Ila Andrews Ila M. Andrews, 89, of Ionia, passed away May 12, 1999. She was born in Ionia on Sept. 15, 1909, the daughter of Glenn and Edith (Bemis) Thorp, and lived most of her life in Ionia. She attended Davenport Business College in Grand Rapids where she met Albert E. Andrews whom she married in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1970. Ila worked for over 33 years at Ionia County Memorial Hospital, and was a former volunteer for Hospice and Commission on Aging. She was a beloved mother and is survived by her six children: Ronald (Marcia) Andrews and Sister Marcia Andrews of Ionia, Kathleen (John) Smith of St. Johns, Robert (Carol) Andrews of Carlisle, Mass., Mary Andrews of Miami, Fla., and Barbara Andrews of Plainsboro, N.J. She is also survived by one niece, Sandra (Dwight) Whipple of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation was held May 14 at Cook Funeral Home in Ionia from 2 to 4 p.m., and at SS Peter & Paul Church from 6 to 7 pm. The Vigil of Remembering was held following the Friday evening visitation. Funeral services were held May 15 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church Ft. Melvin Fox officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Ionia County Memorial Hospital or Hospice. John A. Surik, 86, of Ovid, died May 7, 1999. He was born Feb. 24, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Dominic and Rose (Polakovic) Surik. He lived most of his life in the Bannister and Ovid areas. Mr. Surik was a dairy farmer, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid; Jednota, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, and Swartz Creek Friendship Club. He married Frances Marie Zubek Aug. 17, 1935 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Owosso. She preceded him in death Jan. 12, 1994. Surviving are dear friend and companion, Margaret White of Ovid; two daughters, Virginia (Andrew) Hatta of Ovid, and Sylvia (Donald) Nightengale of Ovid; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Code of Oklahoma, and Mary Fabus of Elsie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Agnes and Rose. The Mass of Christian Burial was held May 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. George Michalek officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. Arrangements were by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church. Richard Albert Bush, 89, of Owosso, died May 9, 1999. He was a roofing contractor. The funeral service was held May 12 at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel.
