Gladys Evelyn Baker

Baker-Gladys.jpg (10714 bytes)Gladys Evelyn Baker went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 6, 2002. She was born in Loogootee, Illinois on July 31, 1916, and married Ernest L. Baker January 2, 1940. Family will receive visitors at the Osgood Funeral Home on Sunday, February 10, 2-6 P.M., and Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Services will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church on US-27 in St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of St. Johns.

Gladys was an active member of First Baptist Church in St. Johns for nearly 60 years, worked at Clinton National Bank as Sidewalk Teller, and volunteered as seamstress for Clinton Memorial Hospital and the Auxiliary's Capers for many years.

She is survived by her daughters Wenda Messer (Theron) of Denver, Colorado and Janet Henney (Dale) of Flint, Michigan, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Gladys is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Ken Snider of Traverse City, MI, sisters Phoebe Runge, Esther Reese, Nola Robb (Donald), Mary Krutsinger, and brothers Frank Miller (Evelyn) and Lester Miller (Erma), all of Illinois, several nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

She was preceded in death by her deeply beloved husband, Ernest L. Baker, a sister Alice and brother Albert, and by her parents Simon & Dada Miller of Illinois.

Our family wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to Amy and Pat Martens for the loving care they gave to Mother during the years she lived at Alward Family Home, to the staff at Hazel Findlay Country Manor, and to Drs. MacDonald and McLaughlin.

Charlene A. Robertson

Charlene A. Robertson "Cookie," Bath Age 57, died February 5, 2002. Born September 17, 1944 in Saginaw, Mrs. Robertson was a teacher with Bath Schools for 9 years and wrote "Chatter by Char" in the DeWitt Bath Review for many years. She was Charter President of the Bath Lioness Club and a very active member of Bath United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband of 35 1/2 years, Kenneth E.; 2 sons, Edward J. of Detroit and James A. of Bath; 1 granddaughter, Alexandria Robertson; parents, Howard and Arlene Herzberger of Bay City; 3 brothers, Howie (Pam) Herzberger and Richard (Sandy) Herzberger both of Bay City and Phil Herzberger of Texas; 5 nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 9, 1 PM at Bath United Methodist Church, Webster Road, Bath, MI with the Rev. Nancy Besemer, Pastor, officiating. Lorraine Margaret Berry

berry.jpg (8914 bytes)Age 80 of St. Johns formerly of Chippewa Lake, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 3, 2002 to be with her Lord. She was surrounded by her loved ones, who will always cherish memories of time spent with "Gram" at the lake.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at 11:30 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns, Michigan. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate and burial will take place at Chippewa Lake Cemetery, Evart, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday Morning at 10:30 A.M. until the time of service.

Lorraine was born in Sunfield, Michigan on August 15, 1921 the daughter of Daniel & Lillian (McGee) VanWormer. Lorraine, beloved by friends and family alike for both her wit and guile was predeceased in death by her husband Donald, December 19, 1999. They were married 57 years. She was also predeceased by her parents and a brother, Clarence VanWormer. She will be deeply missed by her surviving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom deeply cared for this very special lady.

She is survived by her children, Donald & Margaret Berry of Trufant, and Michael & Diane Berry of St. Johns. Lorraine was the Grandmother to Tim & Sherie Berry of Gun Lake, Scott & Jaime Berry of Maple Rapids, Heather & Patrick Dick of St. Johns, and Cynthia Anne Berry of Kentwood. She was also the doting Great Grandmother to Joshua and Jacob Berry of Gun Lake, and Trevor, Chelsea and Seth Berry of Maple Rapids. Blessed with an engaging laugh and sense of humor, she was considered the World’s Best Grandma by her four grandchildren, who spent many weeks of Spring and Summer vacation at her Chippewa Lake home, fishing, swimming, playing baseball and boating. "Gram" and Mom may have left suddenly, but she left all of us with a "pontoon boat-load" of memories that are etched in our hearts forever. She was also survived by her extended family at Chippewa Lake, the Jones, Summers, Doyles and other special friends.

Memorials can be made to Hospice of Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Frederick C. Lange

Frederick C. Lange, 62, of DeWitt, died Jan. 18, 2002. He was born Aug. 19, 1939 in Lansing.

He was a former employee of Lindell Drop Forge and was employed at Wal-Mart of St. Johns.

