Harry B. Carpenter, Jr.Harry B. Carpenter, Jr. died December 22, 2000 at the age of 80. Born in Bingham Township, Michigan June 28, 1920 the son of Harry B. and Mary L. (Hoerner) Carpenter, Sr. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Air Force. Harry was a member of the U.A.W. having been a retired inspector from General Motors. Harry married Maxine Marble in June 26,1948 and she survives him. Also surviving is a son, Chad (Susan) Carpenter, stepdaughter, Judi Lee, two grandchildren, Travis and Casey Carpenter, all of Alaska, one brother, Douglas (Alice) Carpenter of Lansing, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by a daughter, Loah Lane Carpenter, one sister, Bette Cummings, and two brothers, Merrill Fred Carpenter and Rexford Jack Carpenter. There will be no visitation. Private family graveside services will be held at
Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. Memorials may be made to National Kidney Foundation.
Mary J. KuhnsMary J. Kuhns, 79, of Kalkaska, died Dec. 20, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Kuhns lived in Fife Lake until three years ago when she moved to Kalkaska to make her home with her son and family. She was an antique dealer for many years, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and affiliated with the Fife Lake United Methodist Church. Born in Ashley Dec. 14, 1921, she was the daughter of James and Mary Knotek Loznak. She married Gale Kuhns Feb. 1, 1941 in Bannister. He preceded her in death Feb. 16, 1974. Surviving are two sons, Ernest (Sue) Kuhns of Kalkaska and Wayne Kuhns of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers, Ed Loznak of Maple City and John Loznak of Owosso; three sisters, Mildred Bakita and Dorothy Signs, both of St. Johns, and Frances Clemens of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, David and Kenny; a daughter, Barbara; and three brothers, Stanley, Fritz, and Chuck. Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at the Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska, with the Rev. Howard Seaver officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska. Memorials may be made to North Country Hospice. Stella Grace (Conklin) Earl, 69, of Yuma Ariz., formerly of St. Johns, passed away Dec. 11, 2000. She was born Nov. 9, 1931 in Muskegon, the daughter of Delbert and Leona (Brandt) Conklin. Stella was very active in community service and held a master's degree in linguistics. She was most previously employed as a teacher. Surviving are Susan Rose, B.A. of Yuma, Ariz., Kathleen (Peter) Coluerson, PHD of Gainesville, Fla., Dr. Jeffrey (Julie) Earl of Louisburg, Kan., Dr. Daniel (Dr. Jean) Earl of Jonesboro, Tenn., Doreen (Dr. William) Rubin R.N. of Bellingham, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; one brother, David (Carolyn) Conklin of DeWitt; and one sister, Lucille Smithson of Oakland Park, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandchild. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She was cremated in Yuma, Ariz. Mildred P. Slaughter, 81, of Owosso, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. She was born Feb. 21, 1919 in Vernon, the daughter of Grover and Levina (Hunt) Mitchell. She lived in Clinton County most of her life. She married Charles H. Slaughter Oct. 17, 1936 in Lansing. He preceded her death March 12, 1996. Mildred was a member of the First Church of Christ. She was a homemaker. Surviving her are sons, Gary (Joanne) Slaughter of Nashville, Tenn., Robert (Irby) Slaughter of Victoria, Texas; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Dora (James) Waters of Owosso; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Clarence and Carl Mitchell. Funeral service were held at Jennings-Lyons Funeral Chapel Dec. 18 with the Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetary. Memorials may be made to the First Church of Christ or SCOA. LaMott A. Field, 89, of Laingsburg, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. He was born on Aug. 3, 1911, the son of Curtis Lloyd and Gertrude Irene (Bradshaw) Field. He lived most of his life in Elsie and Laingsburg. He attended Elsie High School and Ferris Institutes. He married Ingrid Ethel Nelson. She preceded him in death in 1967. LaMott married Laura Elnore Vaniman Aug. 28, 1969. She preceded him in death in 1997. He was a member of the Laingsburg Lions Club and was the former owner of Field Pharmacy and was a registered pharmacist for 59 years. Surviving him are his two sons, Bruce (Ruth) Field of Laingsburg, and Keith Field of Tempe, Ariz.; two step-children, Gary (Diane) VanOrsdol of St. Johns, and Jill (Lyle) Brewer of Golden Canyon, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Dec. 19, at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, McDougall Chapel, Laingsburg, burial at Laingsburg Cemetery with Pastor Rob McPherson officiating. Memorials may be made to the United Church of Ovid, Laingsburg Ambulance, or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. Leonard J. KanaskiLeonard J. Kanaski died December 19, 2000 at the age of 75. He was born in Kindee, MI on November 3, 1925, the son of Felix and Teresa (Murawski) Kanaski and lived in St. Johns most of his life. He retired from St. Johns Ford Mercury and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Leonard married Rosalind Pilmore in Fowler on June 17, 1950 and she survives him. Also surviving are his children, MaryAnn (Daniel) Henning of Battle Creek, JoAnn (Wallace) Wiles of Cass City, MI, Diann (Rodney) Holt, Leonard Kanaski, all of St. Johns, Michael Kanaski of Charleston, SC, Lawrence (Angela) Kanaski of Murray KY, Rhonda (Michael) Howell of Lansing, and Russell (June) Kanaski of Taneytown, MD; grandchildren, Kurt, Eric, and Private Jeffrey Henning, Adam, Aaron, and Kristen Wiles, Wendy, Patrick, and Katie Holt, Kevin, Timothy, and Lisa Kanaski, Amanda and Sean Kanaski, Jessica, Tabbitha, and Sabrina Kanaski, Megan and Joshua Howell, Alina and Sloan Kanaski; brother, Richard (Sarah) Kanaski of PA, and sister, Lucille Anstead of Port Huron. