Edith W. Phelps

edith.jpg (7955 bytes)Age 79 of Ovid, Michigan died Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns, Michigan. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Clyde Isham will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie. Visitation will be Friday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Edith was born in Clinton County, Michigan on June 24, 1922, the daughter of Frank Nelson and Edith Arvilla (Miller) Robinson. She graduated from Elsie High School with the Class of 1941. On April 11, 1940 she married John C. Phelps in Duplain Colony. She was a member of Elsie Baptist Church and taught Girl Scouts years ago. She resided most of her life in the Elsie and Ovid area.

Survivors include her husband, John Clarence Phelps of Ovid, two sons, Arthur Phelps of Carson City, Nevada, and C. John (Nina) Phelps of Ovid, one daughter, Sandra (Lester) Kimmel of Brant, seven grandchildren, Kim Mau & Diane Husted of Brant, Ronda Mau of Brant, Tracie (Ed) Stewart of Ovid, Brad Phelps of Ovid, Ryan (Bridget) Phelps of St. Johns, Darcy (Rich) Otranto of Carson City, and Drew Phelps of Los Angeles, California, great grandchildren, Mike, Kaylee, Kenda & Austin Stewart, Khyra Phelps, Paul Mau, Jason, Eric & Hunter Otranto, also one sister, and brother and sister in laws. She was preceeded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, Frank Robinson, George Robinson, Milo Robinson, and Howard Robinson and 3 sisters, Elizabeth Dunham, Nettie Tobias, and Arvilla Newton and one son-in-law, Ron Mau.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Gary   L. Glazier

Gary  L. Glazier died November 6, 2001 at the age of 70. He was born in Middleton, MI on July 22, 1931, the son of Leal and Bessie (Springer) Glazier and lived in the St. Johns area most of his life. He was a former employee for Paul's Automotive and Bee's Auto Parts and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Gary married Helen Hopko in Newaygo, MI on August 26, 1950 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Christine (Roger) Leavitt and Michele (Leonard) Mabey, all of St. Johns, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister, Colleen Harbinson of Colorado, brother, Marlin (Mary) Glazier of Kansas, several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Barbara Glazier. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Brent Glazier.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Society of Michigan.

Hilda R. Pifer

pifer.jpg (7752 bytes)Age 85 of St. Johns, Michigan died Sunday, November 4, 2001 at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Ray Sundell will officiate with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Hilda was born in Flint, Michigan on May 25, 1916, the daughter of Clarence E. and Ruby (Eschtruth) Hewitt. She graduated from Marion High School with the Class of 1935. On May 25, 1935 she married John E. Pifer in Marion, Michigan. She and her husband moved to St. Johns in 1942.

Survivors include her husband, John E. Pifer of St. Johns, one daughter, Wendy & Tom Brown of California, three sons, Ward Pifer of Florida, Stanley & Shirley Pifer of St. Johns, and Bruce & Sandy Pifer of St. Johns, fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents.

Memorials can be made to the Capital Area Humane Society. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Jack Cederquist

A Celebration of Life memorial service for Jack W. Cederquist, 79, of Bettendorf, was held October 21, 2001 at St. Peter Episcopal Church, Bettendorf.  Private family burial was held in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. He died October 18, 2001 at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, Iowa.

He was born January 5, 1922 in St. Johns to Ralph and Wadea (Nafe) Cederquist.  He married Shirley Owen June 22, 1946 in Grosse Ile.   He retired in 1986 after 25 years in industrial sales at Russell, Burdsall and Ward.  Jack served the community as a volunteer with Bettendorf Recycling Commission, Genesis Hospital Auxiliary, Children's Family Museum and Bettendorf Public Library.   As a member of St. Peter Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry and as a church school teacher.  He served in the Army during World War II and received the bronze star.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Kristan Tobson of Phoenix AZ; a son, John Owen Cederquist of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren, Chelsea and Bryn Robson; a step-granddaughter, Julie Keller; sisters, June Whittaker of Elk Rapids and Mary Alice Smith of Tuscola; and a brother, David Cederquist of East Lansing.

Arrangements were by Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

Genevieve E. Goff

Genevieve E. Goff, Portland, Age 80, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2001. She was born on September 10, 1921 in Riley Township the daughter of Frank and Lena (Martin) Pung. Mrs. Goff was a member St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lewis Pung.

Surviving are her husband, James W. Goff, with whom she married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia on February 14, 1942; children, David Goff, Dennis (Diane) Goff, Frank (Kathy) Goff, Charles (Janie) Goff and Mary (Mathias III) Schueller; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther Nickel, Virginia Mitchell, Gladys Stump, Lucille (Delbert) Bohr, Patricia Snyder, and Helen Trierweiler; brother, Martin Pung; sisters-in-law, Esther Pung and Janet Wawernia; 42 nieces and nephews.

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, Pastor at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Portland Foundation for Public Education or to the Fr. Flohe Foundation, in memory of Genevieve E. Goff. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
