Laurence A. (Bud, Mort) Mueller

Laurence A. (Bud, Mort) Mueller, Lansing, MI Laurence, age 79, passed away December 10, 2002 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 10, 1923 in St. Johns, MI, Laurence was the oldest son of Herman and Mary Mueller. Laurence served in the US Navy during WWII II as an Aviation Machinist. He retired from MSU Physical Plant and also retired from Westdale Realty when he became ill in 2000. He was a long standing member of Holy Cross Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Big supporter of Old Newsboys. Laurence was married to Arlene Mueller (Kramer) for 50 years. She precedes him in death in June of 2001.

Laurence is survived by 3 children, Lawrence (Susan) Mueller of Mason, Peggy (Jim) Green of Grand Ledge and Robert (Lisa) Mueller of Grand Ledge. He is also survived by his 4 beloved grandchildren, Becky, Lindsay, Nicole and Robert; 9 brothers and sisters, Geraldine Moore of St. Johns, Jim (Betty) Mueller of Apache Junction, AZ, Charley Mueller of Prudenville, Bob Mueller of Merritt, Agnes (Marvin) Fedewa of Westphalia, Virginia Compton of Corunna, Gerald (Marilyn) Mueller of Indiana, Mary Ann Mueller of Nevada and Blanche (Bruce) Woodbury of Elsie. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Pius Poff as celebrant. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will be Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Palmer Bush Lansing Chapel, 520 E. Mt. Hope where a Vigil will be prayed Thursday at 7 PM. Memorials contributions may be made to Old Newsboys or Meals on Wheels.

Hilda M. Bengel

Hilda BengelHilda M. Bengel died Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at the age of 94. She was born in Dallas Township, Michigan on March 11, 1908, the daughter of John and Anna (Schneider) Thelen. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers Association, and Daughters of Isabella. Hilda married Joseph Bengel on May 8, 1929 and he preceded her in death on December 4, 1973. 

Surviving are her children, Jeannette (Arnold) Weber-Pohl, Adeline (Vernon) Schneider, Robert (Gladys) Bengel, Rose (Jerome) Smith, Richard (Alice) Bengel, all of Westphalia, and Agnes (Charles) George of Pewamo, 37 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren.  Hilda also has two sisters, Agnes Arens of Westphalia and Mary Ann (Albert) Smith of Pewamo, son-in-law, Edgar (Mary Ann) Thelen of Fowler, brother-in-law, Robert H. (Lenora) Bengal of Westphalia and sisters-in-law, Sr. Marina Bengel and Sr. Agnette Bengel, both of Chicago. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Thelen, grandson, Neil Thelen, great grandson, Noah Thelen, six sisters, Elizabeth Thelen, Sr. Catherine Thelen, Rose Anne Bengel, Irene Pohl, Martha Schafer and Pauline Martin, two brothers, Louis Thelen & Herman Thelen, and son-in-law, Donald Weber. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 13, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia, burial at St. Mary's Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Cecilio Reyna officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Thursday at St. Mary's Chapel with a rosary being prayed at 8 P.M. Wednesday and 3 and 8 P.M. Cassie C. Shafer

Cassie C. Shafer, Lansing, MI Age 96, died December 10, 2002. Born February 21, 1906 in Clinton County, MI. Mrs. Schafer was a graduate of St. Johns High School and Central Michigan University. She taught 16 years in rural schools in Clinton County and 15 years in the Lansing Public Schools, retiring in 1971. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers and Lansing Retired School Personnel and Calvary United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, WR Stevens and Daniel Shafer, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Surviving are 2 sons, W. Collier Stevens of Lansing and Douglas (Julaine) Stevens of TN; 7 grandchildren, Curtis (Anne Marie), Kim (Pam), Laurie, Mark, Lee (Lydia), Kevin and Melody (John); 10 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 13, 10 AM at Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing, with the Rev. Jane Duffey, Pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in South Bingham Cemetery, St. Johns. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to Calvary United Methodist Church, 1919 S. Kenneth L. Schmitt

Kenneth SchmittKenneth L. Schmitt, Lansing, MI Formerly of Fowler Kenneth L. Schmitt died December 10, 2002 after a short, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in St. Johns on October 14, 1953, the son of Herman and Romayne (Thelen) Schmitt. Kenneth was an accountant, scouted for Fowler Football for over 20 years, enjoyed spending time at the family cottage and was an avid high school sports fan.

Surviving are his mother, Romayne Schmitt, brothers and sisters, Lynn (Tom) O'Rourke, David (Amy) Schmitt, Kat Schmitt, Dan (Patty) Schmitt, Darce (Darin) Walter and Kevin (Joyce) Schmitt, nieces and nephews, Ryan (Vicki), Dan, Steve and Patrick O'Rourke; Scott and Andy Schmitt; Josh, Jacob and Nicholas Schmitt; Hunter and Alexa Walter; Alexis, Brianna and Taylor Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman, and nephew, Clement Daniel O'Rourke. Kenneth's wishes were to donate his body to the Michigan State University Medical School.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Friday, December 13, 2002 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, with the Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 7- 9 PM Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, with a rosary prayed 8 PM Wednesday and 3 PM Thursday and a vigil service 8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Edith W. Taylor

Edith W. Taylor died December 9, 2002 at the age of 82. She was born in Ovid Township on June 30, 1920, the daughter of Melbourne and Harriet “Hattie” (Lane) Morehouse. She married Clair Taylor on June 1, 1938 in Ovid and he preceded her in death on January 1, 1988. 

