J. Kurncz Helen J. Kurncz died November 12, 2002 at the age of 80. She was born in Pennsylvania on January 19, 1922, the daughter of Michael and Sophie Dudash. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 15, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Education Fund. Lettie Marion Johnson, of Lansing (formerly of St. Johns) passed away on November 11, 2002 at the age of 86. She was born on May 18, 1916 in Detroit, Michigan, the oldest daughter of Harry E. and Edith M. (Kane) Giddings. She graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit, Michigan and from the Detroit Business College. She worked for Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit. On August 18, 1945 she married Leonard W. Johnson of Royal Oak, Michigan. He preceded her in death on October 5, 1996 after 51 years of marriage. She came to St. Johns in 1952 with her family, she worked for the Grant Department Store in downtown Lansing, and also for Woolco Department Store in Lansing as a Department Manager. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her sister, Virginia Strandberg. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her three sons and their families, Jim and wife Diana of St. Johns, their children, Cheryle and husband Bryce Harrison, their children, Kevin and Katelyne of Elsie, Michael Johnson of Lansing, Amy and husband Dan Ward of DeWitt; Bob and wife Faith of DeWitt, their daughters, Robin Johnson of Miami, Florida and Annette Johnson Coelde of San Jose, California; David and wife Deborah of Eaton Rapids, their children, Elizabeth, Deborah, Marion, Andrew, Abigail, Priscilla, and Naomi. She also has one niece, Donna Robbins of Allen Park, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, with Pastor Glenn Ray, Jr. officiating of Maranatha Baptist Church in Lansing. The family will receive friends 2-3 P.M. Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Gerald F. Miller, Pewamo Aged 90, passed away November 9, 2002 at the Hospice House St. Lawrence Campus in Lansing. He was born September 24, 1912 the son of Harrison and Eva (Mullins) Miller in Fowler. He would go on to marry Norene Kunzi June 2, 1945 in Fort Ord, CA. Gerald was a World War II Veteran of the Army. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Norene Miller of Pewamo; children, Daryl and Ann Miller of Portland, Ellen Jean and Jim Simon of Pewamo, Duane and Barbara Miller of Portland; sisters, Beatrice Frechen of St. Johns, Dorothy Fritch of Lansing, Shirley and Dennis Bertram of Indiana; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 3 sisters. Funeral Services for Mr. Miller will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at the Lyons-Muir Church with Rev. Scott Otis officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery in Muir. Pallbearers will be Tonya Simon, Scott Miller, Chad Miller, Todd Simon, Jason Miller, and Lester (Bill) Smalley. The family will receive friends and relatives for a visitation on Monday 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir. Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to Hospice House St. Lawrence Campus Opal Mildred Flegler, a devoted school teacher of 30 years and loving wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with her Lord and maker on Thursday, November 7, 2002. She was born Opal Mildred Parks on January 25, 1908 in Dallas Township in rural Clinton County . Early in life she knew she wanted to be a school teacher. She taught in several one room schools in Clinton County early in her career and often traveled to school via a horse drawn buggy. She worked part-time at REO, the Porter Hotel, and Auto Owners Insurance during the depression when many school districts could no longer pay their teachers. In 1941 she started raising her family. After the youngest entered school, she went back to Michigan State University to complete her degree and upgrade her teaching certificate and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She retired from the Lansing School District (Mt. Hope School) in 1969. She was a creative teacher, who was greatly admired by her students. She was an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Opal loved genealogy and traced her ancestry back to 1580. Her first ancestors arrived in America in 1630. She was very proud that her ancestors were among the first settlers of Clinton County. Opal had a special place in her heart for the handicapped and was very compassionate towards animals. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. She is survived by daughter, Janis McNeil (Clay) of Portland; son, Dr. Stanley Flegler (Carol) of Okemos; granddaughters, Jessica and Krista McNeil of Portland, Anna and Mary Flegler of Okemos; grandson, Thomas Flegler of Okemos; 3 sisters-in-law; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon and husband, Lewis. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday, 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Bekofske officiating. Interment will follow at Wacousta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Palmer-Bush Lansing Chapel and Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church in memory of Opal M. Flegler. Ned D. Upton, St. Johns, MI Age 55, died Friday, November 8, 2002 at his home. Born in St. Johns, MI on March 2, 1947 to Verne and Lois (Tanner) Upton. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1965 and received an Associates Degree from Lansing Community College. He married Lorraine Lee Hicks on November 30, 1968 in St. Johns, MI. He worked for Tetra Tech Civil Engineering in Lansing, MI. He was a member of Lowe United Methodist Church. He was on the Sowle Cemetery Board, active with the St. Johns Soccer Club and sang in the church choir and was a former 4-H member. He also rode in the DALMAC Bicycle Trip for 17 years on Labor Day. Survivors include, wife, Lorraine Upton; daughter, Rhonda Upton; son, Matthew Upton; and brother Elmer (Jan) Upton, all of St. Johns. He was predeceased by his parents and 1 sister, Jeannine Siderius. Memorial services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, 2057 N. Lansing Street, St. Johns Chapel on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 3:00 P.M., with Pastor Joseph L. Spackman and Pastor James Dibbit officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, November 10, 2002 from 2-8 PM with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lowe United Methodist Church Handicap Addition Fund. Anna Rose Koenigsknecht, Fowler, MI Age 75, died November 7, 2002. Born in Fowler on December 14, 1926 the daughter of Otto and Mary(Hufnagel) Simon. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, enjoyed playing cards, was an avid Fowler Eagle fan, a member of Christian Mothers, Fowler Athletic Boosters and volunteered with Meals On Wheels. Annie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She was married April 15, 1944 to Alfred Koenigsknecht, her husband of 58 years and he survives her. Also surviving are five sons, Jim (Marsha), Larry (Rachelle), Mike (Diane), Dale (Therese) all of Fowler, Tom (fiance Jacque Mallory) of Perrinton, two daughters, Carol (Doug) Eldridge of St. Johns, and Diane (Brad) Hulliberger of Dimondale, twenty grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, two brothers, Donald (Shirley) Simon of Mt. Clemens, Frank (Barbara) Simon of Lansing, three sisters, Rita (Carl) Wieber of Fowler, Teresa Donovan of Kenner, LA., Wilma Thelen of St. Johns and sister in law, Joan Thelen of Dewitt. Annie was preceded in death by her son, Ken and grandson, Kenneth James, brothers, Anthony, Paul and Roman Simon. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, November 11, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday on Sunday, 2 - 4 P.M. and 7 - 9 P.M. at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, with rosaries being prayed at 3 P.M. and 8 P.M. both days. |