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Delores Ellis. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 22, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home with burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Kalamazoo. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Clyde Wesley ManevalClyde Wesley Maneval, a kind and fun-loving soul, entered our world on October 8, 1913 in Williams County, Ohio. Throughout his life he was a contented man, devoted to his family, friends, and his passion for horses. He graduated from St. Johns High School and married his wife, Kathrine Onalee Carver Maneval in 1935. They began their life together in Wolverine, Michigan where he farmed with his family, worked with horse teams and ran a riding stable. Longtime resident of the St. Johns area, he lived in Eureka since 1953 where he worked at Gowers and later retired from Sealed Power. He attended Eureka Christian Church. Always a horsemen, he was loved and respected among his friends as an important member of the equine community. He helped establish the Clinton County 4-H horse program, rode across Michigan on the inaugural opening of the shore-to-shore trail, participated as a teamster in the Michigan Centennial Wagon Train. He supported the breed of Appaloosa horses, packed horseback from Eureka to Wolverine, explored Arizona, South Dakota and Wyoming on horseback. He rode a million miles throughout Clinton and neighboring counties on hundreds of horses and sold many novice riders in the community their first good horse. Clyde spent every October until his lifes end doing what he loved best, enjoying northern Michigan with his friends on horseback. God forbid he should go to any heaven that has no horses. Clyde was preceded in death by his much-loved wife of 60 years, Onalee in 1996, and his sister, Dortha Sutfin. He is survived by family including: children, Marilyn Leavitt (friend Ron Scott) and Milo and Brenda Maneval; grandchildren, Jerry Stevens, Larry (Tamie) Stevens, Todd Maneval, Tara (Ed) Paksi, Ty (Dina) Maneval, Tazia Maneval, Tab Maneval, Rebecca (Terry) Stockton, Joel (Kelly) Helmer; and his beloved friend Vera Bryant. Also his dear nephews and their wives, LeRoy & Martha Sutfin, and Melvin & Betty Sutfin, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 21, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Rev. Robert Ditmer and Rev. LeRoy Sutfin officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County. Doris Irene YordyDoris Irene Yordy, age 65, of St. Johns, went home to Jesus December 17, 2000. She was born on September 9, 1935, in St. Johns, MI. She was the special daughter of Charles and Mary (Kauffman) Yordy. She attended the Bethel Mennonite Church, and for most of her life lived in the St. Johns area. She was always willing to give you a good hearty laugh or hug. She was preceded in death by her parents and one baby sister. Survivors include a brother, Kenneth (Becky) Yordy of Florida, a sister, Bertha (John) Stevens of St. Johns, also surviving are four nieces, three nephews, six great nieces, and two great nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. December 21, 2000 at the Osgood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 4-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial following at Washington Township Cemetery, Ashley, with Pastor Joe Pendleton officiating. Memorials can be given to Gods Mission Outreach, Maple Rapids. Age 74 of St. Louis died Saturday December 16, 2000 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, Michigan. Funeral services will be Monday, December 18, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Alward-Carter Funeral Home. Pastor Sam Dunbar will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, Michigan. Visitation at the funeral home will be Sunday 2-4 & 7-9. She was born in Bingham Township, Clinton County Michigan on September 24 1926 the daughter of Ben & Iris ( Garden ) Holiday. She resided most of her life in Gratiot County area and was a member of the First Church Of God. Thora loved to go to yard sales and being with her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. She also loved and cared for her pet cat Rajah. Survivors include 1 son: Ernie DeRosia of St. Louis, 3 daughters Irma & Al Nisonger of St. Louis, Kathy & Al Bromley of Stanton, Linda Leonard St. Louis, 2 sisters, Darlene & Bob Moore of Alma, Marvel & Jack McCormick of St. Louis, 2 brothers Clair & Bonnie Holiday of Riverdale and Benson & Marlene Holiday of Vestaburg. 6 Grandchildren & 8 Great Grandchildren.
