Mildred Brown Mildred Brown died with Grace, just the way she lived, on June 3, 2003 at the age of 91. She was born in Maxwell, Pennsylvania, on September 14, 1911, the daughter of John and Mary Dunay. She was a good teacher all her life, a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a reader for St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of Clinton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Morning Musicale, Womans Club, Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum and was instrumental in starting the Win-Mil Farms subdivision in St. Johns. Mildred married Winchell Brown in Lansing on August 15, 1940, and he preceded her in death on October 21, 1988. Surviving are her daughter, Sharon (Bruce) Henderson of Holt, two grandsons, Mark D. Conn of DeWitt and Todd M. (Nicole) Conn of Commerce Township, four great grandchildren, Averie Conn, Evan Conn, Kevin Conn and Grace Conn, brother, August (Frances) Dunay of Ovid, nieces, Margaret (Nick) Koenigsknecht of St. Johns, Angie (Ken) Haney of Lansing and Liz (Doug) Brown of Ovid as well as other special nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 7, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a vigil service 7 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or Briggs Public Library in St. Johns. Gerald G. Ferguson, Elsie, MI Passed away on Monday evening, June 2, 2003 at the Ovid Healthcare Center. Age 90, he was born on June 23, 1912 in Elsie, the son of Andrew J. and Mary (McClatchey) Ferguson. He married Dora Marguerite Woodruff on May 12, 1933. She predeceased him on May 12, 1976. He then married Evelyn Wooley on February 10, 1987 and she survives him. He retired from the Lansing GM Forge Plant in 1972. He very much enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; 3 children, Gerald and June Ferguson of Elk Rapids, Ronald and Judy Ferguson of Haslett, Anita and Pat Lyden of Martin, MI; son-in-law, Steve George; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by 2 infant daughters, his parents, a brother and sister and his first wife, Dora Marguerite. In following his wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements were handled by Walker-Martin Funeral Home, Chesaning, MI (989) 845-3420. Norbert L. Simon, age 89, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2003. He was born on February 28, 1914 in Westphalia, MI the son of Joseph P. and Elizabeth (Bauer) Simon. Mr. Simon was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo, the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council #8071, and the Westphalia St. Joseph Society. He farmed his entire life and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sharon; brothers, Herman, Linus, Raymond Simon; mother and father-in-law, John and Theresia Thelen. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Bertha E. (Thelen); 11 children, Marie (Ken) Smith, Jane (Ron) Goodman, Joan (Rick) Capel, Joyce (Dan) Weber, Arlene (Roy) Piggott, Donna (Fred) Doll, Carol (Kurt) Thelen, Wanda (Jim) Martin, Ron (Jackie) Simon, Ken (Judi) Simon, and Dale (Carol) Simon; 44 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Estelle M. Simon; several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo with Rite of Committal following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. The rosaries will be prayed at 4 and 8 p.m. Sunday, 3 p.m. Monday and there will be a Scripture Wake Service held at 8 p.m. Monday. Heathman, Mason, MI Born January 17, 1912 in Clinton County, the daughter of David and Ethel Houseman; died June 2, 2003 at the age of 91. Mrs. Heathman retired from the A & P in 1974 and was a member and Past Matron of Honor in the Eastern Star, Mason Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Heathman, 3 children, James A. Heathman, Delores VanHorn, and Jack L. Heathman, 4 brothers, 4 sisters and her parents. Surviving are her daughter, Judith (Melvin) Franke of Mason; son, Thomas (Betty) Heathman of Dansville; daughter-in-law, Judy Heathman of Minnesota; son-in-law, Charles VanHorn of Mason; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Atwood of Lansing. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 4, Noon, at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Ball-Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson, Mason, with the Rev. Timothy T. Tuthill, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Mason, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Tuesday from 6-9 PM. She was born January 3, 1922 in Essex Township, Michigan the daughter of Henry W. and Polly L. (Jenne) Taege. Anna lived in Ithaca for 12 years, then moved to the family Centennial home near Maple Rapids. She is survived by her children, Linda Houlden of Charlevoix, Bill Redman and John (Debbie) Redman of Boyne City, Tom Redman of Ada, Robert (Lisa) Gault of Owosso and David (Janet) Gault of Ithaca, 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and son-in-law, Dan Sattler of Maple Rapid. home. Janie L. Garcia died Friday, May 30, 2003 at the age of 73. She was born March 4, 1930 in Perrinton, Michigan the daughter of Benjamin and Maria (Silva) Lopez and lived in Clinton and Gratiot Counties all of her life. Janie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the former Guadalupe Guild. She married John Garcia August 28, 1948. