Michael Gene Elliott

Michael Gene Elliott died October 24, 2001 at the age of 46. He was born in Carson City on January 29, 1955, the son of Frederick J. and Frances (Lott) Elliott and lived in Maple Rapids for the last 20 years. He was a truck driver for RSDC in Holt, was a volunteer fire fighter for Maple Rapids Fire Department, a  member of Maple Rapids Bass Anglers and Carson City Masonic Lodge. Michael married Lorraine "Lori" Ramsey in Middleton on April 1, 1978 and she survives him.

Also surviving are daughter, Terra (Stan) Birge, son, Grant (Nicole) Elliott, all of Maple Rapids, seven grandchildren, father, Frederick Elliott of St. Johns, three sisters, Joan Sorrell of New York, Judith Ann (Jim) Troub of Perrinton and Jackie (Tim) Putnam of Mt. Pleasant, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Renee in 1980, mother in 1991, grandson in 1999 and father-in-law, Ronald G. Ramsey in 1992.

Memorial services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 27, 2001 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Maple Rapids, with Rev. Steve Lang officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Country Cares for Kids B93.7.

Mabel Marie Beechem

mabel.jpg (8466 bytes)Mabel Marie Beechem died October 16, 2001 in Deland, Florida.  She lived a very full life in her 90 years and died peacefully and painlessly. Mrs. Beechem was born November 13, 1911 in Cass City, Michigan to Hiram and Nellie (Bryan) Crandell.  She received her B.A. degree with a double major in English and Journalism at Michigan State University in 1933; there she met and subsequently married Henry Albert Beechem on December 24, 1937.   On March 19, 1993 Henry Beechem preceded his wife in death.

In addition to her passion for the political arena, she was an active participant in promoting civil rights. Mrs. Beechem was a business woman and political worker.  She was Associate Editor of the Band Wagon, a women's magazine based in Oklahoma City, 1934-37; VP Beechem Labs, Inc., St. Johns, Mich, 1937-1985; member of Clinton County Board of Education 1957-65; Vice chairman of the Democratic Party of Clinton County, Michigan, 1954-56; member, Michigan Democratic State Central Committee, 1957; delegate to Democratic National Convention in 1960; secretary of Democratic National Farmer's Organization; member of American Association of University Women and a contributor to numerous publications.  The Beechems lived in Chicago, IL; Burlington, Iowa; St. Johns, MI; New Smyrna Beach, FL; and Deland, Florida.  They also resided in a summer home (cottage) in Pentwater, Michigan.  They owned and operated Beechem Laboratories in St. Johns.

The Beechems are survived by three children Katharine, Jane, and Michael as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Joe Kioski

Joe Kioski died October 25, 2001 at the age of 81. He was born in Detroit on July 18, 1920, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Tebol) Kioski and lived in Elsie and Ovid most of his life. He retired from Motor Wheel in 1981, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of V.F.W. Elsie Post, Clinton County D.A.V., and the American Legion. Joe married Dawn Shatto in St. Johns on February 29, 1940 and she survives him.

Also surviving are four sons, Russell (Sally) Kioski, Gary (Connie) Kioski, Mark Kioski, all of Ovid, and Stanley Kioski of Lansing, ten grandchildren, Wade (Marie) Kioski, Julie Kioski, Ryan (Judi) Kioski, Scott Kioski, Chris Kioski, Kelsey Kioski, Tami (Shawn) Stanley, Steven (Aneisia) Kioski and Amanda Kioski, ten great grandchildren, and two sisters, Evon (George) Goscinski of Elsie and Wanda (Albert) Lopez of Houston, TX.

There will be no services or visitation. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County or Ovid Area Ambulance. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Darwin Burton "Burt" Clise

Darwin Burton "Burt" Clise of Bath, Age 58, died October 24, 2001. Born June 3, 1943 the son of Darwin M. and Lura I. (Coleman), who preceded him in death. He was the co-owner of Versi-Tech and a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam.

