Barbara Kay Lake

lake.jpg (7311 bytes)Age 58 of Elsie, went to be with her precious Lord on Thursday morning, December 13, 2001 at her home, after a very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 15, 2001 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Pastor William Stites will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery, Henderson, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday evening 7-9 and Friday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 and 7-9 P.m.

Barbara was born June 13, 1943 in Durand the daughter of Roy & Tressa (Cramer) Holbrook. She lived in Durand and Corunna most of her life. Barbara worked at American Aerosol, American Record, and Mid-West Abrasives and drove bus for both RESD and S.C.O.A. On November 16, 1984 she and Richard B. Lake were married in Lennon, Michigan. They moved to Elsie in 1994 to retire and continue raising Golden Retrievers at Hilltop Goldens Kennel, which they started in 1985 on Lytle Road in Corunna. Barbara made many precious friends while placing her puppies in caring homes. She also enjoyed her horses, bird watching, gardening and grooming her dogs and caring for many litters of puppies. She was a member of Fenmore Baptist Church in Elsie. In November 2001 Barbara led her family members to the Lord, as she wanted to be reunited with all those she loved in Heaven. Special thanks to Pastor & Mrs. William Stites for they’re continual spiritual support and prayers that were always a comfort to Barbara and her family.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Richard Lake of Elsie, 1 son, James Jay Buff & Amy Frey of Grand Rapids, 5 daughters, Laurie & Fernondo Colon of Owosso, Lisa Garcia of Owosso, Linda Fuller of Henderson, Lana & Paul Peterson of Chesaning, Lea Anne Witt of Henderson, stepchildren, Tim & Mary Lake, Cathy (Gary) Taylor, Michelle Lake, Richard (Rachel) Lake, 25 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, her father, Roy Holbrook of Corunna, sister, Sandie Butcher of Owosso, brother, Dave Holbrook of Owosso, sister in laws, Doris Brady, Debbie (Lenny) Wright, and Connie (John) Blanchett, special Aunt, Maryann Emans, and her beloved Golden companion, Z-Kee. She will be met in Heaven by her mother Tressa & stepson, Bruce Lake.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Healthcare Hospice, Fenmore Baptist Church, or Pan-Can (Pancreatic Cancer Research Network).

Adrian Delbert Huss

huss.jpg (7375 bytes)Adrian Delbert Huss, 78, of Ovid died Dec. 11, 2001. He was born Aug. 31, 1923 in Ashley, the son of Francis Henry and Ruby A. (Bolyard) Huss.

He was a member of United Church of Ovid, and served in the US Army during WW II. He worked for the US Postal service in Ovid, during that time he would deliver his mail once a year riding his horses. He retired in 1981. He also worked for Michigan Milk Producers Association in Ovid.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Rod) McCreery of Ovid and Marie (Butch) Mohre of Lansing; two sons, Adrian Huss of Crystal and Albert (Jean) Huss of Arizona; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Opal Stead of Ithaca, Laura (Ken) Powers of St. Johns, Eleanor (Ken) Blonshine of St. Johns, Arnetta Mills of St. Johns; two brothers, Ernest (Ellen) Huss of St. Johns and Francis (Jim) (Jackie) Huss of Pompeii. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Dec. 14 at Smith Family Funeral Homes with Pastor Rob McPherson officiating.Burial was at Collier Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Relief After Violent Encounter. The family was served by the Smith Family Funeral Homes.

Mary Vaysabel

vaysabel.jpg (9819 bytes)Age 84 of Bannister, Michigan died Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be on Friday, December 14, 2001 at 12:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 and Thursday 2-8 with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.m.

Mary was born in Ashley, Michigan on November 25, 1917 the daughter of Thomas and Rose (Bubela) Sefl. She married Stephen Vaysabel on June 14, 1941 in Elsie, Michigan. He died on December 12, 1984. She was a member of ZCBJ Lodge #225 in Bannister, Michigan. She resided most of her life in the Bannister area. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly (Donald) Kasik of Kalamazoo, Marylyn (Marvin) Gonser of Grandville, three grandchildren, Angie, Don (Shelly), Trina (Tom), four great grandchildren, Mason, Alyssa, Jeremy, and Jacob, one brother, Frank (Theresa) Sefl of Ashley, and one sister, Lillian Bohac of Owosso. She was predeceased by her parents and twin sister, Rose Collins.

