Fred G. Nickels,  DeWitt, MI Age 66, died October 30, 2002. Born February 6, 1936 in Clinton County. Mr. Nickels was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from General Motors. He was a member of Eagles Lodge Aerie #1039, Lansing.

Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Jerry; 2 daughters, Nancy (Chris) Judd of DeWitt and Tracey (Mike) Mihailoff of Charlotte; 3 sons, William (Sophia) Huyser of Lansing, Bob Huyser of DeWitt and Jim Huyser of Holt; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Wilson (Diane) Nickels of Davison and Alan (Doris) Nickels of Evergreen, CO; 1 sister, Marian (Willie) Walker of Johannsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, at Noon, at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.

Marian Marie Howard

Age 70 of Ashley, Michigan passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, Michigan. She was a homemaker and a Bus Driver for Ashley Schools. She was also a Nurses Aid at Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital.

There will be no Services.

Marian was born July 9, 1932 in Elsie, Michigan the daughter of Elias & Edna (Forrster) Evans. She attended Fenmore Schools and resided most of her life in the Ashley & Morrice areas. In July of 1974, she married Dale E. Howard in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Survivors include her husband, Dale E. Howard of Ashley, daughter, Connie & Bruce Andersen of Ashley, Son, Charles & Jody Yelsik of Ashley, daughter, Mary & Harlan Bearden of Houghton Lake, daughter, Joyce & Jim Losen of Williamston, son, Joe & Deana Yelsik of Ashley, 3 stepchildren, Jodi & Bob Studt of Ashley, Paul & Kate Howard of Houston, TX, Sheri & Terry Beck of Ashley, 19 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 2 sister-in-laws & family, mother-in-law, Edna Howard, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and 5 brothers.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Cordelia Mae Bashore

bashore_cordelia.jpg (3839 bytes)Age 89 of Bradenton, Florida formerly of Elsie, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at Integrated Health Systems in Bradenton, Florida. Cordelia was a Telegraph Operator during WWII and a homemaker.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Elsie United Methodist Church in Elsie, Michigan. Rev. Kay Pratt will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie.

Cordelia was born May 13, 1913 in North Star, Michigan the daughter of Ira D. & Wilma (Rahn) Sperbeck. At the age of 16, she graduated from Chesaning High School with the Class of 1929. On February 11, 1934 she married Woodrow W. Bashore in Chesaning. He passed away on July 14, 2000. Cordelia was a 4-H knitting teacher who also enjoyed quilting, knitting and crocheting. She was also an avid reader and a great mother and grandmother. Cordelia was a member of the Elsie United Methodist Church, transferring her membership to the United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Florida. She resided most of her life in Elsie, moving to Florida in 1975.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra & Jan Doyen of Bear Lake, son, Ira & Janice Bashore of Bradenton, FL, six grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren & five great great grandchildren, one sister, Onahlee & George Stokes of Bradenton, FL, and one brother Varley & Lucille Sperbeck of Dearborn. She was predeceased by her parents and a grandson, Jack Bashore.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Program. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Dorothy E. Cain,  91, of Greenville, formerly of St. Johns, former Cain Buick (St. Johns) owner, died Tuesday October 29, 2002.

Edna M. (DeGurse) Austin

austin.jpg (3600 bytes)Edna M. (DeGurse) Austin,  Ovid, MI Age 90, passed away Monday, October 28, 2002 at the Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid, MI. Born May 18, 1912 in Ada, MI, daughter of George & Nellie (Lockwood) Sillaway. She attended and graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1929. She also attended Owosso Nursing College. She married Stanley DeGurse in August of 1933. Stanley was a Captain in the U.S. Army and was killed in 1943 during WWII. On August 13, 1949, she married George K. Austin in Lansing, MI. He passed away in 1977. Edna was a homemaker and a member of the United Church of Ovid. She was a life member of Ovid/St. Johns OES Chapter #79. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo. Edna loved to crochet, and she made well over 100 afghans.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Ann (Lyle) Clark of Grand Ledge, MI; 3 step-daughters, Dorothy (Pat) McCarthy of Owosso, Marge (Ken) Parmenter of Ovid, and Carol (Larry) Bashore of Ovid; 5 step-sons, Ron (Carole) Austin of Lansing, Bruce (Judi) Austin of Florida, David (Bunny) Austin of Virginia, Don (Kathleen) Austin of California, and Ken (Shirley) Austin of Laingsburg; 28 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Clara Gust of Cedar Springs, MI; 1 sister-in-law, Eula Wiegman of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, 1 daughter, Janice and son-in-law Frank Kirinovic, 2 grandsons, 1 sister and 4 brothers. Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard but always near. Still loved, still missed year after year.