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Garcia, one son, John (Pamela) Garcia, one daughter, Janie (Carl) Carlson, all of St. Johns, 5 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, two sisters, Margaret Feightner of Lansing and Anne (Jim) McAfee of Montrose and six brothers, Joseph Lopez, August (Delores) Lopez, Jim (Donna) Lopez, Max (Kathy) Lopez, Ernest (Margaret) Lopez and Roberto Lopez, all of Lansing. Hattis, Westphalia, MI Age 74, died on May 31, 2003. He was born on September 19, 1928, in Pewamo, MI the son of Harry E. and Margaret (Williams) Hattis. Reece was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the St. Joseph Society. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and he retired in 1987 from General Motors after 40 years of service. Reece married Dorothy Hanses on October 25, 1952 and she survives him. He is also survived by his 2 children, Tom (Eileen) Hattis and Susie (Larry) Hengesbach both of Westphalia and 6 grandchildren, Shannon, Ryan, Eric, Brittni Hengesbach and Michael and Jeffrey Hattis; brother, Bud (Deb) Hattis of Portland; brother-in-law, David (Kate) Hanses; sisters-in-law, Revella (Simon) Smith, Kathleen (Robert) Barker, Liz (Robert) Spitzley; many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Bernard A. "Barney" Tolles died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at the age of 86. He was born October 19, 1916 the son of Ethan and Ivah (Dutton) Tolles. Barney was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Tolles and one sister, Mildred Jones. Barney is survived by his sister-in-law, Oral Tolles of Ovid, two nieces, Karen (Duane) Bird of Williamston and Sally Pelkie of Florida, several great nieces and nephews and two cousins, Harold Tolles of St. Johns and Marie Skilling of Minnesota. There will be no funeral services. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes. Peter Edward Asher, Bath, MI Age 44, passed away Friday, May 30, 2003 at his home. Born June 19, 1958 in Lansing, MI to Glen Richard and Verna (Havens) Asher. He graduated from Bath High School, Class of 1977. He worked for Allied Disposal and was a member of Bath Sons of The American Legion. Survivors include 3 children, Jedidiah Asher of Bath, Samantha Asher of Marion, MI and Mirinda Smith of Canada; mother, Verna; brother, Michael (Christine) Asher of Perry; sisters, Linda (Roger) Friend of Sanford and Katie (Tracy) Anderson of Okemos; and dog, Clyde. She was born in Ovid on August 13, 1930, the daughter of Arthur and Beatrice (Ripple) Willard. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella and past member of Christian Mothers. Glenna Jeanne married William P. Schrauben in Laingsburg on July 12, 1952 and he survives her. Also surviving are her children, William (Linda) Schrauben, Jr., Debra (Walter) Franks, Gary (Margaret) Schrauben, Dean (Sue) Schrauben and Don (Becky) Schrauben, seventeen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, sisters, Barbara Morence and Mary Ellen Last, brothers, W. Russell (Rosemary) Willard and Robert (Joanne) Willard and sister-in-law, Diane Willard. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Roma Willard and brothers, Douglas, John and William Willard. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Heibeck died Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the age of 87. She was born July 14, 1915 in Bingham Township, Michigan the daughter of Leon and Edith (Kolb) Ormes and lived in Clinton County all of her life. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Vesper Division, Congregators, and active as a 4-H Leader for 49 years. In addition to being a former bookkeeper for Huggetts Hardware & Phillips Implement, she also served as treasurer for Bingham Township and the South Bingham Cemetery Association. She enjoyed bowling and playing bridge in her spare time. Alice married Lawrence Heibeck January 29, 1936 and he survives her. Also surviving are two daughters, Martha (Robert) Moore of Alma & Patricia (Dennis) Koenigsknecht of St. Johns, one son, James (Donna) Heibeck of Fort Wayne, IN, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
