Brown Howard W. Brown, 82, of St. Johns, passed away Oct. 28, 1999. He was born in Clare Co. Sept. 26, 1917, the son of Lewis and Charlotte (Hunt) Brown. He retired from Skilled Trades at General Motors in 1975 after 34 years of service. He was a member of Grove Bible Church and U.A.W. Local #1618. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and enjoyed being a greeter with Lonnie Engle at Grove Bible Church. He married Virginia Thayer July 20, 1940 and she survives him. Also surviving are one daughter, Linda Brown of DeWitt, three sons, Larry (Martha) Brown, William "Bill" (Charlene) Brown, both of St. Johns, and Richard (Kathy) Brown of Lansing; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie "Carl" (Peggy) Brown of Gladwin; and one sister Shirley Thompson of Coleman. He was preceded in death by two infant great-grandsons; three brothers Ralph, Ray, and L.G. Brown; and three sisters, Beatrice Cramer, Viola Corder and Leona Rolland. Funeral services are Monday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with Pastor Robert Prange and Pastor Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Kenneth S. McDiarmid, 89, of Higgins Lake, passed away Oct. 27, 1999. He was born in Chicago, Ill., March 16, 1910 the son of Ambrose and Minnie (Matheson) McDiarmid. He was a truck driver for Cadillac Motor Car. Co. for 37 1/2 years retiring in 1972. He was a member of UAW Local #22 Detroit. He had lived in Higgins Lake since 1974 coming from Westland, and lived in St. Johns from 1920-1936. He married Susie Orweller Aug. 26, 1927 in St. Johns, and she survives him. Also surviving are two children, Harold (Margaret) McDiarmid of Roscommon and Roberta Poynter of Howell; daughter-in-law Phyllis McDiarmid of Romulus; 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Pettit of Grand Rapids and Elinor Gallant of St. Johns; three brothers, Neil (Edith) McDiarmid of Crystal, Bruce (Edna) of Ovid, and Allan (Dorothy) McDiarmid of St. Johns. Funeral services were Oct. 30 at Steuernol and McLaren Funeral Home, Roscommon, burial at Gerrish Township Cemetery with Pastor David E. Hansen officiating. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, Roscommon County Unit. Richard E. Brzak Jr., 31 of Ashley, passed away Oct. 25, 1999. He was born Feb. 19, 1969 in Barstow, Calif., the son of Richard and Linda (Mason) Brzak. He resided most his life in the Ashley area. He graduated from Ashley High School in 1986. He was a salesman for Packer Motors in Alma. He married Sherry Lynn Felton July 30, 1994, in Ithaca, and she survives him. Also surviving are three sons Brandon Brzak of Ithaca, Dylan and Ryan Brzak, both at home; his parents Richard and Linda Brzak of Ashley; two brothers, Matthew Brzak and Kristopher Brzak, both of Ashley; grandmother Helen Mason of Ashley; mother-in-law Joyce Felton and father-in-law Walt Felton of Ashley. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Joe Brzak and Homer Mason; and a grandmother, Flossie Brzak. Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at Smith Funeral Home, Elsie Chapel, burial at North Star Cemetery in North Star with Rev. Joe Pendleton officiating. Memorials may be made to his family for his children's education.
Jack L. Huffman, 61, of Vernon, passed away Oct. 24, 1999. Funeral services were Oct. 28 at Smith Funeral Home, Corunna Chapel.
Mary Arlene (Lowe) Lounds, 69, went to be with her Lord and Savior Oct. 26, 1999. The oldest child of Vernon and Irma (Giffels) Lowe, she was born Feb. 10, 1930 in Lansing, and lived in Bath until after graduating from high school in 1947. The last three years of her life she dedicated her time and energy to the St. Vincent DePaul store in St. Johns. She was a retiree of the State of Michigan, last working at Clinton County D.D.S. where she was a caseworker for 18 years. She was an avid genealogist, past president of both the Clinton County Historical Society and of the Genealogists. She belonged to the General Federation of Women's Clubs-St. Johns Chapter, Ladies Aux. to V.F.W. Post #4113, and to the St. Joseph Catholic Church serving on the pastoral council as Coordinator of Social Ministries. She was coordinator and teacher of Befriender Ministry and served as a Eucharistic minister. She was past president of St. Joseph's Rosary and Altar Society belonging to St. Patricia's Guild. She was a teacher's aide at St. Joseph's School, working in her daughter Linda's classroom. She was a free-lance writer, having been published in several magazines, including Michigan History and Heritage Quest. She wrote a column for the local papers called "Genealogically Speaking." She was known in the clown world as "Maggie, the Bag Lady" and also portrayed "Grandma Mabel" in teaching local history. She married Alfred John Lounds at St. Thomas Acquinas Church in East Lansing Sept. 18, 1948. They lived in Lansing until late 1960, and have lived in the St. Johns area ever since. She is survived by her husband, Alfred; two daughters, Linda (Jim) Kurncz and Laurie (Earl) Flegler, both of St. Johns; five sons, Sid (Sue) Lounds, Greg (Julie) Lounds, all of St. Johns, Cal (Mary Jo) Lounds of Mason, Rod (Ellen) Lounds of Grand Blanc, Ken (Susan) Lounds of Berkley; 29 grandchildren; and the special family of Muoi Tu, Minh (Susan) Hoac and Chau (Tam) Pham. Also surviving are four sisters, Lucille (Dick) Braman of Homer, Bernadine Jubb of Bath, Florence (Dale) Platte of Vermontvillle and Terese (Dave) Braman of Grand Ledge; three brothers, Tom (Chris) Lowe of Lyons, Bob (Mary) Lowe of Williamston and Bernard (Cheryl) Lowe of Bath; and one sister-in-law, Lois Lowe of Portland. She had a special cousin, Fern Frisbie of Grand Ledge and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Lowe, and Tau Hoac. She loved her family, including her husband's brothers and sisters and their families. She loved life and had a wonderful sense of humor. She appreciated beauty and nature. She loved to study and to learn, but she loved the Lord most of all. Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial in Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Timothy Krzyzaniak and Rev. Msgr. Robert Lunsford con-celebrating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, Hospice of Clinton County or the American Cancer Society. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home. |
