Helen O. Corkin | Cloyd Walden |
Helen O. Corkin passed away quietly at home, Tuesday, January 22, 2002. She was born August 6, 1918 in Detroit, the daughter of Charles W. and Helen (Strickland) Owston. She received her A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1939, with a major in french, and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She was married on July 24, 1941 to Leo W. Corkin of St. Johns, who preceded her in death. Helen was an active member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, serving on the altar guild for many years, as a church school leader and member of the vestry. She is survived by her two daughters, Nell Corkin (Peter Breschard) of Okemos and Kathleen (Brendan) Boyle of East Lansing. Memorial services will be 11:00 Saturday, January 26, 2002 at St. John's Episcopal Church, St. Johns, with Rev. Howard Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends 4-7 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions to The Nature Conservancy, the Capital Area Humane Society or Boarshead Theatre in memory of Helen O. Corkin. Noel S. Smith died January 21, 2002, at the age of 95. He was born in Flint on April 21, 1906, the son of Walter I. and Etta (Sutton) Smith and lived in St. Johns before moving to Perrinton. He was a farmer and was affiliated with Salem United Methodist Church. Noel married Esther Trowbridge in Sunfield on January 1, 1934 and she preceded him in death on January 21, 1994. Surviving are two sons, Walter (Ruth) Smith of Ashley and Malcolm (Agnes) Smith of Bannister, two daughters, Marilee (Glen) Mills of Carson City and Elizabeth (Bruce) Pope of Las Vegas, NV, 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and sister, Helen Crum of Ellenton, FL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Smith. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 24, 2002 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Union Home Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church. Cloyd Walden, age 82 of St. Johns, Michigan died Saturday, January 19, 2002 at Ashley Healthcare Center in Ashley. He retired in 1977 from State of Michigan Prison Maintenance Department in Jackson. Memorial services will be Wednesday Evening, January 23, 2002 at 6:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Jana Jirak will officiate with burial at Union Cemetery, Winn, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday at 5:00 P.m. until the time of the service. Cloyd was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 11, 1919, the son of Cloyd & Martha (Osborn) Walden. On June 21, 1938 he married Mildred Bellingar in Winn, Michigan. She died on May 7, 1997. He resided most of his life in Mason, Michigan moving to St. Johns in 1997. Survivors include one son, Larry & Joanne Walden of Ashley, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimers Foundation. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Leah K. Coleman died Sunday, January 20, 2002 at the age of 84. She was born in Ovid on November 16, 1917, the daughter of Edward and Myrtle (Lake) Wilson. She graduated from Ovid High School in 1936 and married Robert J. Coleman on December 31, 1938 in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1994. Leah retired from General Telephone Co. and was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Conrad and Kathleen Coleman of Pleasant Lake, MI and Joseph and Carol Coleman of Ovid, four grandchildren, Jack Coleman of Pleasant Lake, Joan and Kevin Morlock of Wahalla, MI, Rebecca Coleman of St. Johns and David and Andrea Coleman of Chicago and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and James Wilson and sister, Julia Morrill. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, with Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Clinton Memorial Meals on Wheels. Frederick C. Lange, 62, of DeWitt, died Jan. 18, 2002. He was born Aug. 19, 1939 in Lansing. He was a former employee of Lindell Drop Forge and was employed with Wal-Mart in St. Johns. Surviving are his wife, Gwen; two daughters, Susan (Gary) Martin of DeWitt and Karen (Matt) Hoedeman of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Gregory, Eric, Eris, Hailey and Alicia Martin, Jessica and Jason Hoedeman; two sisters, Lois Budd and Bertha (Charles) Fry; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel M. Buske and the Rev. Paul J. Lindloff, co-pastors, officiating. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Memorials may be made to Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, DeWitt Chapel. Laura E. Pohl, Lansing formerly of Fowler, born March 7, 1901, to Michael and Anna (Simon) Schafer in Westphalia, died Saturday, January 19, 2002 in Lansing at age 100. Laura married Henry N. Pohl on June 13, 1922 at St. Marys Catholic Church, Westphalia, and resided on their farm near Fowler for 50 years. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler, a member of The Daughters' of Isabella and Christian Mothers Society. She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking cookies, crocheting afghans and making quilts. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry N. in 1974, her daughter, Marjorie Harris-Coleman, 3 infant children, 7 sisters and 2 brothers. Surviving are her 3 children, James (Donna) of Lansing, Janet (George) Mann of Freeland and Ann (Fred) Edinger of Marshall, 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 PM at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Klein and Msgr. Sylvester Fedewa as co-celebrants. Rite of Committal will follow at 4 PM in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Palmer-Bush Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw where the Rosary will be prayed Monday at 7 PM and the Vigil prayed Tuesday at 7 PM. Memorials may be made to the Outreach Mass, in care of Diocese of Lansing, 300 W. Ottawa, Lansing, MI 48933 or St. Gerard Church Building Fund. Edna L. Pewoski died peacefully January 15, 2002 at Kairos Dwelling. Mrs. Pewoski was born August 12, 1926 in Lansing, MI, the daughter of Frederick and Ida (Brakob) Kremin. She was an incredible loving mother and an extremely hard worker, helping on the family farm. Edna was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and was a devoted volunteer at Nazareth. She loved nature, was an excellent cook and taught her daughter to love the Bible. Edna was preceded in death by her ex-husband John Pewoski, Jr. in 1990 and by her brother William Kremin. Surviving are a daughter Sr. Janet Pewoski, SSJ of Nazareth; four cousins: Erna Soldan, Eleanor Ezell, Ella Grabow and Harry Grabow; loyal friend Sr. Kathleen ODonnell, SSJ; extended family of the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph and Dillon Hall especially Sr. Ruth Heyn, SSJ and Sr. Lucy Schneider, SSJ. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, January 18, 2002 - 11:00 AM at Holy Family Chapel. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements made by Betzler Funeral Home, Kalamazoo.
