Hilda M. "Tillie" Smith

Hilda M. "Tillie" Smith died January 29, 2002 at the age of 81. She was born in Clinton County on February 14, 1920, the daughter of Harvey and Cecil (Kellogg) Griffith and lived in the St. Johns area most of her life. She retired from Sears and was a member Edwin T. Stiles #153 American Legion Auxiliary. Hilda married George Smith and he preceded her in death on May 23, 1987.

Surviving are one son, Robert Smith of St. Johns, grandson, Ryan P. (Smith) Williams and three sisters, Thelma Eick of St. Johns, Gwen Streeter of Columbus, OH and Evelyn Keener of Lansing. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Ryon and Ethel Estes Lux and one brother, Merlyn "Bud" Griffith.

Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the Osgood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Ashley Healthcare Center.

Joseph J. Bartek

bartek.jpg (8449 bytes)Age 90 of Elsie, Michigan died Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at his home. He was a mechanic & former owner of Bartek Service Garage; he also repaired small engine his entire life. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years, until 2 weeks ago he retired.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 11:00 A.m. at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie. Visitation will be at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Thursday and Friday 2-9 with the family present from 2-4 & 7-9 P.m. There will be a Scripture Service Friday evening at 7:00 P.m.

Joe was born on February 28, 1911 in Owosso, Michigan, the son of John & Elizabeth (Konecny) Bartek Sr. On August 24, 1935 he married Ann Marie Kohoutek at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso. She died on February 21, 2000. He was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister. He was also on the Elsie Fire Department for 50 years; he served on the Elsie Village Council for 25 years, and was a member of the Elsie Improvement Association for 60 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, & sports activities, he rarely missed any sporting event that his children or grandchildren participated in. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area.

Survivors include 5 daughters, JoAnn & David Fogarty of Elsie, Marie & Jim Hurst of Laingsburg, Betty & Bernie Puvalowski of Ruth, Emelie & Russel Schoch of Elsie, Dorothy Bartek of Lansing, 25 grandchildren, and 52 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Frank Bartek of Ovid, and John & Mary Bartek of Ovid, also many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, 1 grandson, and 1 sister.

Memorials can be made to St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, Ovid-Elsie Community Fund, or Charity of the donor’s choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Emma H. Stripling

Emma H. Stripling, DeWitt, Age 89, died January 29, 2002. Born August 19, 1912 in Macon, Georgia, Mrs. Stripling was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Randolph B. Stripling Sr. (1992); son-in-law, Ralph Proctor (2001); 4 brothers and 1 sister. Surviving are her children, Randolph Jr. (Jane), of DeWitt, Sheila (Robert) Perdue of Eaton Rapids and Maureen Proctor of DeWitt; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Eva Etheredge of GA, Ruby Stripling of PA and Sadie (Roy) Kenyon of Clinton Twp., MI. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 2, 10 AM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt, with the Rev. Joseph Dedic officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Layton Norris Rugh

Layton Norris Rugh,  DeWitt, Formerly of Lansing Age 89, died January 29, 2002. Born March 4, 1912 in Calhoun County and moved to Lansing in 1924. Mr. Rugh was a former employee of Reo Motors and retired in 1977 from Wohlert Corp. after 44 years of service. He was a longtime member and former President of the Local Chapter of ASTME, a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church and enjoyed furniture restoration. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Florence; 2 sons, John N. (Constance) of Aurora, CO and Thomas L. (Deanna) of East Lansing; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Betty (Lawrence) Pancost of Lansing. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 1, 2 PM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Robert Lester Smith

Robert Lester Smith, 72 of Tucson, Ariz., born March 4, 1929 - the first twin born at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns., died Jan. 25, 2002 after a long illness.

Robert (Bob) is survived by his wife, Beverly (Cook) Smith; sisters, Joan Whitford of St. Johns, Jean Prim of Union City; brother Charlie Eldred of North Carolina; children, Rita Thatcher of Indiana, Linda Burke, Ruth Sanborn, Richard Smith, Roger Smith, Robin Smith, Rex Smith all of Michigan, and Farin Smith, Elizabeth Hickman, Barbara Smith all of Tucson; 18 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three nieces and 12 nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Eldred; father, Archie Smith; step father, Farin Eldred; son, Robert (Bobby) Smith; twin, Richard Smith, and brother Duane Eldred; sister, Mary Eldred; grandsons Darrell Thatcher and Maco Evans.

Carol A. Lefevre

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel on Friday, February 1, 2002 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating. Burial will follow at Dover Twp. Cemetery, Tuston, MI. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.

She was born August 16, 1950 in Lansing, MI, to Lewis W. and Ella Mae (Robertson) Kirkby and lived most of her life in the Mid-Michigan area. She graduated from Sexton High School with the class of 1968 and married Joseph Lefevre in Lansing, MI on January 14, 1970. She worked for Oldsmobile as a journeyman, Die Maker and Ergonomic Representative. She enjoyed Researching Genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lefevre of DeWitt; a daughter, Mary Ann Lefevre of Lansing; 3 sons, Timothy Forrest (Erin O'Bryant) Lefevre of East Lansing, Michael Gregory Lefevre of Portland, OR, Jonathon Patrick Lefevre of DeWitt; parents, Lewis and Ella Mae Kirkby of Tuston; sister, Carolyn (Ken) Hankamp of Grand Ledge; brother, Kenneth (Jan) Kirkby of Grand Ledge; nieces and nephews; and friends.

