Jay K. Caldwell

Caldwell-Jay.jpg (10819 bytes)Jay K. Caldwell passed away February 28, 2003 at the age of 59. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 26, 1943. The son of Kenneth and Mary Caldwell (Brickel) and lived in St. Johns, Michigan for the last 22 years. He was a graduate of Orange High School in 1962, was a Vietnam Veteran, a Sales Consultant for Drummond American Corporation for 12 years. He collected antique clocks, keys, railroad lanterns, stamps and antique glass bottles.  He was a member of The American Legion Post 153 Edwin King Styles for 15 years.  Previous positions held were Commander, Treasurer, Executive Board and Finance Officer. He was also a member of the St. Johns Honor Guard and Head of the Clinton-Gratiot Voiture #868 of the 40/ET 8.

Surviving are his children Clark Caldwell of Columbus, Ohio, Stacy Caldwell of Westphalia, Michigan, Keith Caldwell of St. Johns, Michigan and Christina Caldwell of St. Johns, Michigan; four grandchildren, Nathan, Austin, Maria Sue and Blake; one brother, Dale Caldwell of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Caldwell and his Father Kenneth Caldwell. 

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 7, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, Michigan with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating. The family will receive friends 12 Noon – 2 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Sister Edna Stringham, SSJ

Sister Edna Stringham, SSJ  Fontbonne Manor Nazareth, MI Died March 1, 2003. Sister was born November 13, 1920 in Grand Rapids, MI, the daughter of Charles E. and Violet J. (Swartz) Stringham and was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph.  At one time she taught at St. Joseph School, St. Johns.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Stringham of Webberville, MI; and a sister, Elouise Meyer of Fowlerville, MI; several nieces and nephews; and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Friends will be received at St. Joseph Chapel Wednesday after 1:30 PM. A Wake Service will be held Wednesday 7:15 PM in the St. Joseph Chapel, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 10:30 AM, with final viewing at 10:15 AM. Stella J.  Taylor

Stella J.  Taylor, Formerly of Lansing and St. Petersburg, FL Born January 31, 1917 in Fowler, MI, the daughter of Adam and Anna (Schnieder) Bauer, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 in Troy at age 86. Stella married her husband Thomas H., April 14, 1942 just prior to his entering the US Army during WW II. He preceded her in death in 1992. She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Rene in 1967. They lived in Lansing for 35 years where she was active in Holy Cross Altar Society. After Tom's retirement they spent most of their time in St. Petersburg, FL. She returned to Michigan in the spring of 2002 and lived near her family in Troy, MI.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Ellen Baird Taylor) of Sterling Heights; 3 grandchildren Timothy Taylor, Peter Taylor and Laura Taylor Dickerson; 2 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Evelyn Gebert and Bernita Richards.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00am at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Timothy Byrnes as celebrant. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-9pm at the Palmer Bush Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw where the Vigil will be prayed at 7:00pm.

Hazel L. Heibeck

Heibeck died March 1, 2003.  Born in St. Johns on April 30, 1922, she was the daughter of Lee and Zilpha (Munson) Rademacher and lived in St. Johns before moving to Florida.  She was affiliated with the United Methodist Church and a retired Executive Secretary for the Michigan Livestock Exchange.  Hazel married Robert Heibeck on March 3, 1940 and he survives her.  

Also surviving are one son, Richard (Lynn) Heibeck of Port Richey, Florida, one daughter, Marilyn (Ron) Coons of Good Hope, Illinois, five grandchildren, Richard Heibeck, Jr. of Spring Hill, FL, Judy (George) Gerganus of Spring Hill, FL, Tom (Melissa) Groesbeck, Jr. & Deborah Schulz both of New Port Richey, FL & Susan (Todd) Miller of Fowler, six great grandchildren, Jeffery, Kristi, Melissa, Scott, Jeremy & Jordan, and sister-in-law, Beth Rademacher of Alpena.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Rademacher.  

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Kay Pratt officiating.  The family will receive friends 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.  

Wayne A. Smith

Wayne A. Smith died March 3, 2003 at the age of 81. He was born in Lansing on October 25, 1921, the son of Horace and Bessie (Benton) Smith. He was a sales representative for Bolen’s and Ford Motor Company, a farmer, a member of First United Methodist Church and Clinton County Senior Center where he enjoyed playing euchre and bingo, and was a life member of the Masonic Lodge. Wayne married Beatrice Ely in DeWitt on January 25, 1942 and she preceded him in death in 1984. 

Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Larry) Stiffler of St. Johns, son, Mark (Michelle) Smith of California, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and devoted friend and companion, Iva Kees. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his daughter Marjorie Simmon. 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at South Bingham Cemetery with the Rev. Carol Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Leo A. Thelen

Thelen-Leo2.jpg (8089 bytes)Leo A. Thelen died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the age of 78.   He was born on July 4, 1924 in Bengal Township, Michigan, the son of Leo J. and Anna I. (Miller) Thelen and lived in Fowler before moving to St. Johns. He retired in 1985 from Federal Mogul as a die repairman.  Leo was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.  He married Marie Dailey on June 4, 1946 in Hubbardston and she preceded him in death July 22, 2001. 

Leo is survived by 7 children, Mary Lee (John) Kowatch of Pewamo, Linda (Ron) McCarty, Terry (Theresa) Thelen, David Thelen, all of St. Johns, Colleen (Dan) Fedewa of Westphalia, Brian (Debbie) Thelen of Fowler and Mike (Andrea) Thelen of Dewitt, 23 grandchildren, Tim (fiance Andrea Thelen) Kowatch, Lori (Terry) Pung, Brian (Jill) Kowatch, Dan (Rachel) Kowatch, Chris (Nicole) Kowatch, Brent (Tonya) McCarty, Sean McCarty, Ryan McCarty, Jessica Thelen, Jami Thelen, Brie Thelen, Chris Halliday, Matthew (Carrie) Fedewa, Courtney Fedewa, Troy Fedewa, Abby Fedewa, Travis Fedewa, Emily Thelen, Michael Thelen, Katie Thelen, Sarah Rademacher, Jacob Rademacher, and Amanda Rademacher, 9 great grandchildren, one sister, Frances (Louie) Langbeen of Fraser, several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife Marie, Leo was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Thelen, infant daughter, Annette Thelen, grandchildren, Michelle Kowatch and Michael Fedewa, parents, Leo and Anna Thelen, and brother, Raymond Thelen.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating.  Visitation will be at the Osgood Funeral Home 2:00 - 8:00 on Sunday and 9:00 - 8:00 on Monday with the family present 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 both days with a rosary being prayed 7:00 P.M. Monday and a vigil service prayed at 7:30 P.M. Monday.

Bryce P. Call

Bryce P. Call died February 25, 2003 at the age of 39 after a lengthy illness. He was a 1982 graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School, graduate of I.T.T. Technical Institute in Ft. Wayne, IN with a degree in engineering, enjoyed restoring his father’s ’69 Cougar, working with his hands, loved computers and cooking. He was active as a youth in the United Church of Ovid and he loved his little boy dearly. 

Surviving are his son, Coda of Clarksville, TN, mother, Dorthy Call of Ovid, sister, Brenda Strobel of Lansing, nieces, Deanna, Marissa and McKensey, fiancé, Zondra and little Brittany, sister-in-law, Kim Call and best friend, Patrick (Melanie) Malone. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul W. Call, Jr., brother, Dr. Bruce K. Call, his faithful dog, Tasha and his cat, Gilbert.  

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 3, 2003 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Shirley E. Doty

Shirley E. Doty died February 27, 2003 at the age of 93. She was born in Ovid, July 22, 1909 the daughter of George and Luella (Walker) Barber.   Shirley was a member of the United Church of Ovid and was recognized as the longest membership in the church.  She was also a member of the Laugh-A-Lot Club of Ovid and enjoyed playing bridge.  Shirley married Ferris A. Doty on October 19, 1928 and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1983.  

She is survived by one daughter, Janet (Edwin) Pierson of Howell, grandchildren, Linda (Michael) Sagorski of Rockford, Susan (Emilio) DiTomasso of Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, Karen (Bruce Henniss) Pierson of Houston, Texas, great grandchildren, Lauren Sagorski, Jeffrey, Eric and James DiTomasso.  In addition to her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and great grandson, David Sagorski.  

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 3, 2003 at Osgood Funeral Home, Houghton Chapel in Ovid, with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.   Memorials may be made to the United Church of Ovid or the Alzheimers Association.
