Edith Walling, 96, died July 22, 1999. She was born April 1, 1903 in Whitehall, Ill., the daughter of Robert and Clara (Chin) Scoggins. Edith was a graduate of Central Michigan University. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Friends of the Library, past president of the Women's Club, member of Radiant Chapter #79 OES, former member of the MEA and NEA, and a 4-H leader. She was a long-time teacher in the county and St. Johns school systems. Her marriage of 66 years to Marion Walling ended with his death June 9, 1991. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia (Fred) Ditto of Sun City, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Elaine Ditto of Whittman, Ariz., and Deborah Braseth of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Georgie Scoggins of Shreveport, La., and Lorraine Scoggins of Albion. She was preceded in death by one daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Don Tatroe, and three grandsons; three brothers, Carson, Ross, and Alan Scoggins; and one sister, Genevieve Gilson. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 7, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church; Briggs Library; or Pilgrim Manor Building Fund, 200 Leonard St., N.E., Grand Rapids, Mich., 49505. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home. K. Nadine Hurst, 70, died July 29, 1999. She was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Middlebury Township, the daughter of William and Beulah (Jackson) Daniher. She lived most of her life in the Ovid and St. Johns areas. She was a former Federal Mogul and GTE employee. She worked most recently as a greeter at Wal-Mart. She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She graduated in 1946 from Ovid High School. Nadine married Clyde Hurst Oct. 20, 1956 in Owosso, and he survives her. Also surviving are one daughter, Lisa Hurst (Steve Raymor) of St. Johns; one son, Patrick (Sandra) Hurst of Caro; three grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, and Sean Hurst; two great-grandsons, Jordan and Peyton; one sister, Patricia (Dale) Serviss of Ovid; three brothers, William Daniher of Roscommon, Robert Daniher (Joan Kukla) of Stanton, and Lee (Karen) Daniher of Washington; sister-in-law, Judy Daniher of Bancroft; many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Esther Jane Rutter of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jim Daniher; one sister, June Clock; and one granddaughter, Casey Lane Mathes. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Aug. 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns with the Rev. Fr. Timothy Krzyzaniak officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Aug. 1, at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan Sunroom Fund. Hazel Marie Skriba, 82, of Owosso, died July 27, 1999. She was a loan officer at First Interstate Bank of Arizona, Tempe, Ariz. Mass of Christian Burial was held July 31 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Owosso. Arrangements were made by Smith Funeral Home, St. Johns. Pamla Jo Decker-Hermann, 37, of Ashley, died July 23, 1999. She was a research scientist. The funeral service was held July 26 at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns. Carolyn VanDyke, 57, of Kimball, died July 24 1999. She was a homemaker. The funeral service was held July 27 at Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns. Casilda Mary Ann Flanner, 79, of Elsie, died July 24, 1999. She was a homemaker. The funeral service was held July 28 at Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Clare E. Floate, 90, of Maple Rapids, died July 22, 1999. He was born April 11, 1909 in Detroit, the son of Bert and Susie (Heibeck) Floate. He lived most of his life in Maple Rapids. He was retired from Lundberg Screw Company. He was a former member of the Maple Rapids Village Council, a volunteer fireman, and a member of the Maple Rapids Congregational Christian Church. Clare married Maxine Smith July 31, 1929. She preceded him in death July 28, 1984. He married Doris Carr Sept. 14, 1988, and she survives him.Also surviving are one daughter, Liane Tyler of Maple Rapids; two sons, Lyle (Marge) Floate of Maple Rapids, and Larry (Virgilene) Float of Roscommon; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; two step-children, Gerald (Rita) Carr of Ohio, and Dennis Carr of Georgia; and two sisters-in-law, Madelyn Warren of St. Johns, and Mable Chapman of Alma. The funeral service was held July 24 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Maple Rapids. Burial was at Sowle Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Maple Rapids Congregational Christian Church. |