Funeral services will be held at United Church of Ovid, Ovid, MI, Thursday, October 31, 2002, 11 AM, with Pastor Rob McPherson officiating. Burial, Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. Visitation, Wednesday from 2-8 PM with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Order of Eastern Star Service, Wednesday evening at 6 PM. Lottie H. Guthrie

Lottie H. Guthrie,  DeWitt, MI Age 80, died October 28, 2002. Born September 5, 1922, in Cleveland, OH, and had been a resident of Lansing and the area since 1940. She was formerly employed with Abrams Instrument Corporation and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1039, Lansing. For many years, Lottie enjoyed traveling, bowling, golf, cards, cooking and collecting antiques. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. (1978), sister, Mary Overfield, 3 brothers, John, Walt and Alex Von Doloski. Surviving are 1 son, John R. (Sandy) of Bath; 3 daughters, Patricia (Ron) Howe of Perrinton, Sharon (Jay) Andersen of Lansing and Colleen (Paul) Nevills of Vicksburg; 7 grandchildren, John Guthrie, James Howe, Kathleen Phillips, Rob (Andrea) Goins, Robin (Bob) Follick, Gary J. and Matthew J. Nevills; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Von Doloski of Mt. Pleasant; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2 PM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Tuesday from 6-8 PM.

Clayton Bernard Church

Clayton Bernard Church,  DeWitt, MI Age 71, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Clayton was born on November 13, 1930 in Lansing and spent most of his life in DeWitt where he lived with Evalle, his wife of 50 years. He enlisted in the Michigan National Guard and served in Headquarters, Headquarter Detachment, and HQ Stare Unit for 40 years. He retired from the Guards and the Michigan Department of Military Affairs USPFO in April 1987. Clayton was a member of Valley Farms Baptist Church. Throughout his life, Clayton enjoyed gardening, bowling and played slowpitch softball for many years.

He will be missed by his surviving family, wife, Evalle; sons, Steven (Jane) and Mike (Tammie); daughter, Karen; mother, Lula; brother, Jerry; sister, Judy Swanson; grandchildren, Emily (Chris) Bourne, Brittany, Steve, Amanda, Michelle and Brooke Church; and numerous nieces and nephews. Clayton was preceded in death by his father, Clayton C., son, Clayton A. and daughter, Sharon E. Church.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 31, at Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt. Interment will follow in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt, with Military Honors provided by the Grand Ledge Army National Guard. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Visiting Nurse Services and Hospice, Ingham Regional Medical Center, 401 W. Greenlawn, Lansing, MI 48910 in memory of Clayton.

Dorothy Margaret Carter, DeWitt, 88, died Sunday October 27, 2002. Visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Gorsline-Runciman East Chapel, East Lansing.

Leo J. Rademacher

Leo J. Rademacher,  Dewitt Loving husband and father, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the age of 79. Born November 5, 1922 in Lansing, the son of Herman and Josephine (Schafer) Rademacher. Leo was a graduate of St. Mary High School and was a veteran of WWII, serving his country with the U.S. Army. He married Orzella VanEpps in 1947, who preceded him in death in 1998 after 51 years of marriage. Leo worked most of his life with Tranter Corp. and retired from Regal 8 Motels. Leo will be most remembered for his love of card games, his sense of humor and the love of the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife and 2 brothers.

Surviving are his children, Sue (Jim) Stewart, Ron (Terry Mulvaney), David, Gary, Kay (Paul Bennett) Parkhouse, Beth Rademacher and Roger (Carmela) Rademacher; 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

The Funeral Liturgy will be conducted Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Palmer-Bush Delta Chapel with Rev. Fr. Bill Lugger of St. Casimir Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Wacousta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Leo J. Rademacher.

Glenna Dell  Cutler

cutler.jpg (2731 bytes)Age 66 of Lansing, formerly of Ovid, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the Hospice House of Lansing, Michigan. She was a retired Beautician who owned and operated Glenna's Sher'r in Ovid.

Private Services will be held.