Surviving are his wife, Gwen; two daughters, Susan (Gary) Martin of DeWitt, and Karen (Matt) Hoedeman of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Gregory, Eric, Eris, Hailey and Alicia Martin, Jessica and Jason Hoedeman; two sisters, Lois Budd and Bertha (Charles) Fry; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel M. Buske and the Rev. Paul L. Lindloff co-pastors officiating. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Memorials may be made to Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, DeWitt Chapel.

Florence Temple

temple.jpg (10225 bytes)Age 87 of St. Johns, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002 at her farmhouse of 62 years. She was born May 10, 1914 in Flint, Michigan. She was the daughter of Louis Glenn & Sarah (Frisbie) Sager. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. Elder Adam Porter and Elder Adam Heath will officiate with burial at Duplain Township Cemetery, Duplain Township, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 P.M.

Florence was a member of the Church of Christ (Temple Lot). She had been active in the Busy Bee extension Club and Clintonaire Choir. She was a dedicated housewife of almost 64 years to her husband Clarence who lives at home. She will be greatly missed by all. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Vicky and the hospice people that helped our mother.

Survivors include her husband Clarence Temple, 3 sons, Ralph & Darleen Temple, Wallace & Yue Temple, Dean & Jeanette Temple, 11 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren, Jennifer, Blake, Matthew, Brandon, Joshua, Kyle, Todd, Tiffany, and Troy Temple, Tonya Francis, Heidi Collings, Jason Ruppert and Becky Merchand, 7 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. Florence is predeceased by one son Ronald.

In lieu of flowers those wishing may make contributions to Hospice of Clinton County. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan.

Mary M. Kissane

Kissane-Mary.jpg (10740 bytes)Mary M. Kissane died February 3, 2002 at the age of 97. Born December 28, 1904 in Dallas Township, Michigan the daughter of Julius and Regina (Willems) Motz.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ladies Altar Society, Farm Bureau, and former 4H Leader.  She married Byron Kissane April 23, 1930 and he preceded her in death February 2, 1978.

Mary is survived by two sons, Bob (Marilyn) Kissane and Bill (Judy) Kissane, all of St. Johns, two daughters, Rose Mary (Fred) Eldridge of Larimore, ND and Marjorie (Andy) Minarik of St. Johns, 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.   Mary also has one brother, Brother Isaac Jogues Motz of Notre Dame, and two sisters, Rose Lindemann of Lansing & Sister S.S. Lucia Motz of Racine, WI.  In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Francis Kissane, a grandson, Bobbie Minarik, two sisters, Bertha Rademacher & Aurelia Plunkett, and three brothers, Arnold, Roy, and Leo Motz.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:30 A.M. Thursday, February 7, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary service prayed   7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Ovid Healthcare Center.

Christopher W. Spitzley

Spitzley-Christopher2.jpg (8657 bytes)Christopher W. Spitzley passed away February 4, 2002 at the age of 19 as the result of an auto accident. He was born in Lansing on August 16, 1982, the son of Dennis and Janice (Pohl) Spitzley. He was a 2001 graduate of Fowler High School and was attending Ferris State University majoring in computer information systems. Chris was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and ARK Youth Group, was an avid hunter, enjoyed hockey and most other sports activities.

Surviving are his parents, Dennis and Janice Spitzley, two brothers, Dan Spitzley (Melissa Armbrustmacher) and Brian Spitzley, grandparents, Norman and Helen Spitzley, all of Fowler, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Joseph and Mary Pohl.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 7, 2002 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Raymond Rademacher officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with a rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. both days.

Carlie Marie Smith

Carlie Marie Smith, Westphalia, Age 19, beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, and aunt, passed away as a result of an automobile accident on Sunday, February 3, 2002. She was born on November 18, 1982 in Lansing the daughter of Glenn J. and Marie A. (Pohl) Smith. Carli was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a 2001 graduate of Pewamo-Westphalia High School. She attended Ferris State University studying Radiographic Technology as well as being a member of the Women's Basketball Team. She was an avid basketball and Michigan State University fan. Carli was a spirited, dedicated, sentimental, determined, charismatic, athletic, sarcastic, feisty and adventurous woman whose devotion and love to her family could not be matched. She was a friend to everyone. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Leo Pohl.

