Raymond D. Thornton

thorton.jpg (3922 bytes)Age 86 of Owosso, Michigan passed away Sunday, November 3, 2002 at Hospice House of Lansing, Lansing, Michigan. He was a retired dairy farmer, and he also drove milk truck.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan. Rev. Merlin Pratt and Rev. Rae L. Franke will officiate with burial at Duplain Township Cemetery, Duplain Township, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday 2-8 with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Raymond was born on October 8, 1916 in Duplain Township, Michigan, the son of Theodore C. & Della (Shinn) Thornton. He graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1934 and he also attended Michigan State University. On April 8, 1939 he married Eleanor Emmons at the Elsie United Methodist Parsonage; she passed away on January 21, 1983. On May 25, 1984 he married Audrey Grubaugh Frutchl in St. Johns, she passed away on May 10, 1999. Raymond was a member and past President of AARP #2332. He was a life member of the National Holstein Association, past President of Council on Aging in Shiawassee County and Duplain Township Cemetery Association. He was an active member of the community in the building of the Ovid-Elsie High School, and was a member of the Sportsman Club. Raymond was a world traveler and walked the Great Wall in China. He was a volunteer for DSS, and he prepared taxes for senior citizens. He was a faithful blood donor for the American Red Cross for many years. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area moving to Owosso in 1975.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Rae & Chuck Franke of Lansing, MI, Betty & Albert Morris of Hawks, MI, Margaret & Howard Heyboer of Fowler, MI, 1 son, Dale Thornton of Nevada, 5 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, 1 sister, Mary & Russ Libey of Arizona, 2 brothers, Elmer Thornton of Elsie, MI, Roy & Ila Thornton of Elsie, MI, and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a set of twin children, James Arthur & Martha Mae, 1 sister, and 4 brothers.

Memorials may be made to Rochester Colony Historical Society or Ovid-Elsie FFA Program. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Jose Maria Riojas

Riojas-Jose.jpg (8544 bytes)Jose Maria Riojas died November 3, 2002 at the age of 54. He was born in St. Johns on January 15, 1948, the son of Pedro and Brigida (Carrizales) Riojas. He was employed in commercial construction, a member of the First Church of God, Cristo Rey of Lansing, the Boy’s Club of St. Johns and Lansing and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Viet Nam. Jose married Doris Anne Gooding in St. Johns on May 14, 2001 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are his son, Jose Maria (Jamie) Riojas, daughter, Anna Maria (Victor) Riojas Soliz, all of St. Johns, step children, Doris White and Ryan White, both of Howell, four grandchildren, Mariana Soliz, Kianna White, Tyler Jonathan Riojas and Victor Soliz II, three brothers, Juan (Jeanne) Riojas of California, Isrrael (Carole) Riojas of Laingsburg and Pedro (Sandra) Riojas, Jr. of Cleveland, TN, three sisters, Maria (David) Swanson of Maple Rapids, Norma Gorman and Doralicia (Socorro Portillo) Cordova, all of St. Johns and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at the First Church of God, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County.

Jean Marie Schroeder

Jean Marie Schroeder, Wacousta, age 85 of Clinton County, passed away November 3, 2002 in Lansing, MI. She was a resident of Wacousta all of her married life of 58 years to David Schroeder. She was a 50 year, active life member of Wacousta Chapter #133 O.E.S.; a Special-Ed bus driver for Grand Ledge Public Schools for 15 years and she and her husband maintained an apple orchard at their farm for many years. She was predeceased by her husband in 1997; her parents, Wilbur and Leora (Rogers) Hennis; two sisters, Dorothy Dankenbring and Helen Hennis; and a brother, Richard Hennis.

She is survived by two loving sons, David (Linda) of Grand Ledge and Daniel (Jeannie) of Eagle; grandson, Bradley (Jennifer) Schroeder of El Cajon, CA; granddaughter, Suzanna (Dillon) Grimes of Racine, WI; great-granddaughter, Octavia Plum Grimes; sister, Lettie Penfield of Grand Ledge; sister-in-law, Nora Hennis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 6th, 11:00 a.m. at the Wacousta Community United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lyle Heaton officiating; O.E.S. services will be conducted by Wacousta Chapter #133 O.E.S. Interment will be held at the Wacousta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. For those desiring, contributions made to the Clinton County hospice will be greatly appreciated.

Alice R.  Koth

Koth died Saturday, November 2, 2002 at the age of 85.  Alice was born October 20, 1917 to Andrew and Sarah (Dobb) DeYoung in Muskegon, MI.  and was employed for many years as a bookkeeper with Ramberg and LaCore Construction Company in Muskegon.  Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred (1995), parents and five brothers. 

She is survived by two daughters, Sally (Don) Zenas of South Haven and Rosemary (Bob) Green of St. Johns, six grandchildren; Daniel (Cindy) Zenas of Alpharetta, GA, Thomas (Tamberly) Zenas of Williamston, Joseph (Jean) Zenas of South Pasadena, CA, Jameison Green of Fort Wayne, IN, Brian (Lori) Green of Cincinnati, OH and Suzanne (Michael) Brock of St. Johns; six great grandchildren; one brother, Harvey (Mary) DeYoung of Muskegon; two sisters-in-law, Marian DeYoung of Muskegon and Kay DeYoung of Grand Haven. 

A Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 9, 2002 at First Congregational Church, 100 Maple, St. Johns, MI with interment services 2 P.M. Sunday, November 10 at Restlawn Cemetery in Muskegon.  Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the First Congregational Church Stained Glass Window Fund. The family in being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Alma Catherine Armbrustmacher, 74, of Weidman, formerly of Westphalia, retired Federal Mogul employee, died Saturday November 2, 2002. Services 10:30 a.m. Monday November 2, 2002 at St. Joseph the Worker Church, Beal City. Arrangements by Clark Funeral Chapel, Mt. Pleasant.

Irene M. Ferguson

Age 85 of St. Johns, Michigan passed away Friday, November 1, 2002 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing. She worked in the nursing business.

A Graveside Service will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 A.m. at North Plains Cemetery in Ionia County, Michigan.

Irene was born January 22, 1918 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Foster & Viola Mae (Lake) Lake. She graduated from the Nurses Aid Program. Irene resided most of her life in the Lansing and Mid-Michigan areas.

Survivors include daughter, Carrie Marie Anthony, two grandchildren and one great grandchild, two sisters, Jeanette Bellingar & Nora Stafford, one brother, Lloyd & Elaine Lake, and one sister-in-law, Betty Lake. She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Betty & Pauline, four brothers, Austin, John B., Foster Jr., and Melvin.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Mary E. Schafer

Mary E. Schafer,  Fowler Mary E. Schafer died November 1, 2002 at the age of 81.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Jerome M. Schafer; one son, Steven (Ann) Schafer of Fowler; one daughter, Beth Schafer of Lansing; four grandchildren, Katherine (Jeffrey) James, Jennifer (fiance, Brian Thelen), Steven, and Joan Schafer, all of Fowler; two great-grandsons, Harrison and Hayden James; three sisters, Annabel (Louis) Schafer of Westphalia, Monica (Martin) Pung of Flint, and Therese (Elmer) Thelen of Lansing; three brothers, John (Mary) Klein of Fowler, Peter (Margaret) Klein or St. Johns, and Lawrence (Carolyn) Klein of Fowler; and one sister-in-law, Doris Klein of Fowler.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday and Monday at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with Rosaries being prayed at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 3:00 p.m. Monday and a Vigil Service 8:00 p.m. Monday.

Margaret "Peggy" Joan Hyler

hyler.jpg (3280 bytes)Age 58 of Roscommon, Michigan passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at her home. She was a Childcare Provider and a Customer Service Representative for Crystal Flash Gas Station.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 2:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Tom Wilson will officiate. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7-9 P.m. and Friday 1-9 P.M.

Peggy was born August 16, 1944 in St. Johns, Michigan the daughter of Carl D. & Ester Carlene (Fleck) Padgett. She attended St. Johns Schools and resided most of her life in St. Johns. On February 18, 1967 she married Bruce D. Hyler at the Congregational Church of St. Johns. Peggy loved cooking, gardening, and landscaping, and she also loved fishing.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce D. Hyler of Roscommon, daughter, Michelle (Ken) Chvojka of St. Johns, daughter, Kimberly (Kevin) Jones of Ionia, daughter, Coby (Brian) Holmes of Maple Rapids, 5 grandchildren, Brittney, Brandy, Briana Cody & Tyler, sister, Jeanne (Neil) Yeomans of Roscommon, and several special nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.

Memorials may be made to Sparrow Regional Cancer Center. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Ethelyn Mullen Hungerford

Ethelyn Mullen Hungerford died October 30, 2002 at the age of 94.   Born November 30, 1907 in Devils Lake, North Dakota, she was the daughter Thorvald and Nettie (Smith) Roed.  Lyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Johns Senior Citizens Center.  Her marriage to John Mullen October 2, 1943 ended with his death in October 13, 1981.  On May 2, 1987 she married Harry Hungerford and he preceded her in death in July 22, 1995. 

Surviving are one son Michael (Kate) Mullen of St. Johns, one daughter Jacqueline Durand of Milford, Michigan, three granddaughters, Sarah, Annie and Emily Mullen, two brothers Carus (Melva) Roed of Minnesota and Lowell (Carmen) Roed of Colorado.  She was preceded in death by three brothers, Everette, Loris and baby brother Carus Road, two sisters Muriel Wisby and Helen Wisby.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 2, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a Rosary 7 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy E. Cain

Dorothy E. Cain, 91, born in Paulding, Ohio, Sept. 26, 1911, died at home in Greenville Oct. 29, 2002. She was the daughter of Marvin and Ida Fay Crosby Sworthwood and lived in St. Johns until 1981 when she moved to Greenville.

She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church of Greenville and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Ladies Altar Society in St. Johns.

Dorothy married William Norman Cain Oct. 21, 1929 in Bryan, Ohio, and he preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1974. She and her husband owned the former Cain Buick of St. Johns.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Sandra Smith of Greenville; son, N. Bernard and DeNalda Cain of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Candy Lawrence, Melanie Dohm, Greg Cain, Kathy and Bruce Hahn, Mary Cain and Adam Cain, all of Phoenix, Kelly and Frances Smith of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Shelly and Paul Denton of Greenville and Shawn and Jody Tyrrell of Bradley, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jason Lawrence, Andy and Mandy Dohm, Ashley and Dustin Hahn, Joshua, Jason and Justin Denton and Tori and Tia Tyrrell. Dorothy also has one brother, Albert and Irene Sworthwood of Durand and a sister, Opal Rauschenberger of Middleville and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Smith; brothers, Lester, Wayne and Ralph Sworthwood and sisters, B. Jane Kellogg, Velma Jackson, Axeline Code and Mildred Wing.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 31 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Greenville with the Rev. Father Fred Brucker as celebrant. Burial was at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns.

Memorials may be made to Hospice or the St. Charles Church Food Pantry.
