Wirth Herman E. Wirth, 84, of Westphalia, passed away Aug. 27, 1999. He was born Dec. 14, 1914 in Riley Township, the son of Arthur and Clara (Wieber) Wirth. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a charter and Legion of Honor member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a member of the St. Joseph Society and Men's Club. He was a farmer and retired from Mathews Elevator Company. He married Clara Schmitt May 7, 1941, in Westphalia. He is survived by his wife, Clara; four daughters, Diane (Larry) Kohagen, Donna (Leon) Schafer, Darlene (Maurice) Schmitz, all of Fowler, and Daria (Joseph) Thelen of Westphalia; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Julius of Lansing, Charles and Anthony, both of Westphalia; two sisters, Rosalyn Spitzley and Agnes Wirth, both of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons and a grandson; three brothers, William, Louis and Robert; and two sisters, Antionette Ondrus and Esther Schafer. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 31 at St. Mary's Church with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Fr. Miller Educational Trust Fund. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.
Charles H. Johnson, 53, of Ovid, passed away Aug. 29, 1999. He was born in Detroit on July 31, 1946, the son of Audi and Emily (Nelson) Johnson. He lived most of his life in Ovid. He retired from B.O.C. in 1991. He was a member of the Elsie American Legion Post 502, and was a 1964 graduate of Ovid High School. He married Suzanne Grubaugh Dec. 24, 1991, in Las Vegas, Nev., and she survives him. Also surviving are one son, Lyle Perrien, Jr.; one daughter, Chara Johnson; one stepson, Jeremy Price, all of Ovid; two brothers, Jack Johnson and Terry Johnson of Ovid. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. The funeral service was held Sept. 1 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Burial was at Middlebury Cemetery with Pastor Robert Magee officiating. Military graveside services were provided by American Legion Post 502. Memorials may be made to the children. Arrangements were made by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns Chapel.
William D. Pickering, 81, of Ovid, passed away Aug. 30, 1999. He was a retired Decorating Contractor. There were no funeral services. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ovid. Arrangements were made by Smith Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
Edwin J. Hustin, 68, of Elsie, died Sept. 4, 1999. He was born in Elsie, May 5, 1931 the son of Glen and Leona (Skutt) Hustin. He served in the US Army and was wounded in Korea. He was a member of the VFW Post 9455, Owosso, American Legion Post 502, Elsie and a member of D.A.V. He retired from General Motors, Oldsmobile Division, in 1987. He married Kathie Courtney Jan. 26, 1963, in Midland, and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Angela Gehringer of Ovid and Sandra (Daniel) Grubaugh of Elsie; one son, Anthony (LuCinda) Hustin of Palmdale, Calif.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Farnon of Lake Odessa; three brothers, Robert Hustin and Jerry Hustin both of Middleton, and Glen Hustin, Jr. of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Scott A. Hustin; and two sisters. Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Smith Funeral Home in Elsie. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital.
Charles "Bud" Anderson, 70, of Lansing, died Sept. 5, 1999. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the Clinton County Sheriff's Posse and a retired Deputy of Clinton County. He was a former Chief of Police with the City of DeWitt, a volunteer with the DeWitt City Fire Department, and an avid bluegrass musician. Surviving are his wife Nancy; three sons, Robert (Donna) Anderson of Lansing, Terry (Julie) Anderson of Lake City, and Eric Anderson of Lansing; two step-children, Eric Ward of Spring Lake and Robin (Bruce) Rogers of Morrice; six grandchildren; one sister, Goldie (Farley) Bouts of Lansing; brothers and sisters-in-law, David (LaVerne) Ray and Mary Lindner of Arizona; Paul (Jan) Ray of Owosso; and Michael (Sue) Ray of Texas. He was preceded in death by his step-son, Scott Ward. Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel with the Rev. Joseph F. Egre, retired Assembly of God minister in St. Johns, officiating. Burial was at Gunnisonville Cemetery, DeWitt Township, with military graveside services provided by the V.F.W. Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671, DeWitt.
Helen Margaret Hiller, 89, of Clare and formerly of St. Johns, died Sept. 5, 1999. She had been a resident at the North Woods Nursing Center since Dec. 1, 1994. She was born March, 26, 1910 in Greenbush Township the daughter of Raymond and Edah (Silvernail) Tompkins. She attended the Richmond School and graduated from Detroit Northeastern High School in 1928. In 1953 she decided to become a teacher and she enrolled in college. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1960 and her master's degree in 1963. She retired from teaching in June of 1975. She attended Greenbush United Methodist Church, was a member of the Ovid Literacy Club, the Clinton County Historical Society, the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War and the M.E.A. She loved to sew, knit, crochet, work on craft projects, genealogy, traveling and visiting her family. She married Lawrence Hiller May 12, 1933 in Grand Rapids. He preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1975. Surviving is one son, John (Donna) Hiller of Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Judith O'Neil of Clare; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Powers of St. Johns; son-in-law, Edward Horwath of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan; two granddaughters and one great-great grandson; three brothers, Richard, Lyle and Robert Tompkins. Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at the Osgood Funeral Home. Burial was at Eureka Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. Memorials may be made to the Greenbush United Methodist Church or the Clare Area Scholarship Association.
Isabelle C. Meinke, 86, of Maple Rapids, died Sept. 4, 1999. She was born Dec. 20, 1912 in Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Avery) Miller. She was a member of the Maple Rapids United Methodist Church. Her marriage to Richard Meinke Aug. 1, 1936 ended with his death May 20, 1981. Surviving are one daughter Barbara (Larry) Knight of St. Johns; one grandson William (Joni) Knight of Perrinton; two great-grandchildren, Sara Jo and Jacob Knight; one brother Gordon (Jeanne) Miller of Florida; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Miller of Clinton Township and Dorothy (Bob) Wisner of Farmington; adopted family, Judy Babin, and her three sons, Earl Wayne, Daryl, and Richard of Maryville, La. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lori Jo Knight, and two brothers, Albert and Bruce Miller. Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids. Burial was at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy with the Rev. Charles Farnum officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association.
John Foss, 70, of Orlando, Fla., and formerly of Maple Rapids, died Aug. 24, 1999 in Florida. He was born March 28, 1929, the son of Vernon and Ava (Fuller) Foss. Surviving are two daughters Lavinia (Edson) Carey and family of Birch Run, and Coral (Greg) Snellenburger and family of Clio; brothers, Philip of Dowling Lake, and Vernon of Eaton Rapids; sisters, Donna Olney of Manton and Jacqueline Huss of Ashley. He was preceded by his parents and one sister. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sept. 19, at Sowles Cemetery.
Robert A. Powell, 71, of Corunna and formerly of Flint, died Sept. 8, 1999. He retired from GM Fisher Body in Flint. Memorial services were held Sept. 10 at Smith Funeral Home, Corunna Chapel. |