Glenna was born on November 7, 1935 in Ovid, Michigan the daughter of Frank & Freda (Huffman) Burl. She married Elmer D. Cutler in Ovid on July 7, 1968. She was an avid reader, and she enjoyed spending her winters in Arizona. She resided most of her life in Ovid, moving to Lansing one year ago. Glenna truly enjoyed her family; she was the pillar of the family.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer D. Cutler of Lansing, two daughters, Cindy & Steve Laraoff of Lansing, Sherri Welch, of East Lansing, three grandchildren, Bill Jr., Bobbie Jo & Becky, four great grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, Kirsten & Cierra, one sister, two brothers, one sister & brother-in-law, Cheryl & Raymond York of St. Johns. Glenna was predeceased by her parents, one sister & one brother.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice House of Lansing. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Leota B. Blatt

Leota was born August 16, 1915 in Lum, MI the daughter of Earl and Ada (Marcy) Weese. She married John Blatt December 6, 1933 and lived in the Peck community until after John’s death (June 5, 1970). In 1971, Leota moved to St. Johns, MI.  Leota was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, and a life member of Radiant Chapter #79 O.E.S., St. Johns.  In years past, she belonged to the Peck Civic Club, the Extension Club, and supported various community and school organizations and activities.  Leota was preceded in death by an infant sister, her parents, and her husband.  

Surviving are her three children, Belva (Rex) Kennedy, Ashburn, GA, Duane (Nina) Blatt, Muir, MI, and Sharon (John) Williamson, Laingsburg, MI. Also surviving are her two sisters, Lois Johns and Delesa Odell, eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. 

The family will receive visitors at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, Michigan Monday 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 -8:00 PM and Tuesday  2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 -8:00 PM at Peck Chapel of the Carman Funeral Home, 5441 S. Sandusky Road, Peck,MI.  Funeral Services will be held at the Peck Chapel, Wednesday at 11:00 AM.  Burial will follow at Elk Township Cemetery, Peck, MI. Maxine N. Schaub

Maxine N. Schaub,  Lansing, MI Loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother passed away on Friday, October 25, 2002, at the age of 90. She was born on July 29, 1912, to William and Lillian Silvers of St. Johns, MI. Preceding her in death was her husband of 56 years, Gerald Schaub, in 1988 and a son, Alan W. Schaub, in 1970.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Ardis Schaub of Hollywood, CA, Mary Jane Miller and Joan Moody of Lansing, MI; 4 grandchildren, Brian (Kim) Rowe of Clarksville, MI, Brenda Robinson of Haslett, MI, Jeff (Tammy) Schaub of Lansing, MI and Michelle Miller of Chicago, IL; 4 great-grandchildren, Tim Cody, Tyler, and Morgan; and a special cousin who Maxine cared for and lived with for many, many years, Shirley M. Silvers. Maxine was a very loving, caring and compassionate person and will truly be missed by everyone who knew her, especially her loving family.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 30, at noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery, Okemos, MI. Ryan L. Darling

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, October 27, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Rick Alcaraz will officiate with burial at Fairfield Township Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Michigan. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.m.

Ryan was born November 9, 1985 in Owosso, Michigan the son of Ronald Darling & Christina (Sawyer) Darling. Ryan was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked to spend time with his friends. He also enjoyed doing stunts on his bike and playing video games.

Ryan is survived by his mother, Christina Darling of Elsie, his father, Ronald Darling of Chapin, one sister, Jessica Darling of Elsie, two brothers, David Darling and Jacob Darling both of Elsie, maternal grandparents, Arlieta Sawyer of Bath, Mike & Sue Sawyer of Missouri, paternal grandparents, Kenneth Darling of Toledo, OH, Elizabeth & Grant Stenson of Elsie and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his great grandparents.

Memorials may be made in Ryan's name to Teen Challenge. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Albert C. DeLaere

DeLaere-Albert.jpg (27965 bytes)Albert C. DeLaere died October 24, 2002 at the age of 91. He was born in Ottoville, OH on September 16, 1911, the son of John and Prudence (VanEno) DeLaere and lived in St. Johns most of his life. He was a farmer. Albert married Gladys Padgett on December 12, 1936 and she preceded him in death on August 31, 1991.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet (Ben) Florence of Traverse City and Gloria (Brian) Haas of Annapolis, MD, five grandchildren, Greg Terrell, Lisa Hales, Heather Florence, Michele Haas and Chris Haas and sister, Mary VanBuren of Traverse City. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry and Leo DeLaere.

Interment services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 28, 2002 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Lansing, with Pastor Ray Sundell officiating. The family will receive friends 2-5 P.M. Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