Memorials may be made to WOES Radio Station. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Richard E. Miller

Miller-Richard.jpg (9953 bytes)Richard E. Miller died at his home on December 10, 2001, at the age of 73. He was born on the family homestead on Grange Rd. in Fowler on April 28, 1928, the son of Fred and Edith (Feldpausch) Miller. Richard retired from the General Motors paint department in December 1987 after 35 years of service, was a member of U.A.W. Local #652, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Richard married Joanne Martus in St. Johns on October 8, 1949, and she survives him.

Also surviving are four children, Judith Miller of East Lansing, Maureen (Jerome) Warren of Lakeland, FL, Alan (Mindy) Miller of St. Johns and Laura (Ed) Whiteherse of Ovid, honorary daughter, Stephanie (Tim) Idalski of Flushing, eleven grandchildren, Nikki, Dione, Licia, Carrie, Erika, Jacque, Kimmy, Courtney, Joshua, Danielle and Gail, four great grandchildren, Jay, Alexis, Paige and Joshua, four brothers, Fred (Pat) of Lansing, Herman (Kathleen) of Pentwater, Ed (Eveline) of Pewamo and James (Sandra) of White Cloud, two sisters, Theresa (George) Fox of Lansing and Gertrude Schueller of Jenison, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helen Frechen, brother, Carl, brothers-in-law, Earl Frechen and Ronald Schueller, and sisters-in-law, Marie and Kathleen Miller.

Alicia J. Hammond

Hammond-Alicia.jpg (13466 bytes)Alicia J. Hammond died December 9, 2001 at the age of 35. She was born in Spain on March 7, 1966, the daughter of Arthur and Karen (Archer) Craner and lived in Mid-Michigan all of her life. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute with a B.A. in Communications; she served seven years as program director at Camp Barakel and seven years as children's director at Trinity Church. She resigned from ministry work to marry and raise a family, incidentally, her most meaningful ministry of all. She was a homemaker and was a member of Trinity Church in Lansing. Alicia married Thomas Hammond in East Lansing on April 28, 2000 and he survives her.

Also surviving are her infant son, Brian Hammond, parents, Arthur and Karen Craner of Fenton, two sisters, Carla (Paul) Vizzaccaro of Washington Township, MI and Laura (Steve) Legant of Carson City, NV, two brothers, Jason (Danielle) Craner of Ft. Wayne, IN and Pete Craner of Fenton, several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 14, 2001 at Trinity Church, Lansing, with Pastor Ed Short officiating. The family will receive friends 12 Noon-2 P.M. Wednesday and 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Trinity Church Children's Program, Youth For Christ or Camp Barakel.

Linda K. Hufnagel, our loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed quietly at home on Sunday Dec. 9, 2001, at  the age of 60. She was born Jan. 10, 1941 in St. Johns the daughter of Joseph & Hazel (Peck) Plumstead, who preceded her in death.  A 1959 graduate of St. Johns High School, Linda married Gerald Hufnagel on Feb. 24, 1962 in St. Johns.  For many years she was co-chair of the American Red Cross Blood Drives, volunteer for Meals on Wheels and active in many other local volunteer efforts.  Linda had worked for Clinton Memorial Hospital for 15 years and was a partner in the Hufnagel Construction Co. for 30 years.

She will be missed and fondly remembered by her husband Gerald; son Kevin (Yvonne) of Grand Rapids; daughters Lori  (Douglas) Gee of Holland and Debra (Edward) Hallenbeck of St. Johns;

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday Dec. 12, 2001, 10:00 A.M.  at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  A prayer service will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:30 P.M. at Osgood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday evening 7-9 P.M. and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph School Tuition Scholarship Fund, Hospice of Clinton Memorial Hospital or Meals on Wheels.

