Delores Jean McCarthy

mccarthy.jpg (13373 bytes)Age 69 of St. Johns, a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister and friend passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002 at her home. She worked for the State of Michigan for 33 years.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 11, 2002 at 10:00 A.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy will officiate. Burial will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan.

Delores was born on August 19, 1932 in Ovid Township, Michigan, the daughter of Raymond G. and Caroline E. (Popovich) Stephens. She graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns with the Class of 1951. She was married to Russell C. McCarthy on February 7, 1953 in St. Johns. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. She was a volunteer of Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Vincent DePauls, and K of C dinners. She resided most of her life in Howell & St. Johns, Michigan.

Survivors include her husband, Russell McCarthy of St. Johns, 3 daughters, Suzanne & Jerry Stuhrberg of Howell, Debbie & Tim Ruch of Tecumseh, Katherine & Merlyn Niles of Howell, 1 son Mike & Laura McCarthy of Cedar, MN, 8 grandchildren & 1 great grandchild, mother Caroline E. Britten of Maple Rapids, 1 sister, Althea Smith of St. Johns, 2 brothers, Robert & Marilyn Stephens of Maple Rapids, and Richard & Mary Jo Stephens of Elgin, IL. She was predeceased by her father.

Delores was a very giving and caring person, her home was always open for friends and family to stop in. She loved traveling and spending time with her kids and grandchildren. She will always be in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Clinton County Hospice Program. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Yvonne P. Leslie

Yvonne Pearl Leslie, 54, of Mt. Clemens died March 6, 2002 in Harper Hospital, Detroit. She was born April 19, 1947 in St. Johns.

She was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, and later graduated from Michigan State University. She was a former high school English teacher and currently was employed as Museum Coordinator for the historical Crocker House in Mt. Clemens.

She was president of the Mah-Nah-Be-Zee Questors, a historical preservation organization, a member of the Nomads Traveling Club, the Macomb County Historical Society, First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening, antiques, and creative writing.

She is survived by her husband Robert D.; a son, Ryan, and daughter, Margaret Leslie, both at home; two brothers, Ross and Roy Harlow both of St. Johns; two sisters, Rachel Hollingsworth and Vicki Devereaux both of Midland; step-mother, Jean Harlow of St. Johns; and 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Margaret Chant Harlow.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., March 11, at First Presbyterian Church, 168 Cass, Mt.Clemens, with the Rev. Dr. J. Harold Ellens and the Rev. Richard Williams officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Twp. Memorials may be made to Crocker House Museum or Karmanos Cancer Institute. Mrs. Leslie will lie in state at the church from 12:15 to 1 p.m., March 11.

June F. (Montaven) Burnett

June F. (Montaven) Burnett, Bath, MI Age 77, died Monday, March 4, 2002. She was the daughter of Earl and Mabel Motaven, born June 17, 1924, in Lansing, MI. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1942, where she excelled in music. June married Harold B. Burnett May 28, 1948. They lived in Lansing, MI, and Glendora, CA, where their daughter Michelle G. was born, and then lived many years in Bath Charter Township. She was a charter member of the Women's Council of Realtors, Lansing, and later was Township Clerk of Bath Charter Township for 4 terms. June was a member of Lakeside Chapel of Park Lake for 25 years and after retirement, they moved to Plant City, FL, where she became a member of Faith Temple Assembly of God. June and Harold returned to Michigan in 1998, where upon she joined DeWitt Community Church. She served as board member, choir member and teacher in all churches as well as Librarian at Faith Temple. While Township Clerk, she was instrumental in obtaining a clinic and the construction of the senior citizen building next to the township hall. There is a plaque displayed there in her honor.

Surviving are her husband, Harold; daughter, Michelle (Don); 5 grandchildren, Hollie (Jeremiah), Kellie (Mike), Ivy Lynn (Bobby), Peter and Ondrayah; 2 great-granddaughters, Tyller Joy and Riley Jordan Leigh; brother, Gene (Tilly) Montaven; nieces and nephews residing in Michigan, Florida and Virginia.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 8, 11 AM at DeWitt Community Church, 505 Webb Road, DeWitt with the Rev. Ed Short, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing, Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and Friday 1 hour prior to the service at the Church. Those desiring may make a contribution to the missions June supported, c/o her family.

Marjorie A. Simmon

Marjorie A. Simmon, 58 died Saturday March 2, 2002.  She was born April 25, 1943 in St. Johns the daughter of Wayne A. & Beatrice (Ely) Smith. A 1961 graduate of St. Johns High School, Mrs. Simmom was as cook at St. Johns Big Boy for 20 years.

