Jack Davis

Jack DavisJack H. Davis, 73, of St. Johns, died July 21, 1998. He was born July 21, 1925, in Stronghurst, Ill., the son of Dale and Madge (Henderson) Davis. He had lived in St. Johns since October 1951.

Jack was a retired Postal Service employee. He was a graduate of General Motors Institute of Technology, Flint. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 103rd Infantry.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #153, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He was the tennis coach for the past 12 years for the St. Johns High School junior varsity boys team, and the Ovid-Elsie High School girls varsity team.

Jack married Ruth Schultheiss June 3, 1950, in Louisville, Kent., and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Ann (Norm) Holm of St. Johns, and Sue (Bob) Navratil of Ankeny, Iowa; five grandchildren, Sarah (Shaun) May of Madison, Tenn., Norm Holm Jr., of Lansing, Heidi Holm of Midland, and Joel Navratil and Andrew Navratil, both of Ankeny, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Eleanora (Harold) Meier of Louisville, Kent.

The funeral service was held July 24 at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, or Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Marie Martin

Mrs. Edward V. (Marie Pauline Becker) Martin, 103, passed away July 21, 1998. She was a life-long resident of Fowler; born Dec. 8, 1894, to Frank Becker Sr., and Pauline Platte Becker. She was the widow of Edward V. Martin who preceded her in death in January 1966.

After a search of available records, it is believed Marie was the oldest parishoner of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, and the oldest resident ever to have lived in the village of Fowler. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Marie is survived by two sons, Jerome T. Martin of Lansing, and Gerald F. (Marcella) Martin of Kalamazoo; one sister, Mrs. Loretta (Anthony) Ball of Fowler; one brother, Aloysius (Florence) Becker of St. Johns; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Becker Jr., Edwin, and Alphonsus Becker all of Fowler; sisters, Mrs. Alvina (Victor) Fink of St. Johns, Mrs. Frances (William) Cahill of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Cecelia (Peter) Buwalda of Fowler; daughter-in-law, Esther (Jerome) Martin of Lansing.

The funeral Mass was celebrated July 24 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. Burial was at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Fowler. Memorials may be made to her favorite charity, the Danny Thomas St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1818, Dept. 145, Memphis, Tenn., 38108.

Helen Makara

Helen Makara, 75, of St. Johns, died July 18, 1998. She was born March 20, 1923 in Gratiot County, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Drisko) Makara.

She lived in St. Johns most of her life. She was a graduate of Maple Rapids High School.

She was a beautician, and was retired from Oldsmobile. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was a committee woman for UAW #652. Surviving are one sister, Elizabeth (Frank) Hutchings of Owosso; special friend, John Skapik of St.Johns; brother-in-law, George Gavenda of St. Johns; two sisters-in-law, Alberta Jean Makara, of St. Johns, and Jean Makara of Owosso; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Stephen, Amiel, and John; and four sisters, Pearl, Mary, Anna, and Julia.

The funeral Mass was celebrated July 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev.Fr. Robert Lunsford officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Homes.

Bruce Benton

Bruce W. Benton, 71, of DeWitt, died July 16, 1998. He worked for the state of Michigan as an electrical inspector. Memorial services were held July 19 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Verlin Love

Verlin H. Love, 84, died July 20, 1998. He was a Sciota Township supervisor, and served as a Shiawassee County zoning inspector. The funeral service was held July 23 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Ovid, with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

Caroline Bucholtz

Caroline C. Bucholtz, 86, of St. Johns and formerly of Rochester, N.Y., died July 20, 1998. She was a homemaker, and was active in the Girl Scouts. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home,St. Johns.

Harold Thelen

Harold P. Thelen, 78, of Westphalia, died July 20, 1998. He lived all his life in the Westphalia area. He was a farmer. The funeral Mass was celebrated July 24 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia, with the Rev. Fr. William Ashbaugh officiating. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Fr. Aloysius Miller Memorial Fund.

Charles Marks

Charles W. Marks, 86, of Corunna, died July 21, 1998. He was retired from General Motors AC Sparkplug Division, Flint. The funeral service was held July 24 at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel.
