Chester E. Urie, Sr.

Chester E. Urie, Sr., 81, of Lakeview, met his Heavenly Father Dec. 23, 2001 after a long illness. Chet was born Dec. 29, 1919 in Carson City, the son of John S. and Winnie E. (Davis) Urie.

He served his country in the US Army Air Corp during World War II for 3-1/2 years, spending time in Europe. He was responsible for driving fuel to the front lines. He returned home in November 1945, receiving an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant.

In 1946, he was united in marriage to Ruth A. Foster of Blanchard. To this union were born five children, Anna (Ronald) Showers of St. Johns, Mary Neumeister of Lansing, Chester Jr. (Carol) of Crystal, John (Barb) Urie of Blanchard and James (Deb) Urie of Mason.

After returning from the service, he owned and operated an auto body repair shop in Blanchard. He then moved to DeWitt Township. He worked for Diamond REO, later owning and operating Ideal Well Drilling, drilling water wells.

In 1969, he was united in marriage to Alma (Billington) Heiler. To this union were born two children, Jeannette Urie of Carson City and Roland Urie of Lakeview. After moving to Lakeview in 1977, he continued to operate an Auto Body Repair shop from his home, retiring in 1983.

He leaves to mourn his seven children; two sisters, Doris Rockey and Naomi Sweet; brother, Jack Urie; seven step-children, Larry Heiler, John Heiler, Vesta Harder, Luann Jones, Irene Heiler, Angela Fiely and Theresa Heiler; 24 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma Urie Nov. 14, 2001; sister Francis Sanborn; step-great-granddaughter Caitlyn Larsen.

Services were held Dec. 29, 2001 at the First Church of God, Edmore, with the Rev. Rolla Timmons officiating. Youngman-McCullough Chapel in Lakeview is serving the family.

Kenneth L. Ricks

Kenneth L. Ricks, Bath, born August 3, 1916 in Lansing, died December 17, 2001 in Leesburg, FL at the age of 85. Ken retired from Oldsmobile as a Superintendent of final assembly in 1979 with 38 years of service. He was a member of Bath United Methodist Church, and the Airstream Caravan Travel Club.

He is survived by wife of 60 years, Iva; and daughter, Marilyn (Jonathan) Washington of Lansing; sons, Gary (Margit) Ricks of Grand Ledge, Michael G. Ricks of Denver and special friend, James Roberts; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Eva Dunn of Lansing and Elizabeth Curtis of Dearborn. Brother Edward Ricks of Bath, deceased.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Bath United Methodist Church, 13777 Main Street, Bath, Saturday, December 29 at 12:00 noon, with pastor Nancy Besemer officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to Bath United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 308, Bath, MI 48808 in memory of Kenneth.

Hilda P. Williams

Williams-Hilda.jpg (12416 bytes)Hilda P. Williams died December 22, 2001 at the age of 103. She was born in Parke County, Indiana on November 19, 1898, the daughter of David and Hannah (Hadley) Brown and lived in St. Johns most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church. Hilda married Foster Williams in Parke County, IN on May 29, 1921 and he preceded her in death on April 20, 1994.

Surviving are three sons, Malcolm (Margaret) Williams of Minden City, Howard (Eleanor) Williams of St. Johns and Myron (Maudy) Williams of White Cloud, MI, fourteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and one sister, Kathlyn Scott of Washington Court House, OH.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 24, 2001 at Pilgrim United Methodist Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Ray Sundell officiating. Memorials may be made to Pilgrim United Methodist Missionary Fund. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Robert W. Cole

Born in St. Johns on May 22, 1927, he was the son of Harold and Anna (Cleland) Cole, Sr. and lived in St. Johns all of his life.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post #4113 and American Legion Post #153, retired from Paul Automotive after 35 years, and was a veteran of World War II.  Bob married Alice G. Dilts on June 27, 1953 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are one daughter, Linda George of St. Johns, one son, Dave (Kathleen) Cole of Grandville, four grandchildren, Carly Williams of St. Johns, Melanie George of Key West, FL, Robert W. Cole II & Jessica Cole, both of Grandville, two great grandchildren, Kiana and Austin Williams, and one sister, Connie (Gary) Martin of Millbrae, CA.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Harold, Wayne and Richard Cole, and three sisters, Mildred Klette, Joyce Bushre and Patricia Cole.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Reverend Carol Floyd officiating.   The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan - St. Lawrence. Military graveside services provided by V.F.W. Post #4113 and American Legion Post #153.

Erwin P. Freund

Erwin P. Freund of Pewamo died December 22, 2001 at the age of 91. Born in Westphalia, Michigan on July 28, 1910, the son of Joseph and Julia (Kloeckner) Freund. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo, Knights of Columbus, and the Moose Lodge. Erwin was retired from Chrysler Plant in Lyons. He married Eleanor Fedewa on May 18, 1935 and she preceded him in death December 21, 1996.

Erwin is survived by three sons, Dale (Mary) Freund of Jackson, Roger (Carol) Freund of Pewamo, and Gerald (Sara) Freund of Lyons, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mary Margaret Byelich of DeWitt and Evelyn (Leon) Weiland of Westphalia. Erwin was preceded in death by two grandsons, Joseph and Nicholas Freund, daughter-in-law, Anita Freund, one sister, Catherine Snitgen, and four brothers, Clarence, Joseph, John, and Clifford Freund.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Monday, December 24, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, burial at St. Joseph Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Mary's Chapel in Westphalia with Rosary being prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Education Trust Fund. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns.

Terry Lee Speer

Age 63 of Garner, North Carolina formerly of Clinton County, Michigan died on Monday, December 17, 2001 in North Carolina. He worked for 37 years at Michigan DHIA, and 4 years with Dairy Record Management Systems of NCSU in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Memorial services will be held at Bannister United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 1:00 P.m. Pastor Glenn Litchfield will officiate with burial at Lowe Cemetery, Essex Township, Michigan. After the service there will be a Celebration of Life Party at the American Legion Hall in Elsie, Michigan. There will also be a short visitation Wednesday evening December 26, 2001 at Bannister United Methodist Church from 5-9 P.m.

Terry was born on May 14, 1938. He graduated from Pentwater High School. On October 8, 1960 he married Marilyn F. Dershem at the St. Johns Episcopal Church in St. Johns, Michigan. He was a member of Holland’s United Methodist Church in Garner, North Carolina. He was also a member of United Methodist Men, and a Cub Scout Master for five years. He resided most of his life in Clinton County.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of North Carolina, 1 daughter, April Marie & Robert Marko of North Carolina, 1 son, Thomas Harold & Kathy Speer of Bannister, grandsons, Tyler & Dustin Speer, and Cody & Brandon Price, 1 brother, Kenneth (Kim) & Sue Speer of Muskegon, 3 sister in laws, Margaret & Al McDunnell of Grawn, MI, Nancy & Eugene Dunkel of Zephyerhills, FL, Phyllis & Alan Moore of Bannister, and 1 brother in law, Richard & Sharon Dershem of St. Johns. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy J. Atkinson.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