Richard V. Jacoby

Richard V. (Dick) Jacoby, 88, a 29-year resident of St. Johns, passed away Dec. 7, 2001 at the Heartland Nursing Home, Marietta, Ohio. He was born Aug. 30, 1913 the second of five children of the late George W. and Bertha (Lynch) Jacoby in Wilshire, Van Wert County, Ohio.

He grew up in Vincent, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor degree in commerce. He served in the 20 Army Air Force, 58 Wing 468 Group 793 Squadron during WWII, and was a member of American Legion Post 64. He was a life member and Past Commander of St. Johns, Michigan Commandery #24. He was also a member of the Michigan Past Commanders Association, a 50-year member of Harmar Lodge 390 F & AM, American Union Chapter #1, Marietta Council #78, Elf Khurafeh Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Marietta Shrine Club, and Radiant Chapter #74 Order of the Eastern Star.

He was a past president of the Marietta Junior Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Ohio Valley Management Club, and past president of the Mid-Ohio Valley Traffic Club. He was a former member of the First Congregational Church of St. Johns.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Esther (Wilcox) Jacoby of Ohio; his son, Dr. William D. Jacoby and wife Anne (Ross) of Marietta; two daughters, Ruth Barnes of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Carol (Milton) Webster of North Canton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Hadley Funeral Home, Reno Chapel, Marietta, Dec. 11. The family was served by the Hadley Funeral Home of Ohio.

Alfred C. Kohagen

Alfred C. Kohagen, 88 died Saturday Dec. 8, 2001.  He was born Sept 3, 1913 in Fowler the son of August & Louise (Heiden) Kohagen.  Al served in the U.S. Army during WWII, was a farmer and worked at General Motors, retiring in 1973.  He married Helen Morgan on Aug. 10, 1944 in Bennettsville, Georgia. He was a member of the Fowler V.F.W.

Survivors are his wife Helen; daughters Louise & Robert Antes of Fenwick, MI, Nancy & Louis Forbes-St. Johns and Clara & Bill VanDeusen-Fowler; Sons Frederick & Karen Kohagen-St. Johns, Lesley & Janet Kohagen-Fowler; 15 Grandchildren,  29 Greatgrandchildren, 2 Greatgreatgrandchildren; sister Mrs. Margaret Burnham-St. Johns. He was preceded in death by his parents and two Brothers.

Funeral services will be held at Goerge Chapel-Osgood Funeral Home on Tuesday Dec. 11, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Paul Clark officiating. Burial will follow at East Plains Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.  The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Richard S. "Dick" White

Our beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandpa and friend passed away Dec. 6, 2001, after an eight-year battle with cancer. Richard S. "Dick" White was born in Lansing Michigan Nov. 13, 1936 the son of William and Gertrude (Brown) White.

He retired from General Motors in 1994 after 22 years of working there. Dick enjoyed stock car racing, dog racing, horse racing and spending time with his family. On April 22, 1972 he married his wife and best friend, Mary Beth Diethrich. They resided in St. Johns until 1997 when they bought a place in Florida where they spent the winters and came back to Michigan to visit their family in the summer time.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Beth; a daughter, Nicole (Steve) Harrington of St. Johns; three sons, Richard "Rick" Diethrich of St. Johns, Chuck (Tina) White of Laingsburg, and Kevin (Kim) White of Missouri; three daughters, Shari, Spring and Michelle and 21 grandchildren, four step granddaughters and one great-grandchild; his mother, Gertrude White; sister, Margaret Parks; two brothers, William (Carla) White and Donald (Marlene) White; and a special friend of the family, Heather Harte (Devereaux) all of St. Johns; and a special dog, "Scruffy." He was preceded in death by his father, William White; daughter, Cindy; and brother-in-law, Sam Parks.

Dick was a wonderful caring person and he will be sadly missed by all that knew him and loved him. A time of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m., Dec. 17, at the U.A.W. Hall in St. Johns. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society and the family.