Mark A. Cooper

Mark A. Cooper, Bath,  A loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandson and nephew, passed away January 28, 2002, at the age of 33. Mark was born January 20, 1969 in Lansing, graduated from Bath High School in 1987, and was a resident of Bath. Mark worked as a Carpenter with his brother who originally founded the company, Integrity Interiors, and was a member of Carpenters Local Union #1004. Mark was an avid hunter, he loved to bow hunt, it was more of a challenge for him. One thing about hunting is no matter who got the deer, it was always a thrill. He was preceded in death by his grandma, Ann (MawMaw) Cooper and both of his grandpa's J.D. Cooper and Leroy Dunham.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda (Derke); 3 children, Cassandra (10), Jessalin (8), and Dylan (7); his parents, Bob and Connie; brother, Robert (Jackie); sister, Melisa (Gordon) Ferguson; grandmother, Fredia Dunham, father and mother-in-law, Donald and Janet Derke and family; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and numerous friends. Mark will be remembered for his quick smile and laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and everyone who's life he touched.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2:00 PM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Avenue, East Lansing with the Rev. Kenneth L. Ridge, Paster of Towar Hart Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Cemetery, Bath. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Norma M. Albaugh

Norma M. Albaugh died January 27, 2002 at the age of 75. She was born in Middlebury Township on October 18, 1926, the daughter of Albert and Cecille (Hall) Buck. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Ovid. Norma married Richard Dale Albaugh on August 18, 1951 and he survives her.

Also surviving are one son, Terry Albaugh of Owosso, granddaughter, Shelbi Albaugh of Shepherd, brother, Gordon Buck of Ovid and sister, Florence Post of Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dennis Boonstra officiating. The family will receive friends 10 A.M. - 1 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Irene J. Nobis

Irene J. Nobis died January 27, 2002 at the age of 87. She was born in Lebanon Township, Michigan  June 15, 1914 the daughter of Paul and Clara (Ernst) Zell.  She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and retired as Matron of the Clinton County Childrens Home.  Irene married Edwin Nobis in Fowler on November 28, 1935 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Carlene (Robert) Kundrock of Dimondale and Barbara (Kenneth) Heibeck, Jr, of St. Johns, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a brother, Louis (Virgilene) Zell of Dewitt, sisters-in-law, Edna Zell of St. Johns and Eleanor Dunham of Decatur, IL, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Lorenz Zell and a sister, Esther Korte. 

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 31, 2002  at St. Johns Lutheran Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. George Brinley and Pastor Paul Clark officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hour or the American Cancer Society.

Kris Keusch

Kris Keusch, age 48, passed away at home Sunday, January 27, 2002, after suffering from a 30-year battle with a brain tumor. Although Kris was never able to work, he devoted most of his time caring for his loving parents. Kris loved being with people and sharing their dreams. Kris held a special place in his heart for all his nieces and nephews, always taking time to play a game or just paying extra attention to them. Kris loved crocheting afghans, making ceramics, playing bingo, writing a journal, and watching the Detroit Lions play. He will be missed by the many lives he touched.

Surviving are his parents, Julius and Wyona Keusch of Ovid, two sisters, Karen (John) Symanski of Las Vegas, Konnie (John) VanGeertruy of Ovid, four brothers, Konrad (Cindy) Keusch of DeWitt, Karl (Mary) Keusch of Florida, Ken (Deb) Keusch of Ovid and Keith (Cindy) Keusch of Laingsburg, eight nieces, nine nephews, one great niece and two great nephews.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:30 A.M. Thursday, January 31, 2002 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lansing, with Rev. Fr. Paul Cummings officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid with a Rosary prayed 7 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.

Rosemary Moore

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate and burial will be at Fairfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday & Tuesday 2-9 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.

Rosemary was the daughter of Howard P. & Viva M. ( Field ) Scott, born on December 16, 1928 in Elsie, Michigan. She graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1947. On October 2, 1949 she married Archie Moore at the Elsie United Methodist Church. They have been married 52 years. She was a former member of O.E.S. Lodge # 69 Elsie, Past Matron, held several offices & chaired several committees in the lodge. She was a Page for Grand Patron, and was a former Den Leader for the Cub Scouts and former Bluebird Leader.

Survivors are her husband, Archie Moore of Elsie, 1 son Barry & Katie Moore of Elsie, 1 sister Arlene & Robert Somers of Chapin, 1 brother, Rex Scott of Lansing, 1 brother in law & sister in law, Frederick & Doris Moore of Owosso, several nieces & nephews. Her parents predeceased her.

Memorials can be made to Shiawassee County Hospice Program in her memory. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
