Daniel Gorman

Daniel Charles Gorman, 73, of DeWitt, owner of Gormans Food Market since 1953, died peacefully at Hospice House of Mid Michigan July 18, 2001 after a fierce battle with cancer.

All of Dan's family wishes to thank the thousands of friends and loyal customers Dan loved (and fed) in his 48 years operating Gormans Food Market in North Lansing. Dan's greatest satisfactions in his life were raising his six children, watching them grow up, get married, and even bless him wth a few wonderful grandchildren, as well as operating his store for almost half a century.

Although he lost his battle with cancer, he won the challenge of life. We can't know what awaits us on the other side, but we pray that our departed loved ones find comfort and everlasting peace.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Gorman; his children, Marlene (Hal) Somervill, Marilee (Kevin) Potter, James (Debbie), Marilyn (Scott) Dalman, Patrick (Brenda); daughter-in-law, Robin Gorman; grandchildren, Jenny (Jimmy) Schumacher, Heather (Chad) Rogers, Mackenzie Potter, Matthew Gorman, Curt Dalman and LJ and Dalton Gorman. Preceding him to heaven was his first wife of 45 years, Ottilia (Tillie) Gorman, and first-born son, Charles Gorman.

The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice House of Mid Michigan, whose employees helped Dan's final journey be comfortable, gentle and loving.

Patrick Fitzpatrick

If limited to two words, Pat Fitzpatrick's life could be summed up with caring and giving. His wife Joan remembers the many contract jobs performed at little or no cost for people in need. Talking and listening, giving of his time, were other gifts he gave to family and friends.

A 1967 graduate of Plainwell High School, where he played on the wrestling, football and and track teams, Pat joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduation. The Air Force used his skills as a mechanic, and while serving a tour in Vietnam he would even work part time for a private airline.

Oct. 5, 1968, marked the marriage of high school sweethearts, when Pat and Joan Kiewiet married. Accomplished at fixing anything broken Pat had spent 15 years in the DeWitt area as a self-employed contractor.

His family recalls his love of nature, walks in the woods, fishing and sharing time with his dogs, Harley and Taylor, and cat, Bernie.

His family includes his wife, Joan of DeWitt; his nephew, Gordon Kiewiet whom he and Joan raised from the age of eight years; his parents, Mary and Frank Fitzpatrick of Plainwell; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Lucille DeLoach of East Lansing, Jane and Terry Gould of Mebane, N.C., Dan and Carol Fitzpatrick of Holland, Kathe and Doug Ernst of Plainwell, Alice and Darrel Grimm of Battle Creek, John and Sandi Fitzpatrick, Bill and Sheri Fitzpatrick all of Plainwell, Larry Fitzpatrick of Parchment, Ann and Steve Allen of Plainwell, Jim Fitzpatrick of Martin, Aileen and James Sunnock of Hudsonville; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Gordon, Gail and Don and Rhonda Kiewiet; many nieces and nephews.

Pat's life began May 18, 1949; it ended suddenly July 15, 2001, in DeWitt, after a long battle with manic depression.

He was preceded in death by a sister Mary Martha in 1959.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 19 at St. Margaret's Church, Otsego. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society. The family was served by the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel.