Surviving are his wife, Rae; daughter, Carrie of Bath; sons, Max of Sault Ste Marie and Alex of Bath; brother, Stewart (Judy) of Bath; sister, Josephine (Carl) Salampaa of Northville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 27, 10 a.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt with the Rev. Nancy L. Besemer, Pastor of Bath United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath with Military services provided by the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association, Memorial Tribute Program, Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678-3968 in memory of Mr. Clise.

Leonard M. Fox

Leonard M. Fox, 73, of Portland passed away Oct. 18, 2001. He was born in Pewamo Sept. 17, 1928 the son of Andrew and Amelia (Blundy) Fox.

Len was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He retired as the manufacturing superintendent of the TRW Portland Plant in 1990. Len was an enthusiastic outdoorsman with a great love for the woods and water. He greatly cherished good times spent with family, friends and neighbors.

Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou (Smith) Fox. Together they successfully raised a family of eight children: Patricia, who preceded him in death in 1973, Peg Fox of Portland, Larry (Deb) Fox of Portland, Janie (Jerome) Schneider of Pewamo, Beth (Mike) Martin of Portland, David (Kim) Fox of Portland, Tom (Krista) Fox of Lowell, and Doug (Angie) Fox of Portland; and 17 much appreciated grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, James Fox of Gladwin; sisters, Joan Schafer of Pewamo, Vonnie Robinson of Lyons, Jeannette Shea of Georgia, and Diane Gardner of Arizona; special long-time friends, Jack Gilbert and Max Fish. He was preceded in death by a brother Steven.

Services were held Oct. 22 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles D. Hall, Pastor, and John Piercefield officiating. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery. Military graveside honors were provided by the VFW Post 4090. Memorials may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice, 117 N. Depot St., Ionia, MI 48846.

Max L. Rivest

Max L. Rivest died October 21, 2001 at the age of 78. He was born in Elsie on September 16, 1923, the son of Russell and Fleetie (Mead) Rivest and lived in Ovid most of his life. He was the director of buildings and grounds for Ovid-Elsie Public Schools, a former member of I.O.O.F. and Ovid/Middlebury Fire Department and a member of Hiawatha Sportsman's Club. Max married Norma Lewis in Elsie on June 18, 1944 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia Rivest of Ovid and Connie Jones of Elsie, two sons, Gary (Debbie) Rivest of Corunna and Barry (Julie) Rivest of Ovid and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Monday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Howard Eugene Hall

Howard Eugene Hall, Bath, Age 67, passed away peacefully at his home on October 20, 2001, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 21, 1934 in Lansing, the son of Fred and Marie (Augue) Hall. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1948, where he proudly served in the choir. Mr. Hall graduated from Eastern High School in 1952, and was a Veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He had been employed at WKAR, Channel 23, for 32 years, retiring in February of 2000.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Virginia (Miller); 2 sons, Mark of Lansing and Phillip (Kristy) of Bath; 3 grandchildren, Cecilea, Andrea and Phillip, Jr.; 2 sisters, Delores (Arnold) O'Brien-Omness of Bradenton, FL and Lois (Harry) Hanson of Lansing; 2 sisters-and brother-in-law, Susan (Norman "Bud") Gill of Montgomery, AL and Jean Anderson of Holt; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2001, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Hospice of Clinton County, Dr. Francis Breen and his staff, and to the 7th floor staff at Sparrow Hospital for their thoughtful care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Clinton County, American Cancer Society, or Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in memory of Howard E. Hall.

Frank L. Worden

worden.jpg (15262 bytes)Age 33 of Bannister, Michigan died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St.Johns. He worked for Stambaugh Masonry Restoration Inc. in Portland, Michigan.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 22, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel with Pastor Larry Howland officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Visitation will be Saturday from 7-9 & Sunday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m.

Frank was born on August 5, 1968 in Owosso, Michigan, the son of Franklin Leo and Beverly Ann (Castel) Worden I. He was a member of Local 1075 Labor Union in Flint, Michigan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and resided most of his life in the Bannister and Ovid area.