Surviving are her parents, Glenn and Marie Smith of Westphalia; sister, Cami (Chad) Huhn of Pewamo; brothers, Timothy (Abigail) Smith; Todd (Brandy) Smith, both of Westphalia; Ted (TeAnn) Smith of Portland; Tony (Special Friend, Kristy) Smith of Westphalia; and Troy (Special Friend, Lisa) Smith of Westphalia; grandparents, Simon and Revella Smith of Westphalia and Veronica Pohl of Pewamo; very special and best friend, Brandon Weber of Westphalia; nieces Micah and Grace Huhn; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. both days. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Jean R. Seyfried

Jean R. Seyfried,  DeWitt Age 73, died February 2, 2002. Born July 25, 1928 in Lansing, Jean retired from Michigan Retail Hardware Association and ran the family business, DeWitt Grain Corporation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Alice Daugherty, 2 brothers, Don and Maxwell Frisosky and a sister, Marion Shroyer.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Don; 2 sons, Bruce E. and Brian (Lisa) both of DeWitt; 4 grandchildren, Alexandria, Torey, Joshua and Kyle Seyfried; several nieces, nephews and special friends, Janet Stearman and Marcella Ward. A special thank-you to Tammy Hine, Jayne Stoy and the Clinton County Hospice for their special care.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 5, 1:00 PM at DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt with Pastor Wesley Farrier, officiating. There will be no visitation. Clyde F. Hurst

Clyde F. Hurst,  St. Johns 83 died Friday, February 1, 2002. Clyde was born May 28, 1918 in Laingsburg, MI the son of John and Florence (Soper) Hurst. He graduated from Laingsburg High School in 1936, served in the U.S. Army during WWII and retired from Fisher Body after 30 years of service in 1976. On October 20, 1956 he married Kathleen Nadine Daniher in Owosso. She preceded him in death on July 29, 1999.

Survived by daughter, Lisa Hurst (Steve Raymor) of St. Johns; son, Patrick (Sandra) Hurst of Caro, MI; 3 grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan and Sean Hurst; 2 great-grandchildren, Jordan & Clayton; aunt and uncle, Clifford and Nina Hart of East Lansing, MI; brothers, Ernest (Roseann) Hurst-St. Clair Shore, MI, Robert Hurst-Laingsburg, MI, Paul (Margo) Hurst-St. Johns; sisters Mary Ley-Concord, MI and Barbara (Dan) Rourke-Flint. Preceded by parents; wife; grandson, Peyton Moore; granddaughter Casey Mathes; Brother, Bernard; and sisters, Anna Woodworth, Patricia Rourke and Alice Hobrla.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday 2-8 P.M. and Monday 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A rosary will be prayed on Sunday evening at 7 P.M. and a vigil service will be said 7 P.M. Monday at Osgood Funeral Home. Catherine Ann Atkins

Atkins_Catherine.jpg (12110 bytes)Catherine Ann Atkins, died February 1, 2002 at the age of 53, following an automobile accident earlier in Shiawssee County. Born in Owosso on March 27, 1948, the daughter of Melvin and Virginia (Scheidler) McKone. Catherine was a  graduate of New Lothrop High School, Class of 1966 and received her B.A. and M.A. in Education from M.S.U., is a former member of O.E.S., is a member of Job's Daughters, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and a first grade teacher at North Elementary in the Ovid-Elsie School District. She married Richard L. Atkins on October 7, 1967 and he survives her.

Also surviving is one daughter, Richiene (Mike) Nidefski of Ovid, three sons, Michael (Sue) Atkins of St. Johns, Chet  (Patty) Atkins of Webberville, Mark (Courtney) Atkins of Laingsburg, two granddaughters, Sarah Burch and Kaleigh Atkins, two brothers, Chuck (Jan) McKone of Flushing, Robert McKone of California, three sisters, Susie (Owen) Prussner of Henderson, Julie (Larry) Pease of St. Charles, Nancy (Rick) Bartek of Ovid.

Funeral service will be  12 Noon, Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 2-8 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday at Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, Ovid. Memorials may be made to North Elementary School or the donor's choice.

Aletha F. Stanlake

Aletha F. Stanlake, 82, of Haslett, died Feb. 6, 2001. She was born April 26, 1919 in Clinton County, the fourth generation to be born on the family farm that her great-grandfather built around the 1840s.

She graduated from Bath Schools and was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland J., in 1996.

Surviving is one son, Roland R. of Haslett.

Funeral services were held Feb. 9, 2002 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel with the Rev. D. Michael Maurer, Pastor of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment followed in Rose Cemetery, Bath.
