Alan Dean

Alan R. Dean, 88, of St. Johns, passed away Jan. 24, 1999. He was born June 19, 1910 in McBride, the son of D.W. and Edna (Barton) Dean. He was a graduate of Alma College, and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He was a former teacher and coach at St. Johns High School before establishing Alan R. Dean Hardware in 1945. He remained active in the business until 1998.

Mr. Dean was a 55-year member and past president of the St. Johns Rotary Club. He was past chairman of the Clinton County Republican Committee, Chairman of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Clinton Memorial Hospital, and a member of the St. Johns Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, and a 50-year member of the Clinton County Country Club.

He married Ann R. Becker in 1940, and she preceded him in death in 1989. Surviving are his son, Barry (Ricki) Dean of St. Johns; daughter, Barbara (Edward) Coletta of Muncie, Ind.; grandchildren, Tracey Dean, Jeff Dean, Brant (Karen) Coletta, and Spencer Coletta; brother-in-law, Kurt (Jean) Becker; sister-in-law, Frances Dean; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

The funeral service was held Jan. 27 at the First Congregational Church. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Briggs Library in St. Johns.

David Terpening

David Wayne Terpening, 37, died Jan. 20, 1999. David was born at Westover AFB, MA.

He graduated from Desert High School, Mojave Desert, Calif., and attended Palm Beach Community College, the University of Georgia, and Cornell University. Prior to his being disabled, he was an assistant manager of a large Florida supermarket.

During the past eight years he had five transplant surgeries. Although he was doing very well from his last pancreatic transplant, he succumbed from complications of diabetes Jan. 20, 1999, in Jupiter, Fla.

David is survived by his parents, retired Air Force Colonel Russell Dean and Bobbie Joe, formerely of Owosso and St. Johns; his brother, Russell, of Jacksonville, Fla,; his brother, Steaven, of Grand Prairie, Texas; and his aunt, Juanita B. Terpening of St. Johns, along with many other relatives in Owosso and St. Johns.

Frances Foster

Frances (Saylor) Foster, 76, of Elsie, died Jan. 23, 1999. She was born Jan. 28, 1922 in Brant, the daughter of George and Melvina (Carroll) Easterling. She lived most of her life in the Ashley and Elsie areas. She attended St. Charles Schools. She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars #69, Elsie.

She was married to Earl Saylor Oct. 2, 1939. He preceded her in death July 14, 1975. She married Donald Foster, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley (Fred) Ringle of Ithaca, and Sherry (Larry) Stoneman of Elsie; two sons, Ronnie (Linda) Saylor of Durand, and Tommie (Bessie) Saylor of Gobles; 18 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters,and four brothers.

The funeral service was held Jan. 26 at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, with the Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Clinton County.

Jack Butterworth

Jack E. Butterworth, 60, of St. Johns and formerly of Lowell, died Jan. 22, 1999.

He is survived by his children, Mark (Mary Ellen) Butterworth of California, and Renee Butterworth of Lowell; grandchildren, Nicole, Sean, R.C., Jacob, and one on the way; sisters, Lorene (Giles) Courtney of Grand Rapids, and Gerry (Dick) Rothwell of Rockford; several nices and nephews, and many, many friends.

Mass of the Christian Burial was held Jan. 25 at St. Mary's Church, Lowell, with the Rev. Robert Lunsford as celebrant. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids. Arrangements were made by Roth-Gerst Funeral Home, Lowell.

Edith Woodbury

Edith L. Woodbury, 89, of St. Johns, died Jan. 23, 1999. She was born Aug. 23, 1908 in Clinton County, the daughter of Oramel and Grace (Sutton) Lyon. She retired to Chippewa Lake before moving back to St. Johns in 1998.

Edith was a homemaker, and a former member of Grove Bible Church. She married Walter Woodbury April 8, 1928, and he survives her. Also surviving are two daughters, Virginia Woodbury and Ida (Francis) Wilson; two grandsons, Thomas (Raenell) Wilson and Dennis (Krys) Wilson, all of St. Johns; five great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Lyon, and one sister, Dorothy.

The funeral service was held Jan. 26 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with the Rev. Robert Prange officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Josephine Syers

Josephine Syers, 59, of Ovid, died Jan. 24, 1999. She lived in the Ovid-Elsie area most of her life. The funeral service was held Jan. 27 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with the Rev. Robert Magee officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Helen Bradley

Helen V. Bradley, 81, of St. Johns, died Jan. 21, 1999. She was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School, and was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan. The funeral service was held Jan. 25 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with Pastor Joe Spackman officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery.