Survived by her father, Wayne Smith, children, Jeff (Donna) Simmon of Fowler; Rhonda (Chris) Devereaux of St. Johns; Kevin (Diane Lester) Simmon of Fowler; Tonya (Jim) Platte of Westphalia; Jennifer (Matt) Scott of Grand Ledge; Kimberly Simmon of Fowler and Steven (Jamie) Simmon of Fowler.  1 very special friend, 11 grandchildren, sister Linda (Larry) Stiffler of St. Johns Brother Mark (Michelle) Smith of St. Johns Several nieces & nephews.

Preceded in death by Mother, Beatrice Smith, grandparents, Grova & Albert Ely and Bessie & Horace Smith.

Funeral services will be held at Osgood Funeral Home on Tuesday March 5, 2002 at 1:30 P.M.  Burial will follow at South Bingham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donors choice.

Marie L. Elliott

Marie L. Elliott, 99, died Friday March 1, 2002.She was born in Saginaw on August 19, 1902, the daughter of Rev. Dr. Frederick and Sophie (Spring) Volz and lived most of her life in Ovid. Marie was a 1920 graduate of Saginaw High School and 1924 graduate of Michigan State University. She was a homemaker & teacher, attends United Church of Ovid, taught Sunday School, and was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Saginaw. Marie married Dr. Bruce Elliott in Saginaw on August 19, 1931 and he preceded her in death on March 13, 1966.

Surviving are two sons, David (Margie) Elliott of Melon, WI and Robert (Jacqueline) Elliott of Japan, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, special friend Retha Bancroft-Ovid. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Emil Volz, and two sisters, Frieda Volz & Martha Volz.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 4, 2002, 11:00 A.M. at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 4-7 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to United Church Library Fund or Ovid Public Library.

Kathryn H. Bartlett

Kathryn H. Bartlett,  DeWitt Loving mother and grandmother, age 83, died March 1, 2002. Born July 28, 1918, in Lansing, Mrs. Bartlett worked in housekeeping at Sparrow Hospital for 7 years, retiring in 1981. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul (Eddie); son, Edward; and brother, Robert Phillips.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Shirley Denison of Holt and Karen (Tom) Fulcher of Muir; 1 son, Donald Bartlett of Bath; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 5, at Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Monday from 6-8 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to Hazel Findlay Country Manor, 1101 S. Scott Rd., St. Johns, MI 48879 in memory of Mrs. Bartlett.

Loyal G. Weismiller

Loyal G. Weismiller, Laingsburg, Age 86, died March 3, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital. Born January 28, 1916 in Olive Twp. to Wesley C. and Ethel (Flynn) Weismiller. He attended Country school and Laingsburg High School, served with the US Army during WWII, farmed and worked for Oldsmobile for 27 years. August 22, 1987 he married Mary M. (Rasmussen) West. He was a member of Laingsburg United Methodist Church and the Laingsburg VFW. Loyal was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his first wife Thelma and half brother Carl Weismiller.

Surviving are wife Mary; son Jerry (Sandie) Weismiller-Laingsburg; step-son Gary (Martha) West-Laingsburg; step-daughter Leona (Kenneth) Koonter-Laingsburg; grandchildren, Mark Weismiller, Kelsey Weismiller, Bryn Weismiller; step-grandchildren, Karen (Marc) Sanders, Amy (Mark) Gugel, Ernie (Jenny) West, Mark West, Riley Gugel; sister, Velma Foster of GA and brother, Lynn (Loine) Weismiller-Holt.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 5, at 11:00 A.M. at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home (McDougall Chapel), Laingsburg, with Pastor Gerald Sever Jr. officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home.

Beatrice C. Boling

Beatrice C. Boling died March 2, 2002 at the age of 93. She was born in Lansing on February 8, 1909, the daughter of Henry and Bessie (Willits) Schwartz. Beatrice married Wayne Boling on October 4, 1930 and he preceded her in death on November 18, 1980.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Boling of Tampa Bay, Florida and Robert Boling of St. Johns, grandchildren, Brad Boling, Dan Boling, Rick Boling, Craig Boling, Linda Gallagher, Brenda Hoten, Robbie Boling, Becky Welsh and Diane Muncy, several great grandchildren and one brother, Raymond (Thelma) White of Lansing. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Sandra Bashore.
