Geraldine Greene

Sr. Agnes Simmon, OP

Sister Agnes Simmon passed away Oct. 11, 1999 at the age of 83 at St. Luke's Hospital in Racine, Wisconsin.  She was born to William and Aurelia (Martin) Simmon on Nov. 16, 1916 in Fowler and served at St. Joseph Parish in St. Johns for several years.

Funeral services will be held a the Dominican Convent House in Racine, Wisconsin.

Beverly Nelson

Beverly A. Nelson, 63, of Bannister, passed away Oct. 7, 1999. She was born in Ashley Dec. 12, 1935, the daughter of Merl and Blanch Kerr.

She was a warm and loving mother and person. She gave her whole life to taking care of her family and others, putting herself last. She was looking forward to seeing her first great-grandchild due in May 2000. She will be missed by all of us.

She married LeRoy Nelson in Ithaca Dec. 19, 1953.

She is survived by her husband, LeRoy; two daughters, Trudy (Joe) Palus of Elsie and Vicky Nelson of Grand Rapids; two sons, Sandy (Shauna) Nelson of Ovid and Marty (Kelly) Nelson of Mt. Pleasant; 22 grandchildren; one brother Richard (Mary Jane) Kerr of St. Johns; and one sister-in-law, Loretta (Dave) Cotter of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son,Randy; and one nephew.

Funeral services were Oct. 11 at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca with Pastor Merlin Pratt officiating. Burial was at North Star Cemetery.

 

Grace Speerbrecker

Grace Marie (Small) Speerbrecker, 9, of DeWitt, passed away Oct. 10, 1999. She was born Oct. 17, 1989 in St. Johns and had lived all of her life in Riley Township. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her parents, Stephen and Karen Speerbrecker of DeWitt, and one sister, Tracy Speerbrecker; grandparents Gale and Mary VanBurger of Coldwater, and Ken and the late Dorothy Speerbrecker of DeWitt; great -grandmother, Hazel VanBurger of Ft. Pierce, Fla., many aunts and uncles.

Funeral service were Oct. 13 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, burial at St. Peter Cemetery with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. Memorials may be made to the Childrens' Miracle Network. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns.

 

Harold Carroll

Harold F. Carroll, 77, of Bakersfield, Calif., passed away Oct. 9, 1999. He was born April 7, 1922 in Marion, Ind.

He graduated from Holt High School in 1939. He was a Veteran of WWII, and retired from the Army Corp of Engineering after 34 years of service. He retired from the California State Department of Transportation as a highway engineer after 35 years. He was an avid bowler.

Surviving are one daughter Maureen (Arthur) Shank of DeWitt; three grandsons, Arthur II "Chip" (Sheri) of Mason, Adam and Aaron both of DeWitt; one brother, Jack of Texas; half-brother, Russell Curnutt of Indiana; half-sister, Mary Ferrall of Indiana; several nieces and nephews and many special friends that meet at Cindy's Restaurant in Bakerfield, Calif.

Funeral services were Oct. 16 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Tad Jameson, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt with military graveside services provided by the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt.

 

Dorothy Lidle

Dorothy Mae Lidle, 73, of Owosso, formerly of Elsie, passed away Oct. 9, 1999. She retired from Universal Products in Owosso.

Funeral services were Oct. 12 at the Elsie United Methodist Church. The family was served by the Smith Funeral Home.

 

Owen Gokee

Owen Gokee, 74, of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away Oct. 12. He was a quality control inspector from General Motors. Funeral services were Oct. 15 at Smith Funeral Home, Corunna Chapel.

Michael J. Loeb

Michael J. Loeb, 37, of Houston, Texas, and formerly of Grand Ledge, passed away Oct. 12, 1999, in Houston after a courageous battle with lymphoma.

Mike was born Feb. 21, 1962 in Lansing, the first son of Barbara (Rabbai) and Simeon Loeb. Prior to his recent move to Texas, he lived in the Grand Ledge area. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1980, attended Lansing Community College, and was employed by Story Oldsmobile for 19 years.

Mike had many talents for which he'll fondly be remembered including his remarkable abilities in automotive repair, wood working, hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and home renovations. He was a generous person, always making time to help a friend or family member. Mike was a dedicated husband to Pamela (Porter) and devoted father to his cherished daughter, Samantha.

He is sadly missed by his immediate family, wife Pamela; daughter, Samantha; parents, Simeon "Sam" and Barbara Loeb of Grand Ledge; sisters, Teresa (Christopher) Manning of St. Johns, Lisa (Patrick) Malloy, and Deanna Loeb of Grand Ledge; brother, Patrick "P.J." Loeb of Lansing; as well as his extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and mother and father-in-law.

A memorial mass was Oct. 16 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Grand Ledge. Committal services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Contributions may be made to Samantha Loeb's Trust Fund, c/o Teresa Loeb Manning, 4290 S. DeWitt Road, St. Johns, Mich., 48879.

 

Geraldine Greene

Geraldine C. Greene, formerly Geraldine C. Smelling, 89, of Pleasanton, Calif., passed away Oct. 10, 1999. She was born in Fowler.

She was career educator in the Lansing School District for 25 years until she retired in 1975. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Jack Greene, and two sons, Jack Wallace Greene and Thomas William Greene.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Thomas Green of Pleasanton, Calif., and Robert Charles Greene of Atlanta, Ga., nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Oct. 23 at the Mt. Rest Mausoleum with the Rev. Steven Weinberger officiating. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home.