Survivors include one son, Franklin Worden of Elsie, two daughters, Haley Ann Marie Worden of Elsie, and Chelsea Nichole Budd of Elsie, grandmother, Mildred Worden of Ovid, four Aunts, Patricia Janes of Bannister, Irma Worden of Bannister, Frances Bashore of Ashley, and Diane Newman of Ovid, a very special friend, Carol Bolf of Laingsburg, best hunting buddies, Tim Milkulka, Tony Rodriguez, & Clay Prikasky.

He was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, Hank & Lillian Castel & Frank Worden, Aunt, Bonnie LaClair, cousin, Paul Janes, and special friend, John Shinabarger.

Memorials may be made to a fund set up for his Children’s Education. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Clarence LeVeck, Sr.

Clarence LeVeck, Sr. of DeWitt, age 74, died October 22, 2001. Born March 30, 1927 in Roger City, Michigan, Mr. LeVeck retired from Conrail as a switchman and also worked for the Lansing State Journal for 23 years. He was an Honorary member of the Clinton County Posse, a member of Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt, American Legion #0379, Military order of the Cootie and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was preceded in death by his son, John D. LeVeck of St. Johns.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Ann; 2 daughters, Mary M. (friend Chuck) Campau and Angela J. (Norman) Jasmund both of Lansing; 7 sons, Clarence, Jr. of Dansville, Richard Dennis (Susan) of St. Johns, Michael D. (friend Wendy) of Dallas, TX, 1st Sargent Kenneth F. (Maria) of Camp Lajune, NC, William D. of DeWitt and Timothy D. (Kelly) of St. Johns; many grandchildren; 1 sister, Marian Harland of Cedar, MI.

Memorial services will be held Friday, October 26, at 11 a.m. at the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, 12550 S. US 27, DeWitt. Those desiring may make contributions to the Breslin Cancer Center, 401 W. Greenlawn, Lansing 48910 in memory of Clarence. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel.

Sarah Belle Benjamin

Sarah Belle Benjamin, of Allen, MI formerly of St. Johns and Quincy, died October 23, 2001 at the age of 93.  She was born in Boyne City, Michigan on March 30, 1908.   Sarah Belle married Olen Benjamin June 14, 1925 and he preceded her in death December 1, 1957. 

She is survived by one daughter, Virginia (Donald) Ball of Quincy, one son, Robert (Theresa) Benjamin of Fort Wayne, IN, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one brother, George Banks, and three sisters, Myrtle Bush, Nettie Glidden, and Dorothy Myers. 

There will be no visitation or funeral services, burial will be at Teeters Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.  The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Lisa D. Abronowitz-Hanks

Lisa D. Abronowitz-Hanks, St. Johns Age 41, passed away on October 19, 2001 after a long illness. She was born on July 1, 1960 in Lansing.

Surviving are parents, Alan (Janet) Abronowitz; 3 brothers, Kyle (Mary Jo) Abronowitz of Haslett, Todd Abronowitz of TX., Dale Abronowitz of Lansing; 2 sisters, Rachael (Juan) DeLeon of Lansing, Wendy (John) Pedersen of MN; 3 children, Joshua Atias, Veronica Hanks, Tommie Marie Hanks, all of St. Johns; along with several nieces and nephews, and long time friend, Dave Dunham of Coldwater.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the following: Sparrow 7th and 8th floor, U of M Critical Care Unit, and Dr. Brovlac for his years of support and compassion.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Women's Wing in memory of Lisa D. Abronowitz-Hanks. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Donna M. Zorici

Donna M. Zorici, DeWitt Born March 31, 1961, in Bronx, NY; died October 18, 2001, at the age of 40. Mrs. Zorici was preceded in death by father, Donald Sherman Sr.

Surviving are her husband, Danny; one daughter, Dionna; one son, Daniel; her mother, Fanny Sherman; and one brother, Donald (Sophia) Sherman Jr., both of DeWitt.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, October 22, at 10 a.m. at Catholic Community of St. Jude, 801 N. Bridge St., DeWitt, with the Rev. Dwight Ezop, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin St., DeWitt, on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
