Maynard J. Barrett, 72, of St. Johns, died June 6, 1999. He was born Feb. 21, 1999 in Gratiot County, the son of Bernard and Ruth (Boatwright) Barrett. He lived most of his life in the St. Johns area. He was a retired maintenance employee of Clinton County. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Maynard married Shirley Hall June 19, 1949 in St. Johns and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Doug) Worrall, and Rebecca (Dennis) Worrall of St. Johns; three sons, Jeff (Deb) Barrett, Bernard (Lisa) Barrett, all of St. Johns, and Michael (Carol) Barrett of Mio, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Carole Turner of Pennsylvania, and Mona Lee Brown of Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Donna Harris; and three brothers, Robert, Milton, and his twin, Max. The funeral Mass was celebrated June 9 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Robert Lunsford officiating. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns. James A. Abel, of St. Johns and formerly of Remus, died June 3, 1999. He was born April 16, 1940, in Remus, the son of Herman and Ruth Abel. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Remus for most of his life, as well as the Knights of Columbus in Remus. For the past few years he attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, and was an active member of Mary, Queen of Peace Prayer Group at St. Joseph. He will be sadly missed by his family and many dear friends who treasure his memory. Surviving are his loving wife, Susan, and step-children, Steven (Cynthia) O'Neill, Susan K. Furman, Michael Tressell, Mark (Dee) Tressell, William (Mary) Tressell, Gary (Diane) Tressell, Richard (Donna) Tressell, Robert (Freda) Tressell, and Frances (William) Wright; and step-grandchildren; his dear sisters and brothers, Jerry (Corrine) Abel, Fred (Peggy) Abel, Martha (Max) Bott, Mary (Henry) Wojcik, Joan (Michael) Carmody, and David (Joan) Abel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Kenneth. The funeral Mass was celebrated June 7 at St. Michael's Parish, Remus, with Msgr. Robert Lunsford and the Rev. Fr. Bill Zink officiating. Burial was at St. Michael's Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, or the education fund at either St. Michael's or St. Joseph Church. Oliver 'Ollie' Kenneth Castner, 79, of Harrison, passed away peacefully at his home June 3, 1999. He was born June 7, 1919 in St. Johns, the son of Lewis W. and Elenora (Kaiser) Castner. Ollie was a World War II veteran. Returning from the war, he worked for the City of St. Johns. He retired from Oldsmobile (Main Plant) in Lansing after 31 years of dedicated service. He was a supervisor of the "yard gang." Ollie was married July 31, 1971 to Bonita Schmidt. He was a member of the VFW Post 1075 in Harrison, American Legion Post 404 in Harrison, Clare County 40 ET 8, Voiture 767, Knights of Columbus Council 7571 of Harrison, and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 2235 of Harrison. Ollie was very active in the Neighborhood Youth Watch. You could find Ollie and Alex (his canine friend) driving around helping to protect Piney Woods. Surviving Ollie is his beloved wife, Bonita, of Harrison; four daughters, Janice (Rodney) Smith of St. Johns, Linda (Randy) Heckla of Harrison, Judy (Felix) Malinowski of Grosse Point Woods, and Donna Jo (Jeff) Deters of Oak Park; one son, Thomas (Marcia) Schmidt of Hesperia; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; Alex, his canine friend; sister-in-law, Emmogene Castner of St. Johns; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Arthur J. Castner. The funeral Mass was celebrated June 7 at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Harrison, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Fillion officiating. Burial was at St. Athanasius Cemetery. The Vigil for the Deceased was held June 6 at Stocking Funeral Home, Harrison, under the direction of Sis. Roslyn Nowak. Memorials may be made to Mid Michigan Hospice and VNA. Joyce E. Grimes, 77, of Owosso, died June 5, 1999. She was a retired nurse at Hurley Medical Center, Flint. Memorial services were held June 8 at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Oliver Arthur "Slim" Gilson, 73, of Laingsburg, died June 9, 1999. He was born April 1, 1926, in St. Johns, the son of Clarence and Sophie (Muller) Gilson. He lived most of his life in Laingsburg. He attended St. Johns Schools, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Fisher Body, and was self-employed with Gilson Small Engine Repair. He was married to Dorothy Wreggelsworth Oct. 27, 1952 in Fremont, Ind., and she survives him. Also surviving are his children, Debra (Jonathan) Sorenson of Portland, David (Kathy) Gilson of Laingsburg, Dawn (Paul) Smallone of Ann Arbor, Darlene Gilson of Laingsburg, and Denise Gilson of DeWitt; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Clare Gilson. The funeral service was held June 12 at Nelson-House Funeral Home, Laingsburg, with the Rev. Ed Wilder officiating. Burial was at Laingsburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Ralph C. Chapin, 81, of Corunna, died June 8, 1999. He practicted dentistry in Corunna for 44 years. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., June 14, at Smith Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Eugene A. Dutton, 73, of Maple Rapids, died June 9, 1999. He was a veteran, and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alma and the VFW Post 3733. The funeral service was held June 12 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, with Pastor Charlie Furnam and the Rev. Fr. Dave Parsh officiating. Burial was at East Plains Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Marlene D. Brenner, 41, of Perrinton, died June 9, 1999. She was a member of Hope Bible Baptist Church, Maple Rapids, and UAW Local 652, having worked at General Motors in skilled trades for 17 years. The funeral service was held June 12 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, with Pastor Steven Lang officiating. Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