Surviving are her children, Edward (Betty) Taylor of Byron, Robert Taylor of St. Johns, Vivian (Gary) Hrncharik of Ovid and James (Ina) Taylor of Eureka, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, three brothers, George Morehouse of St. Johns, Bill Morehouse of Owosso and Darrell (Edith) Morehouse of Texas, two sisters, Dorris Anderson of Ovid and Frances (Dale) Martin of Texas, sister-in-law, Dorothy Morehouse of Ft. Wayne, IN and special aunt, Georgeanna Underhill of Ovid. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by grandson, Gary Taylor, two great grandchildren and brother, Basil Morehouse. 

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 12, 2002 at Duplain Church of Christ with Dan Camron officiating. The family will receive friends 12 noon - 8 P.M. Wednesday at 9918 McBride Rd., Ovid. Memorials may be made to V.F.W. Post in Ovid.

Freda Belle Gill

gill.jpg (8781 bytes)Freda Belle Gill, 89, of Elsie passed away Dec. 6, 2002 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid. She was born Jan. 31, 1913 in Chapin Township, the daughter of Van and Maude (Simpson) Bates.

She was a farmer's wife and a caretaker to her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Chapin United Methodist Church and a member of the Chapin United Methodist Women's Group. She lived most of her life in Chapin Township.

She married the late Charles Gill Oct. 28, 1938.

Survivors include daughter, Margaret (Velmar) Green of Elsie; Margery (Brad) Henderson of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Margery Webster, Craig Green, Cherie Henderson and Brent Henderson; five great-grandchildren; sister, Orpha Gutzmer of Chesaning; brother, Roy ÒTommyÓ Bates of Chapin; several beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert 'Bill' Bates and infant children, Daniel and Vaneta.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, with the Rev. David Miles officiating. Burial was at Ford Cemetery in Gratiot County. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.

Kathryn C.   Lipps

Kathryn C.   Lipps, DeWitt, MI Age 93, died December 6, 2002. Born June 24, 1909 in Langston, MI. Mrs. Lipps was a member of the Wacousta Blue Star Mothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Russell (1967), son, Stephen W. (2001), daughter-in-law, Joyce (1996), son-in-law, Arnold Ladd (1993), and 2 step-sons, Vern and Cleo.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Joyce I. Ladd of Grand Ledge; 2 sons, Robert "Bob: M. (Norma) of DeWitt and Roland R. (Pat) of Lansing; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 9, at Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt, with the Rev. Wesley B. Emerson of Mason, officiating. Interment will follow in Wacousta Cemetery, Wacousta, MI. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Sunday from 2-4 and 5-7 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, 2350 S. Huron, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 in memory of Kathryn.

Albertine M. (Schleber) Murray

Albertine M. (Schleber) Murray  died December 4, 2002 at the age of 86. Born June 19, 1916, in Rochester, NY the daughter of C. William and Emma M. (Kodisch) Schleber.  She moved to Detroit, Michigan and later moved to Ovid, Michigan in 1968.  She was a lifelong  member of Salem United Church of Christ in Rochester, NY and over 50 year member and  Past Matron of OES-Germania Chapter #72 in Rochester, NY.  Mrs. Murray was a retired secretary for a law office.  Her marriage of 25 years to A. Gordon Murray on November 9, 1963, ended with his death June 26, 1989.  

She is survived by two stepsons, four step grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  

Mrs. Murray will be buried at Acacia Park Cemetery in Birmingham, Michigan. Interment services will be held 12 Noon Saturday, December 7, 2002. Visitation will be held 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Thursday at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, Michigan. Memorials may be made to Ovid Area Ambulance Service.

Margaret Isabell Griffin

Margaret Isabell Griffin, 77, of Cadillac and formerly of St. Johns, died Dec. 3, 2002 at Lakeview Lutheran Manor, Cadillac. She was born April 30, 1925 in St. Johns, the daughter of R.J. and Pearl (O'Dell) Teachout.

She was born and raised in St. Johns and was a Stanley dealer for over 30 years. She loved to play bingo and was a member of the Nazarene Church in St. Johns.

She is survived by a son, Robert (Kathy) Griffin, Sr. of Cadillac; daughters, Carolyn Griffin of Vestaburg and Patricia Robinson of Albany, GA; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Edward (Vaila) Teachout of Mesick and Wayne (Gail) Teachout of Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Forrest Robinson; sister, Pauline Mudget; granddaughter, Vickie Mills and great-great-grandson, Caleb Shively.

Private family services will take place at a later date in St. Johns.

Arrangements were made by the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac.

Daniel L. Bishop

Funeral services were held Dec. 2 at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Clearfield, Penn., for Daniel L. Bishop, 49 of Carbon Mine Road, Clearfield, who died Nov. 28, 2002 at his home.

Dr. Duane White officiated; interment was at Fruit Hill Cemetery. Military honors were accorded at the cemetery by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.

Mr. Bishop was born May 17, 1953, in Grand Rapids, the son of Margaret (Whitford) Bishop of Maple Rapids and the late Loyal Bishop. He was a graduate of the Fulton High School.

He was formerly employed by Lansberry Trucking Co. and Dixon Machine. He attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Clearfield. He was a retired United States Army veteran with 22 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Jean (Bloom) Bishop; three children, Jennifer (William) Kitko of Woodland, Shelly (Michael) Toto of Clearfield, and Holly (Jason) Shof of Sanborn; two grandchildren, Britney and Breanna Kitko; two brothers, Terry Bishop and Randall Bishop, both of Maple Rapids, and a sister, Rosemary Teems of Maple Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Richard Bishop; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
