering walnuts and hickory nuts in the fall.  Al married Ruth and she survives him. 

Surviving are one daughter, Lydia Stewart (fiancé Jason Gardner), three grandchildren, Thomas Stewart, Eileen Grill, and Jennifer Warsop, three great grandchildren, one step great grandchild, two brothers, Joseph (Bernice) Caudy of St. Johns and Vincent Caudy (special friend Gloria), four sisters, Agnes (Victor) Brown of Chelsea, Theresa (Bill) VanWormer of Lansing, Margaret (Peter) Klein and Rose Wilson, all of St. Johns, and two brothers-in-law, John Fox of Lansing and John Kusnier of Elsie. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Fox and Anna Kusnier and one brother, John Caudy. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 14, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Timothy D. Krzyzaniak officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. Military graveside services provided by V.F.W. Post #4113 and American Legion Post #153.

Charlene M. Town

town.jpg (10632 bytes)Age 51 of Ovid, Michigan passed away Monday, July 9, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Her children will officiate. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-9 P.m.

Charlene was born in Owosso, Michigan on March 8, 1950, the daughter of Kenneth & Letha (Pardee) Sexton Sr. She resided most of her life in the Greenville and Ovid areas.

Survivors include two daughters, Buffy & David Lutz of Greenville, MI, and Shandra & Vern Jr. Parks of Bath, MI, two sons, John & Peggy Hill of Arkansas, and Jim & Tracie Hill of Owosso, MI, six grandchildren, seven sisters, Valerie Miersma of DeWitt, MI, Lori Isham of Owosso, MI, Judy George of Chesaning, MI, Lisa Hudacek of Owosso, MI, Helen Honeycutt of Prudenville, MI, Jenny Zwick of Ovid, MI, and Roselyn Pray of Owosso, MI, three brothers, Dan Sexton of Escanaba, MI, Eric Sexton of Elsie, MI, and Kenneth Sexton Jr. Ovid, MI, and close friend and companion, Julius Kisnosky of Ovid, MI. She was predeceased by her parents. Memorials may be made to the family. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Ilene M. Redman

Ilene M. Redman died July 9, 2001 at the age of 75. Born in Clinton County, Michigan July 17, 1925 the daughter of David and Ethel (Sevy) Houseman.  Ilene married Rex Redman August 30, 1944 and he preceded her in death December 8, 1968. 

She is survived by four sons, Gary (Wendy) Redman of Hawaii, David (Mary) Redman of St. Johns, Gregory (Cindy) Redman of Maple Rapids, and Martin (Robin) Redman of Carson City, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three sisters, Lulu Heathman of Mason, Dorothy Carter and Alice Atwood, both of Haslett.  In addition to her husband, Ilene was preceded in death by her son, Joel Redman, four brothers, John, Robert, Lyle and Glen Houseman, and two sisters, Katherine Elsifor and her twin sister, Irene Henry. 

Memorial graveside services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 13, 2001 at Payne Cemetery, Maple Rapids. There will be no visitation or funeral services as Ilene’s wishes were to be cremated. Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall-Johavah’s Witnesses, 1998 N. Lansing St., St. Johns, MI 48879 or the Arthritis Foundation.   Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes.

Chris Brown II

chrisbrown.jpg (11013 bytes)Age 87 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at Carson City Hospital in Carson City.

He was retired from Globe Manufacturing in Owosso and he was a farmer.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 13, 2001 at 2:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor David McGarvey will officiate. Burial will take place at Fairfield Township Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday 7-9 and Thursday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m.

Chris was born in Pasadena, California on September 13, 1913, the son of Chris Paul and Emma (Proctor) Brown. On September 18, 1937 he married Marcella J. Addison in Rochester Colony, Michigan. She died September 17, 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Elsie, Michigan and also a member of Farm Bureau. He resided most of his life in Elsie, Michigan.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula & James Lightfoot of Simi Valley, CA, and Sheila & Wayne Morey of Carland, MI, one son, Carl & Nancy Brown of Elsie, MI, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, one son Chris Paul Brown III, one sister Mildred Bates, and one brother, Lloyd Brown.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Elsie, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Gary Meredith

meredith.jpg (11779 bytes)Gary A. Meredith, 59, of St. Johns passed away July 11, 2001 at his home. He was born Oct. 11, 1941, the son of James and Lena (Evans) Meredith. He lived most of his life in the Ovid and Elsie areas.

He retired from B.O.C. in 1996 after 36-1/2 years. He served in the U.S. Army, was a member of UAW 652, and the National American Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Surviving are his wife, Casilda of St. Johns; one daughter, Tracie (Tom) Bolton of Laingsburg; two grandchildren David and Meredith; two sisters, Virginia (Fred) Brown of Bancroft, and Margaret (Ervin) Rose of Ovid; one brother, Robert (Karen) Meredith of Ovid; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy; two brothers, Donald and Keith.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, July 15, at the Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel with the Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating. Burial will be at Duplain Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Clinton County Animal Shelter.

James D. Ward

James D. Ward died Monday, July 9, 2001 at the age of 65. Born in Benton Harbor September 25, 1935 the son of Howard L. and Leota (Abair) Ward, he served on the Benton Harbor Police Force, was in the Naval Reserve and is a member of the F.O.P. . In the early 1970’s he joined the DNR as a conservation officer in marine safety. He married Sarah Aument McCormick on December 23, 1982  and after his retirement from the DNR they enjoyed traveling, beekeeping and numerous other interests. 

Surviving are his wife Sarah, one daughter Cynthia A. Ward and her husband Michael Barulic, four sons James J. (Kristin) Ward, R. Dillon McCormick, John Q. McCormick, Daniel A. (Molly) McCormick, eight grandchildren, one brother Robert F. (Louise) Ward. 

A memorial service will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 12, 2001 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. Johns with Rev. Howard Simpson officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Lucille M. Ernst

Lucille M. Ernst passed away July 8, 2001at the age of 88.  Born April 13, 1913 in St. Johns, Michigan she was the daughter of Vernie and Mary (Grenlund) Strong and lived most of her life in the Clinton County area. She taught in rural schools for several years followed by three years in the St. Johns School system.  She was a member of the Clinton County Historical Society, Rural Teachers Club, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, the Congregators, and a former member of the First United Methodist Church.  She married John Gallagher and he preceded her in death in 1964.  In 1968 she married Clarence Ernst and he preceded her in death in 1992.  

Survivors are one daughter Mary Pat and her husband Dr. Eugene Hamilton of Saginaw, daughter-in-law  Alice Gallagher of St. Johns, step-daughter-in-law Sally Ernst Stevensville, one granddaughter Maurine Gallagher of Portland, four grandsons, Michael (Sherry) Gallagher of Fowler,  Patrick (Linda) Gallagher of St. Johns, John Hamilton of Washington, DC, Jeff (Linda) Hamilton of Harrisburg, PA, step-grandson Gerald Ernst of Tennessee, nine great grandchildren, one nephew Jack (Marilyn) Buchanan of Florida.   She was also preceded in death by her son Dennis Gallagher, two step-sons Gary and Dennis Ernst, brother Clarence Strong, and sister Therah Buchanan. 

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Carol Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-5 & 7-9 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital.
