This will be a little info for those who have been touched by my father's way, James J. Sykora Auctioneer, and to give thanks for those who gave a prayer, thought or sent a sympathy card or flowers. On Sat. Dec. 22, 2001, 10:31 a.m., the gavel lies silent - it has made its final strike on the board. After a very short illness my father passed comfortably for the next duties of God. He is gone, but will never be forgotten. Jim Sykora had been recently inducted to the Michigan State Auctioneers Association Auctioneer Hall of Fame Jan. 23, 2001. This made his whole life accomplishments complete. Jim has been a Michigan State Auctioneer Association member since it founded in the early '50s and served on the board of directors from 1967 to 1971. Jim has had so many experiences by being an auctioneer that it would take a book to explain all of them. Let's try to give you some of his lifetime achievements. Jim attended Reppert Auction School of Auctioneering in 1948 and started a career as auctioneer for the Prince and Company Livestock Auction in St. Johns, and sold for there for many years. Jim married in 1963 and moved to Clare in 1954. He sold at the Marion Livestock yards for 16 years, sold at Gaylord Livestock Yards for 17 years, sold at Standish Livestock for 17 years, sold at Clare Livestock Yards for 10 years, 32 years at the Michigan Livestock Yards at St. Louis, and has since retired from St. Louis MLE. Jim started with his first farm sale in 1954 and gradually his business expanded and by 1960, he was selling 50 private auctions a year, plus his weekly livestock sale barns. Jim's profession expanded greatly by 1970 and he was selling over 100 private auctions a year along with the livestock sale barns. His work included farm machinery, dairy and beef auctions, household and antiques, and small industrial type sales such as service stations, restaurants, etc. In 1981 Jim invited his son Scott J. Sykora to enter the auction profession, and Scott worked with him as a apprentice auctioneer. After selling for five years they then became partners and worked as a professional auction team. In 1992 Jim sold the family auction co. to Scott J. Sykora and Jim still continued to sell at the auctions at his own pace as founder of Sykora Auction Service, INC. Some of Jim's other experiences took him all over the state conducting 4-H auctions every year for the last 44 years. He also entered the world Championship Livestock Auctioneering Contest 1966 held on Mackinac Island and took second place. Jim has had a real good working relationship with the public and has been respected for his honesty and integrity. I truly believe that my father Jim has contributed so much to the State of Michigan for his many years as a dedicated professional auctioneer, and would like the public to know about the Clare County legend of James J. Sykora, Auctioneer. John K. Hannah, Elk Rapids Formerly of St. Johns Age 69, died January 14, 2002 Born December 11, 1932 in Lansing, MI, to Alvin and Dorothy (Eddy) Hannah.
